Book Outlines of Logic Psychology and Ethics

Download or read book Outlines of Logic Psychology and Ethics written by Arthur Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Logic, Psychology and Ethics The following pages do not lay claim to originality of thought, or even of language. But they cover the whole ground of the Mental and Moral Philosophy Course for the London University Pass B.A., and, in manuscript form, have been found useful by students preparing for that examination. In later years the questions on each branch of the course appear to have been set from a constantly enlarging circle of text-books; and the student who confines himself to one or two authorities, however excellent these may be, is sure to meet with many questions for which he is totally unprepared; while, if he extends the range of his reading, he is very likely to concentrate his attention on what is superfluous and, for his immediate purpose, without value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rational Good: A Study in the Logic of Practice The following chapters were originally written in 1908 - 9, in amplification of a sketch of ethical theory contained in my Morals in Evolution, which had been published three years earlier. I was not, however, satisfied with the result, and put the manuscript aside for several years. It has now been almost entirely re-written. My Obliga tions to various writers on Psychology and Ethics will be manifest, but the general theory which most nearly corresponds to the central doctrine of the work is one which I heard expounded in a paper read In New York in 1911 by a distinguished lecturer on Ethics, and have never met with again in print. Mr. J. A. Hobson kindly read the work in its original form, and made many valuable criticisms. Mr. A. W. Perris has performed the same service to the revised work, and several alterations and additions are due to his sugges tions. I have also to thank him for revising the proofs. The criticism of current theories of emotion has been revised, but has not been materially altered. The chapters on The Nature of Emotion and The Primary Emotions have been amended, enlarged, and largely rewritten. The second half of the book deals with the primary principles of action and with the ethical significance of results attained throughout. The discussion of the notion of Worth, which appears in the concluding chapter, embodies some of the results of an article on Natural Selection in Ethics which was published in 1901 in 'the Philosophical Review.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Thinking I cannot send this little book out without recognizing my obligation to Prof. John Dewey for the large number of seed thoughts which have come from his lectures on Logic, Ethics, and Education. But the particular applica tions, developments, and formulations of these ideas, as well as the underlying movement of thought, are my own; and I alone must be subject to whatever criticism they may deserve on account of their defects. I am indebted for valuable sug gestions to my colleagues, President Charles mckenny and Professor Herman C. Henderson, of the Milwaukee State Normal School, and also to Professor W. W. Charters, phd, of the University of Missouri, who were kind enough to read my manuscript before its final revision. Book The Theory of Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory of Ethics Classic Reprint written by Arthur Kenyon Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Ethics The logical framework of the position which as a matter of theory I have here attempted to defend will be found more particularly in the first three chapters. These undertake to be a connected piece of reasoning which to some extent stands or falls as a whole. The two more essential features are the conception of value, and the naturalistic theory of duty as having its source in certain negative emotional restrictions on the positive life of desire. In view of the fact that I disagree with his conclu sions on almost every point, I should like to acknowledge a special obligation to the ethical writings of Mr. G. E. Bloore. I have drawn to some extent in the following pages upon articles published at various times recently in the Philo sophical Review. The analysis has however been sharp ened at a good many points; and I trust the argument has been made more convincing by being brought together in a connected form.
