Book Our Old World Background Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Old World Background Classic Reprint written by Charles A. Beard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Old World Background This volume completes a series of books for the grade schools. The companion works are A First Book in American History and The History of the American People. Although each volume is independent in itself, a unity of purpose knits them into one organic whole. We have kept always before us the problem of giving our boys and girls the best possible civic and cultural equipment, and have endeavored to contribute something to the solution of that problem. On this point we need not add anything to what we have said in the prefaces to the companion volumes. As to this particular work, the argument for the form and subject matter is to be found in the first chapter. We have placed it there because wc believe that the pupils should know why they are called upon to take up any line of historical study. The importance of European history for the understanding of America has long been recognized by our colleges and high schools. The increase in the number of courses and books on that subject bears witness to the fact. Nevertheless, few attempts have yet been made to carry the idea into our grade schools. Book The Story of the Old World an European Background to the Story of Our Country

Download or read book The Story of the Old World an European Background to the Story of Our Country written by Henry W. Elson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Old World an European Background to the Story of Our Country All of Old-World history is the New Worlds heritage; no historian dare assert in regard to the most remote and seemingly insignificant occurrence of ancient record that it had no influence upon the course of later human events. But there are certain events connected with earlier human progress that have had a direct and easily traceable influence upon our New-World destinies; a knowledge of these is essential to a full understanding and enjoyment of the story of our country. A committee of eight eminent teachers reporting upon the study of American history in our schools, has declared that too much emphasis is placed upon the Atlantic Ocean as a barrier between the history of the New World and that of the Old. This book is written to meet that criticism. It is not a condensed general history. It is, in reality, the story of our country carried beyond and behind that wall habitually erected by earlier school historians upon the borders of the Atlantic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book examines cross-cultural encounters before 1492, focusing in particular on the major cross-cultural influences that transformed Asia and Europe during this period: the ancient silk roads that linked China with the Roman Empire, the spread of the world religions, and theMongol Empire of the thirteenth century. The author's goal throughout the work is to examine the conditions--political, social, economic, or cultural--that enable one culture to influence, mix with, or suppress another. On the basis of its global analysis, the book identifies several distinctivepattern of conversion, conflict, and compromise that emerged from cross-cultural encounters. In doing so, it elucidates that larger historical context of encounters between Europeans and other peoples in modern times. _Old World Encounters_ is ideal for students of world geography, religion, andcivilizations.
