Book excerpt: It is true, they don't make things the way they used to, they don't do things the way they used to, and the times are not what they used to be. This book is a journey back to the days of my early childhood through high school. What was like to be raised in Indiana basketball country? It was an exciting time with over 700 high school teams from every corner of the state of Indiana competing each year in a single elimination tournament for the Indiana State Basketball Championship. One small school triumphed in a miracle over the great odds against them. It is still for me to imagine what those hundreds of Indiana basketball heroes experienced by having family, friends, classmates, cheerleaders, teachers, community fans for all kinds of reasons, even stranger bystanders, cheering and shouting them on with encouragement. Book The Seventy Thousand Dollar Outhouse

Download or read book The Seventy Thousand Dollar Outhouse written by Donald D Yackel and published by Austin Macauley. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second book by Donald D. Yackel continues the format and organization of his first, The Idling Bulldozer and Other Paddling Adventures. However, unlike that offering, this one starts with a personal reflection on the author's connection to boats and the water. Subsequent chapters describe paddling trips in Canada, Costa Rica, Florida, and Mexico. While each chapter provides a glimpse into part of the world most readers will never visit, the author's vivid descriptions will take you there. As one reviewer put it: "I am an armchair adventurer. I loved the descriptions of the various areas in the U.S. and Canada...the terrain, the wildlife...places I will never see...places most people will never see or experience. The challenges of paddling in various places and conditions, the hardships, the challenges and the rewards make for a great and interesting read." A second reviewer writes: "Even if you are not a paddling enthusiast, the stories are fun! Don writes in a conversational tone...it's like you're sitting next to him while he tells his stories." Each tale is a memoir of what the author experienced on the adventure: what he saw, what he did, how it felt, whom he traveled with, and the dangers and rewards experienced. Whether you are a veteran kayaker, a rank beginner, or have never been in a boat before, you can find something to relate to in this book.

Wilderness Adventures on Horseback is an amazing read of the true, back-country adventures of gutsy horses and stalwart friends. Download or read book An Alaskan Adventure written by Alan R. Adaschik and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Adaschik's dream was to visit Alaska; America's last frontier and a place which abounds with wildlife and unspoiled wilderness. Upon retirement, Al and his wife Gayle sold everything and bought a thirty-seven foot Damon Intruder motor home to make his dream a reality. "An Alaskan Adventure" is a narrative about Al and Gayle's trip which highlights the places they visited and the wonderful things they experienced along the way. "An Alaskan Adventure" commences in Indiana following a visit with Al's relatives who live there. After negotiating the traffic jams of Chicago, Al and Gayle traveled I-94 across the northern Great Plains visiting Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana along the way. Heading north, they visited Glacier National Park and continued on to tour Yoho, Banff, and Jasper national parks in Canada. Afterwards, Al & Gayle picked up the Alaskan Highway which took them to a realization of Al's dream. The reminder of the book is about Al & Gayle's travels around the Great Alaskan Triangle, a circuit of 900 miles defined by the cities of Tok, Fairbanks, and Anchorage. While negotiating this triangle, Al and Gayle's primary goals were to find gold in one of the many streams they crossed and to also find a Wooly Mammoth frozen in a glacier. Toward this end, they took side trips to the White Mountains National Recreation Area, Denali National Park, The Top of the World Highway, and the towns of Homer and Chicken. "An Alaskan Adventure" is not just a book about touring Alaska. Al is an environmentalist and a theme evident throughout the book is that the beauty we find around us is fleeting and that if we, as a species, continue to over-populate our world, what we see and value so highly is sure to go away.

Book Who Ate Up All the Shinga

Download or read book Who Ate Up All the Shinga written by Wan-suh Park and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Park Wan-suh is a best-selling and award-winning writer whose work has been widely translated and published throughout the world. Who Ate Up All the Shinga? is an extraordinary account of her experiences growing up during the Japanese occupation of Korea and the Korean War, a time of great oppression, deprivation, and social and political instability. Park Wan-suh was born in 1931 in a small village near Kaesong, a protected hamlet of no more than twenty families. Park was raised believing that "no matter how many hills and brooks you crossed, the whole world was Korea and everyone in it was Korean." But then the tendrils of the Japanese occupation, which had already worked their way through much of Korean society before her birth, began to encroach on Park's idyll, complicating her day-to-day life. With acerbic wit and brilliant insight, Park describes the characters and events that came to shape her young life, portraying the pervasive ways in which collaboration, assimilation, and resistance intertwined within the Korean social fabric before the outbreak of war. Most absorbing is Park's portrait of her mother, a sharp and resourceful widow who both resisted and conformed to stricture, becoming an enigmatic role model for her struggling daughter. Balancing period detail with universal themes, Park weaves a captivating tale that charms, moves, and wholly engrosses.

Book The Sun Is a Compass

Download or read book The Sun Is a Compass written by Caroline Van Hemert and published by Little, Brown Spark. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Cheryl Strayed, the gripping story of a biologist's human-powered journey from the Pacific Northwest to the Arctic to rediscover her love of birds, nature, and adventure. During graduate school, as she conducted experiments on the peculiarly misshapen beaks of chickadees, ornithologist Caroline Van Hemert began to feel stifled in the isolated, sterile environment of the lab. Worried that she was losing her passion for the scientific research she once loved, she was compelled to experience wildness again, to be guided by the sounds of birds and to follow the trails of animals. In March of 2012, she and her husband set off on a 4,000-mile wilderness journey from the Pacific rainforest to the Alaskan Arctic, traveling by rowboat, ski, foot, raft, and canoe. Together, they survived harrowing dangers while also experiencing incredible moments of joy and grace -- migrating birds silhouetted against the moon, the steamy breath of caribou, and the bond that comes from sharing such experiences. A unique blend of science, adventure, and personal narrative, The Sun is a Compass explores the bounds of the physical body and the tenuousness of life in the company of the creatures who make their homes in the wildest places left in North America. Inspiring and beautifully written, this love letter to nature is a lyrical testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Winner of the 2019 Banff Mountain Book Competition: Adventure Travel
