Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woodland Gleanings To those who live in the country, or repair to it from our cities and towns for recreation or recruitment of health, we trust this will be an acceptable book, especially if they are unacquainted with Forest-trees. Our aim has been to produce a volume that will convey general and particular information respecting the timber-trees chiefly cultivated in the United Kingdom, to induce further inquiry respecting them, and to impart a new interest to the Woodland. To effect this we have briefly given their history and description, together with their botanical characters, remarks from our best authors on their habits and ornamental properties, on the usual mode of their cultivation, and on the value or utility of their timber. We have also introduced accounts of such remarkable trees as we considered of sufficient note to interest the general reader. It has been objected that a few species, not recognised as Forest trees, have been included in this work; such is the Hawthorn, Holly, Mountain Ash, and Wild Cherry. Book Forests and Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forests and Trees Classic Reprint written by B. J. Hales and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Trees This book has been written to assist in impressing upon the young the value of our forests and to give them some appreciation of what is being done, as well as of what must yet be done, in order to preserve them. It is not a handbook on forestry, but contains interesting information which, it is hoped, will tend to create a healthy public opinion regarding the use and care of trees. While the book is really the expression of that appreciation of trees which comes only from long and intimate acquaintance, yet the literature on the subject has been freely used, and the author wishes to acknowledge the help received from the following: Sargent's "Manual of the Trees of North America"; Britton's "North American Trees"; Fernow's "Care of Trees"; Britton and Brown's Illustrated Flora of the Northern States and Canada; "Gray's New Manual of Botany" by Robinson and Fernald; Rydberg's "Flora of the Rocky Mountains and Adjacent Plains"; Coulter and Nelson's "Rocky Mountain Flora;" and Macoun's "Catalogue of Canadian Plants." Very particular mention should also be made of the many excellent publications of the Forestry Branch of the Department of the Interior; and special thanks are due to Mr. R. H. Campbell, Director of Forestry, for valuable suggestions and assistance, as well as for a very careful and suggestive reading of the proof sheets by the staff of the Forestry Branch. Book Wayside and Woodland Trees

Download or read book Wayside and Woodland Trees written by Edward Step and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wayside and Woodland Trees: A Pocket Guide to the British Sylva The purpose of this volume is not the addition of one more to the numerous treatises upon sylviculture or forestry, but to afford a straightforward means for the identification of our native trees and larger shrubs for the convenience of the rural rambler and Nature-lover. The list of British arborescent plants is a some what meagre one, but all that could be done in a pocket volume by way of supplementing it has been done - by adding some account of those exotics that have long been naturalized in our woods, and some of more recent introduction that have already become conspicuous ornaments in many public and private parks. The photographs, it should be explained, have been taken upon a novel plan in most cases. This consists in photograph ing a deciduous tree in its summer glory, and returning to the same spot in winter and photographing the same individual, so that a striking comparison may be made between the summer and winter aspects of the principal species. Supplementary photographs are given, in many cases, of the bole, which exhibit the character of the bark, and should prove a valuable aid in the identification of species. The figures in the text have all been expressly drawn for the work with a view to showing at a glance the general character of the foliage, and in most cases the flower and fruit. The work is divided into two sections. Part I. Including those species that are generally considered to be indigenous to the British Islands, with briefer notices of the introduced species that are closely related to them. Part II. Being devoted to those of foreign origin, some of them introduced so long ago that they are commonly regarded as native by those who are not botanists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Trees Every tree is beautiful, every grove is pleasant and every forest is grand. The planting and care of trees is exhilarating and a pledge of faith in the future; but these aesthetic features, though elevating, are incidental. The people need wood. They have had it in abundance and have been prodigal in its use, as we are too often careless of blessings which seem to have no end. Our his tory, poetry, and romance are intimately associated with the woods. Our industries have developed more rapidly because we have had plenty of cheap timber. Millions of acres of bare hillsides that produce nothing profitably should be growing trees. These words of an American statesman are true of other lands as well as of the United States; and it is one of the objects of the present work to draw attention to the individual beauty and interest of each familiar species. In doing this the efforts of the author have been most ably reinforced by. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
