Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines for the Study of Art, Vol. 1 Not long ago the writer stood with a company Of others in the sacristy of the Duomo, in Florence, in the presence of a little angel once reverently attributed to Donatello, one of the loveliest creations of Florentine art. The silent eloquence Of that pure face needed no explanation, no translation into the halting language of words. Art was here at its simplest and its best. The party gazed rapt, enjoying one of those rare mo ments which compensate for the waiting and the work Of existence. But there was one who did not look at the angel. She was trying to locate it in her guide book. And as the few moments of contemplation were ended and the group moved on, she was heard to inquire: What did he say it was? I could not find it in the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The chronology of the Italian Renaissance, its character, and context have long been a topic of discussion among scholars. Some date its beginnings to the fourteenthcentury work of Giotto, others to the generation of Masaccio, Brunelleschi, and Donatello that fl ourished from around 1400. The close of the Renaissance has also proved elusive. Mannerism, for example, is variously considered to be an independent (but subsidiary) late aspect of Renaissance style or a distinct style in its own right."

Book Illustrated Notes on English Church History Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illustrated Notes on English Church History Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles Arthur Lane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Notes on English Church History, Vol. 2 The usual ancient authorities, which are everybody's property, have been freely used; but wherever modern summaries have been quoted, the source is duly acknowledged, and when known the price and publisher's name are added, so that those who wish to study the matter further may judge whether they can afford the luxury. Although no new light has been thrown upon a well-worn subject by these pages, they may help to diffuse the old light. Nothing has been stated which has not been generally accepted as true, or which is not useful to know; but the grouping of certain facts, as in the chapter on the dissolution of monasteries, varies at times from the customary methods yet never without good reason. Book Outline of Domestic Art Work for the High School

This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Domestic Art Work for the High School: With Bibliography The outlines given are in no sense intended as courses of study. They are simply classified topics of fundamental work from which courses can be made. The arm has been to organize the subject-matter under the different sub-divisions and to give some controlling ideas which will aid in adapting the work to conditions and needs of various schools. It is necessary at present to give some work in the high schools, which properly belongs in the grades, owing to the fact that very little work in Domestic Art is being done as yet, in the elementary schools. Some points to be kept in mind in planning a course of study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Historicizing the Enlightenment Volume 2

Download or read book Historicizing the Enlightenment Volume 2 written by Michael McKeon and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlightenment critics from Dryden through Johnson and Wordsworth conceived the modern view that art and especially literature entails a double reflection: a reflection of the world, and a reflection on the process by which that reflection is accomplished. Instead “neoclassicism” and “Augustanism” have been falsely construed as involving a one-dimensional imitation of classical texts and an unselfconscious representation of the world. In fact these Enlightenment movements adopted an oblique perspective that registers the distance between past tradition and its present reenactment, between representation and presence. Two modern movements, Romanticism and modernism, have appropriated as their own these innovations, which derive from Enlightenment thought. Both of these movements ground their error in a misreading of “imitation” as understood by Aristotle and his Enlightenment proponents. Rightly understood, neoclassical imitation, constitutively aware of the difference between what it knows and how it knows it, is an experimental inquiry that generates a range of prefixes—“counter-,” “mock-,” “anti-,” “neo-”—that mark formal degrees of its epistemological detachment. Romantic ideology has denied the role of the imagination in Enlightenment imitation, imposing on the eighteenth century a dichotomous periodization: duplication versus imagination, the mirror versus the lamp. Structuralist ideology has dichotomized narration and description, form and content, structure and history. Poststructuralist ideology has propounded for the novel a contradictory “novel tradition”—realism, modernism, postmodernism, postcolonialism—whose stages both constitute a sequence and collapse it, each stage claiming the innovation of the stage that precedes it. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Book Mastering the Art of French Cooking Volume 1

Download or read book Mastering the Art of French Cooking Volume 1 written by Julia Child and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The definitive cookbook on French cuisine for American readers: "What a cookbook should be: packed with sumptuous recipes, detailed instructions, and precise line drawings. Some of the instructions look daunting, but as Child herself says in the introduction, 'If you can read, you can cook.'" —Entertainment Weekly “I only wish that I had written it myself.” —James Beard Featuring 524 delicious recipes and over 100 instructive illustrations to guide readers every step of the way, Mastering the Art of French Cooking offers something for everyone, from seasoned experts to beginners who love good food and long to reproduce the savory delights of French cuisine. Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle break down the classic foods of France into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of dishes—from historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. Throughout, the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations—bound to increase anyone’s culinary repertoire. “Julia has slowly but surely altered our way of thinking about food. She has taken the fear out of the term ‘haute cuisine.’ She has increased gastronomic awareness a thousandfold by stressing the importance of good foundation and technique, and she has elevated our consciousness to the refined pleasures of dining." —Thomas Keller, The French Laundry
