This volume presents studies in culture, communication, and language, all of which strive, through a variety of theoretical perspectives, to develop understanding of such challenges and perhaps offer practical solutions. Encountering otherness may evoke fears, negative attitudes, and a corresponding will to dismiss the otherness in front of us—either consciously or unconsciously. This denial of otherness may also be subtle. Thinking about otherness, as described in this volume, also raises questions about how otherness is represented and mediated and about the possible role of third parties in facilitating communication in such situations. Sometimes a third party can play a crucial role in facilitating the communication process and serve as a channel of communication. Trust in humanity as a bridge to community requires a subtle balance between representations of self and other. Various problems arise in intercultural mediation, which may be caused by cultural and political differences, and these are sometimes used to validate stereotypical beliefs and images. The editors argue that in both academic and art circles, European perspectives have widely been understood as universal.

Book excerpt: Out of the Attic: Leveraging Women's Experience of Otherness in the Evangelical Christian Church is a non-traditional master's thesis, or synthesis. It's part research through reading and a change project, part personal reflection, and held together with the "Story of the Madwoman in the Attic." The central question to this synthesis is, "How can women's experience of 'otherness' in the Evangelical Christian church be leveraged for change in that community?" In my response, I composed a model of employing story for change. The process of working with this question helped me to make sense of my own experience as a woman who felt "other" within the evangelical world, despite (or due to?) being raised within it. Answering the question, I drew upon literature in the areas of women in Christianity and incorporated reflections on a women's group in which I had participated as an undergraduate as an Evangelical Christian college. I also studied texts for using story for change. Finally, I practiced what I was learning about story with a small women's spirituality group navigating some significant changes in its goals and structure. I employed a holistic systemic approach to the synthesis, informed through my master's program in Whole Systems Design. By holistic and systemic we mean that human systems are sets of relationships of dynamic parts, not static monoliths. We engage with these systems with attention to fostering relationships that facilitate the whole system's achievement of its goals. But ultimately, I started and ended with my own experience. Years of feeling "other" within my faith community led me to the texts and friendships that validated my point of view and helped me to express my faith in my own terms. I experienced, first hand, the importance of sharing personal stories. That personal value was given public significance when, in graduate school, I studied the application of story for change. Synthesizing this study and experience presented new insights into my faith and my participation in a faith community. I hope that the completed book fosters new awareness and action for its readers as well.

In "The Woman Who Rode Away" Lawrence dramatises the relation between two diametrically opposed cultures: the Western and the Amerindian. The story of the woman who escaped from her ranch at once highlights and subverts the preconceived ideas about the Red Indians' "savage" (48) culture and cult. Yet, in filigree, the narrator of the story subtly arouses the reader's "willing suspension of disbelief" and awe by conferring respectability on the white woman's self-sacrifice for the sake of the Red Indians' sun. In a masterly "tour de force," Lawrence uses this highly dramatised narrative to serve his own overarching assertion that Western civilisation, as a universal ideal, has no future. The White Man's Burden as an imperialist predicament has turned the world into a nightmarish place prone to global warfare and strife. The only escape from this deadly situation seems to lie in the dialectical interchange with other different cultures, different but not inferior, which might vitally contaminate and even rejuvenate decadent Western civilisation.

In the late 1990s it gained international attention in academic circles. It was reviewed favorably in specialized philosophy journals such as Review of Metaphysics and quoted extensively, most notably by Paul Ricoeur in one of the legendary French thinker¿s last books. It has long been out of print. Birnbaum¿s study explores Husserl¿s theory of temporality and his conception of the Other. The reason for examining these two issues together is that they appear to be closely related and that they illuminate not only each other but also phenomenology¿s understanding of what it is to be a subject. In opposition to the commonly held view that the idea of a ¿decentered¿ and open subject has developed subsequently to and partly as a critique of Husserl¿s position, this study endeavors to show that his notion of subjectivity is based on a highly sophisticated notion of alterity. The book provides a theoretical framework to Birnbaum¿s more aphoristic essay Chronology (2005, new edition 2007). Daniel Birnbaum who has written extensively about contemporary art from a theoretical perspective has, since more than a decade, a close working relationship with Danish artist Olafur Eliasson who has produced a special project for this new edition. Reaching back to the New Testament metaphor of salvation as reconciliation, Volf proposes the idea of embrace as a theological response to the problem of exclusion.
