Book excerpt: The story centres around Dikeledi, a young girl in the "independent" homeland of Transkei, one of the "Bantustans" of the former apartheid era in South Africa. The Sotho tribe is in the minority in this area and culture still plays a very big role in the villages. Education is not a priority for most of the people there, so when Dikeledi meets and falls in love with a youth in high school, she is confused by his ambitions to study further and go to university. They marry despite the fact that her husband's mother hates her, mainly due to the fact that Dikeledi is not traditionally considered beautiful, comes from a poor home and her family is not known in the village, neither is she a relative. Apartheid laws ensure that, even when Dikeledi's husband wants to take her with him to Johannesburg, without valid documents, it is near impossible for her to live with him, and she has to endure her mother-in-law's abuse.

Book Our Life Is A Tale That Is Told

Download or read book Our Life Is A Tale That Is Told written by Charlene Maxfield and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all tell a story as we walk through the pages and chapters of our lives. Mine began in Farmersville, a small Texas town outside of Dallas. In those early days of my youth, I attended the great tent revivals of the 1950s. The atmosphere in these services was electrifying as the glory of God fell upon the place. I witnessed unbelievable miracles of healing; some happened in my own family. These experiences caused a longing to know God more intensely. I wanted to be used by Him and obey His every command, no matter how out of the ordinary His directions might be. Each chapter of this book is filled with life lessons to help build your faith and encourage you to do what God asks of you. As you do, watch Him open supernatural doors that men cannot open or close. Travel with me to a hospital room where a young man lies in a coma on his deathbed. Watch God bring him back to life. Leaving pride behind, stand up with me in a busy restaurant and get the attention of all present. Speak a word of encouragement to a military troupe about to leave for war. Follow my footsteps through the sands of Egypt and see what Joseph saw. Stand in awe as you explore the ancient archeological ruins of Petra in southern Jordan. Travel with me to the land of biblical Israel and walk where Jesus walked. Go with me to Italy and stroll through the frozen city of Pompeii, buried under the volcanic ashes of Vesuvius. Experience the magnificence of France, England, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and many more. Let's go to the busy streets of New York City, home of Lady Liberty. Dine with me and with the rich and famous in Hollywood. In every place, God is always present with a lesson to be learned. I have lived a colorful life, to say the least. Each chapter of my life is filled with events, which I hope will inspire you and build your faith as you travel down life's highways.

Book excerpt: No one questions that men are profoundly influenced by their fathers, but the shape and substance of that influence varies with each family. In this, the first anthology of nonfiction prose to explore this issue in depth, editor Steven Shepherd has collected a diverse and invariably compelling group of narratives about sons and their fathers. "Fourteen excellent essays by some of our best writers," says Anne Morris of the Austin American-Statesman. Among the contributors: James Baldwin, who reflects in his classic "Notes of a Native Son," on the father he barely knew, "partly because we shared, in our different fashions, the vice of stubborn pride." The brothers Geoffrey and Tobias Wolff, who write of their father from dramatically different perspectives. A second-generation undertaker, Thomas Lynch, who writes lovingly of burying his father. And the acclaimed scholar of African-American culture, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who grew up with a father who "was not a race man," yet their arguments were vital to the son's education.

Book England s Cross of Gold

Download or read book England s Cross of Gold written by James Ashley Morrison and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In England's Cross of Gold, James Ashley Morrison challenges the conventional view that the UK's ruinous return to gold in 1925 was inevitable. Instead, he offers a new perspective on the struggles among elites in London to define and redefine the gold standard—from the first discussions during the Great War; through the titanic ideological clash between Winston Churchill and John Maynard Keynes; to the final, ill-fated implementation of the "new gold standard." Following World War I, Churchill promised to restore the ancient English gold standard—and thus Britain's greatness. Keynes portended that this would prove to be one of the most momentous—and ill-advised—decisions in financial history. From the vicious peace settlement at Versailles to the Great Depression, the gold standard was central to the worst disasters of the time. Economically, Churchill's move exacerbated the difficulties of repairing economies shattered by war. Politically, it set countries at odds as each endeavored to amass gold, sowing the seeds of further strife. England's Cross of Gold, grounded in masterful archival research, reveals that these events turned crucially on the beliefs of a handful of pivotal policymakers. It recasts the legends of Churchill, Keynes, and their collision, and it shows that the gold standard itself was a metaphysical abstraction rooted more in mythology than material reality.

Book excerpt: Bestselling Author and Missionary Rolland Baker Reveals the Heart of True, Lasting Revival "There has been much talk in recent years of revival," says bestselling author and missionary Rolland Baker, "so much so that I wonder at times whether revival itself has become the object of devotion." Too often believers seek out revival, not the Reviver. When unchecked, they often pursue an emotional or physical experience or focus on how many came to Christ, rather than worship Jesus himself. Yet the heart of true, lasting revival is Christ--of falling in love with him so deeply that you can't help but tell others about him. And that, says Baker, is what has fueled him, his wife, Heidi, and all of Iris Ministries over the last thirty years. "This book is about sustaining revival over decades," says Baker. "By that I mean it is a book about falling in love and staying in love with the person of Jesus Christ. Revival is about the Reviver, nothing more and nothing less. My prayer is that you will fall in love with him with all your heart as you read these pages, and that you will not be able to resist giving that love away, wherever you place your feet."
