Book Notes on English Etymology

Download or read book Notes on English Etymology written by Walter W. Skeat and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on English Etymology: Chiefly Reprinted From the Transactions of the Philological Society In a former volume, entitled A Students Pastime I reprinted a considerable number of my occasional contributions to 'Notes and Queries' during the years 1866 - 96. In the year 1898 many kind friends were so good as to contribute a sum of money for the purpose of presenting my portrait to Christs College, Cambridge. As somewhat more was contributed than was required for this purpose, a portion of the surplus was made over to me for the purpose of reprinting some more of my rather numerous stray articles without much risk of loss. This act of kind consideration, in conjunction with the good will of the Clarendon Press, is practically responsible for the appearance of the present volume; and these circumstances have suggested the reproduction of some of my articles on English philology which may perhaps be of no great interest to the general public, though I venture to hope that a few serious students of our language may find them useful. It is owing to the same circumstances that the tone of this introduction is more autobiographical than it would otherwise have been, and I gladly take this opportunity of thanking the kind friends who have done me this good turn. How the articles in the present volume came to be written is easily explained. After the appearance of my larger Etymological Dictionary in 1884, it was not long before I discovered that it required both corrections and additions. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of English Etymology, Vol. 1 In the present edition, the original text is printed entire, with no change but the correction of perhaps half a dozen errors of the press and the trans fer of the articles composing the Appendix to their proper places in the alphabet. My additions consist of notes upon a considerable number of words, a list of which is given at the end of this preface. These notes are inclosed in brackets and signed with the initial M. My observations, as will be seen, are confined almost wholly to historical derivation, and I have attempted little in the way of conjectural deduction from imitative sounds, from the supposed natural significance of primary consonantal combinations, or from the analogies of ancient and remote languages not' actually known to have contributed directly to the composition of the English vocabulary. This course has been imposed upon me as well by necessity as by choice. I will not indeed affect to say, with Capgrave, that I want ny al that schuld longe to a studier. Book A Brief Historical Outline of English Literature

Download or read book A Brief Historical Outline of English Literature written by Jeannette Augustus Marks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Historical Outline of English Literature: From the Origins to the Close of the Eighteenth Century This brief outline of the history of English Literature is intended simply for class use. The bibliographical refer ence is made largely with the Mt. Holyoke College Library in mind, and with the hope that the shelf numbers may [lighten the difficulties of looking for books when a student wishes to save all the time for reading. The aim has been not to multiply the numbers of authorities, historical and critical, and the number of authors proper, but to diminish them so far as the subject permitted, thus simplifying the work of the student. The Special Topics, too, have been limited. It has not been an easy task to do this, as subjects of interest in any period are countless, and to select wisely an impossibility. It is hoped, however, that both Bibliographical Reference, in which Miss Bertha E. Blakely has given invaluable assist ance, and Special Topics may prove not only helpful in an Historical Outline Course, but also an incentive to further work. Book An Etymological Dictionary of the Gaelic Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Etymological Dictionary of the Gaelic Language Classic Reprint written by Alexander Macbain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are a reader who loves learning about language and the meaning and origin of words, then An Etymological Dictionary of the Gaelic Language will delight your senses. This book was the first etymological dictionary of Gaelic, and in the Preface, Alexander Macbain writes that his dictionary is the purest distillation of Scottish Gaelic, purged of all the Irish words which found their way into the lexicon. The dictionary, which contains 6,900 words, is a thorough summary of Scottish Gaelic. Over two-thirds of the words derive from native Gaelic or Celtic, with around 20 percent of the words borrowed from other languages. The dictionary breaks down this information so that it is easy to understand, for example, "sinteag" means "to skip, or pace" which is derived from Gaelic "sun"; the word was added to English as "shindig." For an example of a non-Gaelic origin, try "brisg" the Gaelic word meaning "lively," which is derived from the Scandinavian and in English would be "brisk." Macbain outlines Gaelic etymology by putting the language in the context of its group. The Celtic group was once comprised of Welsh, Cornish, Breton, Irish, Manx and Gaelic, and these six languages are divided into Britannic and Gaelic subgroups. The primary reason for the division is the velar guttural, symbolized by "g." The book traces the difference in the meaning and pronunciation of words which begins with this language division. Alexander Macbain was a teacher, historian, philologist and scholar of Celtic mythology. His writing style communicates a large volume of information in an easily digestible way. Macbain was a prolific writer, and An Etymological Dictionary of the Gaelic Language is his most enduring book and language lovers will return to this volume often. Book A Study of English Words Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of English Words Classic Reprint written by Jessie MacMillan Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Study of English Words is a study of the growth of the English language. Anderson's book is not a dictionary or an examination of grammatical principles, but rather a detailed examination of the English language and the changes it had undergone as of the late nineteenth century. The book opens with a chapter on the defining principals of language development in which Anderson outlines his belief in the importance of etymology. The book then proceeds to examine the major changes that English words have undergone, focusing primarily on the external influences that have caused these changes. Individual chapters are devoted to Greek, Latin, and French elements in English, the artist's and scientist's use of words, the ever expanding list of synonyms for English words, and several other topics. While the author states in his preface that the book is intended as a textbook, A Study of English Words is surprisingly devoid of any review questions. Anderson's book is a thorough and competent examination of the growth of the English language. The author has appropriately identified the major forces that influence change in the language, and has effectively highlighted these changes. While the book can seem dry at times, Anderson's concise language ensures the major teaching points are never obstructed. A Study of English Words is a book that will appeal to the true English-language enthusiast. Those fascinated by the development of language will find this to be an informative and worthwhile read. Book Essentials of English Speech and Literature

Download or read book Essentials of English Speech and Literature written by Frank H. Vizetelly and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Speech and Literature: An Outline of the Origin and Growth of the Language, With Chapters on the Influence of the Bible, the Value of the Dictionary, and the Use of the Grammar in the Study of the English Tongue To acquire a knowledge of the essentials of English speech and literature is an accomplishment which should commend itself to all who speak the English tongue. From the point of view of this book, these essentials are indicated by the following questions: (1) How did the language come into being? (2) Who was responsible for its origin? (3) What changes have taken place in its orthographical development? (4) To whom is this development due? (5) Through what media has it been attained? (6) What were the refining influences that have brought it through its crude original forms to the plastic medium for expressing thought which we have to-day? To present these essentials in concrete form is the purpose of this book, which records the chief facts concerning the historical and ethnological development of the language, and which shows, by illustrative examples from different periods, the progress made therein. Therefore, the aim has been: (1) To trace the evolution of English speech. (2) To describe the development and growth of English literature. (3) To direct attention to mutations in English orthography and syntax. To this end the following pages combine the history of the English language with that of English literature to the time of Milton, whose orthographic and syntactical forms approximate closely to our own. It tells, in brief, the story of the language from the dawn of civilization in Britain practically to our time, so that the reader may be said to have before him a conspectus of the different stages of assimilation through which it has passed. Book The Origin of the Original Hebrew of Ecclesiasticus Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the 'Original Hebrew' of Ecclesiasticus The discovery of the fragments of the 'Original Hebrew' of the Wisdom of Ben-Sira is too familiar a story to need recapitulation. Since the time when it was first announced in The Guardian some three years ago, there have been at least five editions of the Hebrew text, and a number of translations, reviews, and dissertations by scholars of varying fame and ability. Most of these have accepted the supposition that these fragments contain an original and not a retranslation, without even discussing the other possibility; Israel Levi in his treatise (Quelques Notes &c.) is perhaps the only writer who has endeavoured to demonstrate it at length. In his elaborate discussion of this matter it is natural, and perhaps unavoidable, that he should mingle arguments that are weighty with others that are of no weight. Where it appears that the 'Original Hebrew' gives certainly what the author intended, whereas the Greek is clearly wrong, there is undoubtedly a strong presumption in favour of the originality of the former; but where the Greek is probably or even possibly right, there is no such presumption. A considerable number of the passages which he cites will unfortunately be found to come under the latter rather than the former head. Such a passage as xli. II 'the sorrow of men is about their bodies' (Greek), 'the vanity of man is in his body' ('Original Hebrew'), where the difference certainly turns on the confusion of the Hebrew words ebel and hebel, ought not, for example, to be cited in arguing this question. For the notion conveyed by the Greek is certainly more intelligible, even though it be less profound, than that conveyed by the Hebrew. Book Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature Vol 6

Download or read book Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature Vol 6 written by William Allan Neilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature, Vol. 6: The Origins and Sources of the Court of Love This volume is substantially a dissertation presented to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University in May, 1898, to fulfil a requirement made of candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The investigation was begun as an inquiry into the pseudo-Chaucerian Court of Love; and in the first chapter a rearrangement of the text of that poem, and in the seventh certain conclusions as to its sources, represent the main results of this inquiry. But the search for sources led naturally to a wider and wider extension of the field, until the dissertation finally included a general account of the rise and development of some of the leading features of mediaeval love-allegory. The number of instances I have found of the central conception of a court held by the God or Goddess of Love and attended by personifications of abstract qualities is so large as almost to justify the treatment of this class of allegory as a separate literary genre. The chapter on the Statutes of Love attempts to trace the origin and indicate the extent of one of the most interesting features of this genre, and at the same time presents a body of material for the study of mediaeval social ideals. The chapter on Philobone is devoted to a short analysis of a familiar type in the literature of the Middle Ages; and that on the Bird's Matins contains a collection of evidence possessing interest other than literary in its bearing on the mediaeval attitude towards religion.
