Book Ancestor Worship and the Elite in Late Iron Age Scandinavia

Download or read book Ancestor Worship and the Elite in Late Iron Age Scandinavia written by Triin Laidoner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancestor worship is often assumed by contemporary European audiences to be an outdated and primitive tradition with little relevance to our societies, past and present. This book questions that assumption and seeks to determine whether ancestor ideology was an integral part of religion in Viking Age and early medieval Scandinavia. The concept is examined from a broad socio-anthropological perspective, which is used to structure a set of case studies which analyse the cults of specific individuals in Old Norse literature. The situation of gods in Old Norse religion has been almost exclusively addressed in isolation from these socio-anthropological perspectives. The public gravemound cults of deceased rulers are discussed conventionally as cases of sacral kingship, and, more recently, religious ruler ideology; both are seen as having divine associations in Old Norse scholarship. Building on the anthropological framework, this study introduces the concept of ‘superior ancestors’, employed in social anthropology to denote a form of political ancestor worship used to regulate social structure deliberately. It suggests that Old Norse ruler ideology was based on conventional and widely recognised religious practices revolving around kinship and ancestors and that the gods were perceived as human ancestors belonging to elite families.

Book Encounters with Vidar

Download or read book Encounters with Vidar written by Are Thoresen and published by Temple Lodge Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the threshold that divides the elemental and etheric worlds, Are Thoresen encounters two spiritual entities – Vidar and Balder, ‘guardians of the threshold’ – whose task is to protect the spiritual border from uninitiated intruders. Building on previous reports, Encounters with Vidar offers startling new esoteric teachings, gleaned – through processes of spiritual knowledge – from these enigmatic gods. Here, Vidar and Balder emphasize the importance of clairaudience as opposed to clairvoyance (the latter particularly being open to attack from adversary beings). Through the process of working with the communications, the author begins to experience a transformation of his head chakras, leading to an awakening of ‘spiritual ears’. Whilst clairvoyance is like reading the holy script, clairaudience is akin to hearing the holy script, he learns. Amongst the wealth of fresh insights revealed here are the ‘fourth aspect of the soul’ (or ‘time-karma-Christ’); the task of eurythmy today; the whereabouts of the contents of the School of Spiritual Science; and the work of ‘Vulcan beings’ and other planetary entities. Thoresen offers reflections on his travels to western England (with its connections to Troy) and southern Spain (with its legacy of Moorish occupation). His intention is not to create new dogmas or beliefs, but to testify to the living reality of metaphysical dimensions of reality – and humanity’s latent ability to access them.

Book Raise Your GPA 1 Full Grade

Download or read book Raise Your GPA 1 Full Grade written by Edward Anhalt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-01-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success in studying isn't difficult. But one must first learn the secrets of "how to study." Why is it that every new teacher one inherits along the path to graduating high school has assumed that the teachers from the past grades have taught their students how to study? They may have taught course content, but not the way in which one learns the content. Because of this, students are working in ways that do not maximize their true potential. Raise Your GPA 1 Full Grade helps create an even playing field for all learners. The areas covered in this text are: time management, listening skills/note taking, reading for speed and comprehension, writing with a purpose, taking the fear out of examinations, how to outline, using mnemonics, and how to use resources (library, Internet, dictionary etc.) Raise Your GPA 1 Full Grade calls for no extra homework, and is as easy to use as working your way around the Monopoly board and collecting $200.00. It's nice when someone learns they can succeed!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There lived a man in the south, before Thangbrand, Wilibald's son, preached the White Christ in Iceland. He was named Eric Brighteyes, Thorgrimur's son, and in those days there was no man like him for strength, beauty and daring, for in all these things he was the first. But he was not the first in good-luck. Two women lived in the south, not far from where the Westman Islands stand above the sea. Gudruda the Fair was the name of the one, and Swanhild, called the Fatherless, Groa's daughter, was the other. They were half-sisters, and there were none like them in those days, for they were the fairest of all women, though they had nothing in common except their blood and hate. Now of Eric Brighteyes, of Gudruda the Fair and of Swanhild the Fatherless, there is a tale to tell.
