It was delivered by peter P. Lowe, esq., andwas published by request. In Ohio it is still quoted, as frequently as either Shakespeare or the Bible. It is as quota ble as Poor Richard's Almanac. In whatever has been wr1tten by them, they have aimed at brevity, especially in the Historical Sketch, which, by the in struction of the Society, they have prefixed to the work. A complete his tory would require more space than they felt at liberty to occupy; there fore, while they have endeavored to delineate, with some minuteness, the formation and early history of the Society, they have given only a brief outline of the most important events of subsequent years. It has been their constant effort to render the work perfect in its preparation, and faultless in its execution; if they have failed in any respect, they can only plead the peculiar difficulties with which such a labor is necessarily at tended. At a meeting of the Trustees of Phillips Academy, March 31st, 1859, the Treasurer of the Board, Rev. J. L. Taylor, having submitted a Report of the labor devolved on him by a vote of the Committee of Exigencies, Sept. 23, 1858, in preparing a Memorial of the late Semi-Centennial Celebration in the Theological Seminary, - from which Report it appears, that, in addition to his own care in the work, the entire mass of manuscript presented has been carefully read by Professor Park, and by Messrs. "Hear my apology which I make before you this day." Half-way down the bluff northwest of our town is the "College Spring." How long it has been there no one knows. The stream it sends down the hillside is as bright and full as when, on the 22d of November, 1832, James Thomson referred to it in a letter to Williamson Dunn, as one reason for selecting the original site on which to build a college. "'Tis rushing now adown the hill, And gushing out below; Half frantic in its joyousness, And wild in eager flow," St. Paul, once the leader of Jews, had become a christian, and for this the Jews sought to kill him. To them he said, "Hear now my apology." That is, his reasons for so great a change. If "College Spring" needed any apology it might point to the stream of clear, sweet water which flows from it. Fifty years ago, near this spring, an event occurred which interests us to-day. It was the founding of Wabash College. The thought which was realized in the act just named was born in the heart of James Thomson, the pastor of the Presbyterian church of Crawfordsville. It would be easy to show that neither the thought nor the act came by chance. Its antecedents were found in the home of a country minister, where all the children were "born again," two of whom became men whose influence has been felt powerfully at home and in lands beyond the sea.
