Book It s Our Turn to Eat

Download or read book It s Our Turn to Eat written by Michela Wrong and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-06-03 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of one man’s fight against corruption: "like a John Le Carré novel” that shows “how and why Kenya descended into political violence” (Washington Post). In January 2003, Kenya was hailed as a model of democracy after the peaceful election of President Mwai Kibaki. By appointing respected longtime reformer John Githongo as anticorruption czar, the new Kikuyu government signaled its determination to end the shady practices that had tainted the previous regime. Yet only two years later, Githongo himself was on the run, having secretly compiled evidence of official malfeasance throughout the new administration. Unable to remain silent, Githongo, at great personal risk, made the painful choice to go public. The result was a Kenyan Watergate. Michela Wrong’s account of how a pillar of the establishment turned whistle-blower—instantly becoming one of the most hated and admired men in Kenya—grips like a political thriller while probing the very roots of the nation’s predicament. “A fast-paced political thriller. . . . Wrong’s gripping, thoughtful book stands as both a tribute to Githongo’s courage and a cautionary tale.” —New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: What comes after you "lean in?" In Our Turn, Kirstine Stewart, Chief Strategy Officer of Diply GoViral--and recently named to Canadian Business's Power 50 of 2016 list because she "helps women discover their leadership potential"--draws on her own extensive experience to answer that question in smart and practical ways. Canada's own Kirstine Stewart has joined the ranks of other stand-out new technology leaders such as Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer, but she has come to that position by a very different route. She got her first job when she applied for a position as a "girl Friday" at a film distribution house. Having worked her way up from the bottom--under women and men, leaders good and bad--she believes it's time we leaped past the question of how women might create change in the working world and exploit the fact that profound change is already under way. The digital revolution, and the wave of millennials who are entering the work force with very different expectations than the generations who preceded them, have created a new reality that demands a new style of leader with attributes and perspectives that make women the natural front-runners. The opportunity is there. The question Stewart tackles in Our Turn is how do we seize it. Stewart's own track in the world has been exceptional, and littered with firsts, including being the first woman and the youngest person ever to head the CBC. Not only does she illuminate the broad strokes of the way forward for women, and her own principles of leadership, she digs down into the nitty-gritty of how she has managed to excel and to lead while staying true to who she is as a person. Whether you're the CEO or the administrative assistant, there is something for you in Our Turn.

Book excerpt: Anna, a hard-working businesswoman, wasn't looking for love when a car accident introduced her to Bobby. He was all she wanted in a man, and most men would have bailed out when unimaginable suffering knocked on her door. Instead, it made their love stronger. Unknown to her, God helped arrange the accident to bring them together. After suffering a horrific abduction, nearly starved and beaten to death, together with the help from above, Anna and Bobby create the largest organization of its kind in the world. "OUR TURN" takes over where local governments fail, corruption rules, and police no longer help. They step in to save people in need and give them a second chance at life. The organization will take any request for help throughout the world, "...but they can respond only in a few cases." If "OUR TURN" responds to a request, the opposition is destroyed, at the cost of many security members losing their lives to save others. They are limited to whom they can help, because it is funded by donations. Their love encounters many obstacles, but they still find time for one another. Words: 50,024 Strong violence

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Customer Service is the new standard for creating a 5-star customer experience As much as technology has improved our lives, for many people customer service experiences remain unnecessarily frustrating. But the advent of Digital Customer Service (DCS) promises to make these interactions seamless and effortless by creating experiences that occur entirely on a customer's own screen, even in situations where it is preferable to speak to an agent. Digital Customer Service: Transforming Customer Experience for an On-Screen World traces the evolution of customer service—as well as the evolution of customer expectations and the underlying psychology that drives customer behavior - from the days of the first call centers in the 1980s all the way to today's digital world. Written for Customer Service and Customer Experience leaders as well as C-suite executives (CEOs, CFOs, CIOs), Digital Customer Service helps business leaders balance three critical priorities: Creating an excellent experience for customers that increases customer loyalty and profitability Driving down the cost of Customer Service/Support interactions, while increasing revenue through Sales interactions Moving quickly toward the goal of "digital transformation" We have discovered—in our research and our first-hand experience—that when companies commit to achieving true Digital Customer Service, they can make significant progress toward all three of these goals at once. Digital Customer Service provides the roadmap for how your company can get there. And when you do, who wins? EVERYONE.

Book A Noble But Onerous Duty

Download or read book A Noble But Onerous Duty written by Francis K. Sang and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a humble beginning as a son of employees in white settlers' farms in the central Rift Valley, Dr Francis K. Sang overcame many odds to rise through the ranks of the Kenya Police and become the 4th Kenyan Director of the Criminal Investigation Department. He served in this position for 4 years before he was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the changeover of government in Kenya at the end of 2002. He was tasked with the establishment of the Nairobi Secretariat to coordinate issues to do with small arms in the region. This he did and later helped transform the secretariat into the Regional Centre for Small Arms (RECSA), a regional inter-governmental body that coordinates activities aimed at controlling and reducing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the Eastern Africa, Great Lakes and Horn of Africa region and bordering states. In this autobiography, he relates his experiences, from the difficult circumstances surrounding his birth and childhood, his struggles to get an education in spite of the many obstacles that he faced and his experiences in the police force, particularly in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) during the tenure of the 2nd President of Kenya, Daniel arap Moi. He also relates his experiences after the NARC Government took over in 2002 and sent most senior security offi cers in the former government packing, either on retirement or on transfer to other less prestigious positions. He further relates how, through determination, he has been able to achieve his academic dreams which had been deferred earlier in his life owing to financial constraints, culminating in the acquisition of a PhD late in life. He also speaks about the role his family has played in enabling him to achieve all he has in his life. Reflecting on his long journey that has brought him to the place where he is today, the author also gives a number of insights on his work and life. This autobiography should serve as interesting reading to the general public as well as to persons serving in the disciplined forces, considering that it is the first from amongst persons that have served in the police force and risen through the ranks to the very top.
