Book excerpt: The reader will notice that we have confined ourselves in the treatment of this work almost exclusively to what is termed the "scientific method." We have not only regarded home itself as an institution of nature, but in the treatment of almost every subject we have tried to involve the exposition of some related natural law, because every relation of the home life is an outgrowth of some law of our nature or of our surroundings. It has been our aim to make this book a scientific treatise on the various phases of the home, and in this respect, so far as we know, it stands alone. - Preface

Book The Gospel Comes with a House Key

Download or read book The Gospel Comes with a House Key written by Rosaria Butterfield and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did God use to draw a radical, committed unbeliever to himself? Did God take her to an evangelistic rally? Or, since she had her doctorate in literature, did he use something in print? No, God used an invitation to dinner in a modest home, from a humble couple who lived out the gospel daily, simply, and authentically. With this story of her conversion as a backdrop, Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use this same "radical, ordinary hospitality" to bring the gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own, but as God's tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives—helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ”Children’s Literature” always draws me to a special world. In that world, I get transformed into a child. When initially I went through Kavimamani’s children’s poems in Tamil, I admired them. Entering into the exclusive world of children I recognized the wisdom hidden behind them, They are admirable humorous and arouse our admiration. While going through these poems the thought that struck me was that these poems are not only for enjoyment, but contain the art of living. Each poemteaches life’s understanding. Modern children have psychological problems.,the stress they undergo in their education both school and college due to the compulsion of the parents to get first rank and from their peers and the thrust put on them to become master in every aspect have all resulted in their violent behaviour are some of the aspects covered in the poems on ancient wisdom which are relevant for today’s circumstances was a great revelation to me. My daughter, being a young mother always shares the problems of her daughter’s upbringing. Taking cue from these poems I always tender my advice to her and I feel that this information should be shared to other mothers also who can benefit for the upbringing of their children.. Cultural degradation and forgotton traditional values are the causes for the bane in the Indian society which can be corrected through absorbing the finer points outlined in these poems. We have absorbed the lifestyle of our elders. But somewhere, we failed to impart the same tour children and insist on them to lead lives as the elders did, Hence this generation is at crossroads, more confused than ever. By reading the entire volume of Kavimamani Ilayavan’s poems a clarity dawned on me as to how the parents should bring up their wards... There is a vast change in the lifestyle of yester years and that which we live today. The parents are at the crossroads caught between tradition and modernity. These poems through sufficient light on the balance that has to be made in the upbringing of the children. Reading of the book has been a very pleasurable and delightful experience. The entire book seems to be a mirror reflection of my thoughts. When I reflect I long “Oh God! How soon I have grown up! It would have been nice to live the life of a child all over again, When I see the children pranking around me and interact with them, I am living of Kavimamani Ilayavan’s ‘Children’s Literary Poems’ and experience those precious moments.

Book excerpt: In this "captivating" crime novel (People), Texas Ranger Darren Mathews is on the hunt for a missing child -- but it's the boy's family of white supremacists who are his real target. 9-year-old Levi King knew he should have left for home sooner; now he's alone in the darkness of vast Caddo Lake, in a boat whose motor just died. A sudden noise distracts him - and all goes dark. Darren Mathews is trying to emerge from another kind of darkness; after the events of his previous investigation, his marriage is in a precarious state of re-building, and his career and reputation lie in the hands of his mother, who's never exactly had his best interests at heart. Now she holds the key to his freedom, and she's not above a little maternal blackmail to press her advantage. An unlikely possibility of rescue arrives in the form of a case down Highway 59, in a small lakeside town where the local economy thrives on nostalgia for ante-bellum Texas - and some of the era's racial attitudes still thrive as well. Levi's disappearance has links to Darren's last case, and to a wealthy businesswoman, the boy's grandmother, who seems more concerned about the fate of her business than that of her grandson. Darren has to battle centuries-old suspicions and prejudices, as well as threats that have been reignited in the current political climate, as he races to find the boy, and to save himself. Download or read book The Mammoth Book of Science Fiction written by Mike Ashley and published by Mammoth. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of writing great science fiction is that it challenges the imagination, pushing it to extreme limits and in this anthology, selecting some of the best modern science fiction from the last fifty years, twenty leading authors of the genre ask the question 'What if...?' and then give their own very personal views of the changes and surprises which may befall humanity in the centuries to come. In Ulla, Ulla Eric Brown recounts the first manned Martian expedition and discovers that H. G. Wells may have been right after all. In The Infinite Assassin Greg Egan polices the dimensions, seeking those who are taking over their alternate selves. Geoffrey A. Landis takes us into the depths of a black hole in Approaching Perimelasma. Is the ultimate Utopia heaven or hell? Robert Sheckley finds out in the classic A Ticket to Tranai. These and other stories by James White, Eric Frank Russell, Robert Reed, H. Beam Piper and H. Chandler Elliot make this one of the most entertaining and thought-provoking science fiction anthologies in lightyears.

Book Material Geographies of Household Sustainability

Download or read book Material Geographies of Household Sustainability written by Andrew Gorman-Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charting new research directions, this book constructs a series of imperatives for linking culturally informed research around household sustainability with policy and planning. The household, or 'home', is a critical scale for understanding activities that connect individual behaviours and societal attitudes. The focus on the household in this collection provides a window into the sheer diversity of homemaking and maintenance activities that entail resource use. These practices have affective or emotive dimensions as well as habitual aspects. Diversity, innovation and change at the household scale is often missed in policy approaches which assume that simplistic economic motivations drive demand and this can in turn be 'managed' through regulation or market pricing. The research challenge extends beyond describing existing unsustainable economies driving resource intensive behaviour to consider realistic options for transformations in cultural practices, material relationships and, ultimately, the political economies they sit within. Without change in these systems, government initiatives to promote ecological modernisation run the risk of simply green-washing the very economies of consumption that currently drive unsustainable practices. Social and cultural change at the household level is critical to promoting sustainability at a range of wider scales.
