Book excerpt: Adventure and outdoor sports - from rock climbing to freestyle kayaking – are a modern social phenomenon that can tell us much about the relationship between sport, culture and contemporary society. In this engaging new introductory text, adventure sports are used to illustrate key concepts in social theory and to demonstrate why an understanding of social theory is essential for any student taking a course in sport, adventure, or outdoor education. Each chapter in the book introduces a key ‘classical’ or modern social theorist, including Marx, Durkheim, Weber and Elias, or a universal topic or issue in social theory, such as sustainability, commodification or identity. Within each of those chapters the theorist or topic is brought to life through case studies of adventurous activities and lived experiences, helping the reader to connect their own sporting and adventurous interests with the frameworks we use to understand wider culture and society. Book Adapted Camping and Hiking Curriculum

Download or read book Adapted Camping and Hiking Curriculum written by Pamela Patterson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this project was to develop an adapted camping and hiking curriculum that teaches outdoor adventure transferable skills to positively influence life skills for adult transition students in South Orange County, California. Outdoor adventure transferable skills such as: achieving self-concepts, critical thinking, communication, empowerment, independence, respect, social integration, and trust are similar to those that adult transition students are required to learn and are necessary to live as independently as possible, in order to reach their full potential as adults. Adults with disabilities desire the same things as adults without disabilities and recent trends show that "emerging adults" (ages 16-22) desire to participate in outdoor adventure. This project reveals the lack of adapted outdoor adventure programs currently available in South Orange County. Lastly, this project presents other service providers with an evaluation for outdoor adventure skills that are transferable to life skills for adults with disabilities.

Book Testing the Adventure Model for Outdoor Adventure Recreation Participation

Download or read book Testing the Adventure Model for Outdoor Adventure Recreation Participation written by Michael Anthony Schuett and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to test a revised version of the Adventure Model (Ewert & Hollenhorst, 1989). This research attempted to explain the preferences and behaviors of adventure recreation participants. Due to the methodological shortcomings with the testing of their model, several modifications and additions were made. This study proposed that the level of enduring involvement of white water kayaking participants could be predicted by the following variables: frequency of participation, skill level, experience, social orientation, environmental preference, psychological outcomes, perception of risk, locus of control, and sensation seeking. The subjects used in this study consisted of a convenience sample 584 white water kayakers from a private outdoor recreation enterprise. Multiple regression analysis and analyses of variance were used to analyze the data. The results of the study found that the level of enduring involvement was predicted by skill level, psychological outcomes, gender, and partially by perception of risk. The mediating variables of skill level, age, and gender were also found to be significant contributors in explaining differences in white water kayakers. The information contained in this study has important theoretical implications for developing future adventure recreation participation models and for understanding the social and psychological aspects of white water kayaking. Managers in the public and private sector will also benefit in terms of marketing, promotion, and programming of white water kayaking.

Throughout the text, pedagogical aids such as learning outcomes, chapter summaries, and reflection questions help students retain and apply knowledge. Inclusive Leisure also includes the following features to enhance student engagement: Professionals in Action sidebars offer a real-world look at the common issues and inclusive solutions that have been employed by professionals in the field. It defines the strengths-based approach and examines foundational and theoretical concepts as well as the legislation that mandates inclusive leisure services. Part II provides in-depth information on inclusive practices that can be used by leisure service professionals to ensure a positive experience for all individuals with disabilities. It challenges readers to go beyond inclusive programs and to apply inclusion in all organizational aspects. Part III offers applied information and examples of inclusion across the breadth of leisure services, including programming in sports, fitness, aquatics, art, outdoor adventure, travel and tourism, special events, and more.
