Book excerpt: Trails of Yesterday, first published in 1921, is ranked with the best firsthand accounts of ranching on the northern Great Plains in the 1870s and 1880s. This classic of cow-country literature is rich in authentic frontier history. Born in England in 1842, John Bratt came to America when he was twenty-two, and in 1866 he joined a wagon train traveling from Nebraska City to Fort Phil Kearny. Bratt gives a vivid view of the country along the Great Platte River Road, reporting on the condition of the trail, meetings with Indians such as Dull Knife, and encounters with buffalo herds. There are splendid descriptions of the few forts then protecting the long trail—Forts Kearny, McPherson, Mitchell, and Sedgwick—and of the road ranches of John Burke and the notorious Jack Morrow, among others. Bratt was a cattle rancher for more than two decades and was instrumental in the settlement of North Platte, Nebraska.

In a small town in the central Colorado Rockies, the stunning natural landscape abetted one young mans struggle with boredom and lifes questions. Here is an incomplete record of that boys early years.

Multidimensional character. Pathos. Conflict. I have read more than 50 books in this venue. Rys Rising is the only 5 star rating I have given." - Barnes & Noble review "I was introduced to the series by a free book- that was for the rys chronicles - I read this book as a prequel and it fascinates me for the rest of the story. In case you missed it there is a corollary to our world and society. Disturbing to think about. Loved the book. Love the series!" - Barnes & Noble review "You will hold your breath, gulp, and shed a small tear. Falbe doesn't hold back at all! The first chapter starts out with a serious battle. How can you not get hooked?" - Amazon review "I thoroughly enjoyed the depth and development of the characters.. the unique storyline and the fact it is a true novel not a 200 page attempt to get me to buy the next in the series... I look forward to reading every single one of this authors books!" - Amazon review Rys Rising and its sequels create a completely published series similar in style and scope to Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, except everything comes together into a big conclusion. The series deals with themes of politics and religion as well as personal ambitions. The concept of humans existing as the pawns of magical creatures forms the foundation of the story. Fans of the author have compared Falbe's work to best-sellers such as Robin Hobb, Terry Goodkind, Peter V. Brett, and Brandon Sanderson.
