Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken hearts, edgy nerves, tightened throats—our emotions grab and take hold of us. But if our emotions appear obvious to us, are they necessarily real or universal? This, of course, is what researchers in physiology and psychology assert, but they will ultimately be disappointed. Vinciane Despret sets out in this book to show how some of our emotions, precisely those we thought were a natural part of our make-up, do not exist unless they have been inscribed in our subjectivity through the mediation of culture. Emotions do not exist per se, but only within relations to others. Anthropologists and ethnologists often return from distant regions and remote islands with emotions unknown to their peers at home, and which can only be expressed in the tribal tongue they have learned. Following such discoveries, one should not be surprised to find that anger does not exist among the Uktus, and the Ikfalus have to teach fear to their children. One only has to consider the emotions of other cultures and traditions to recognize that they are human productions with wide and significant variations, like good manners. Our emotions, finally, represent the way that we see the world and try to make it our own.

Book The Alchemy of Becoming

Download or read book The Alchemy of Becoming written by Diane Fulford and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-09-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book to be experienced, not simply read. The Alchemy of Becoming series sets out a methodology that empowers you to raise your level of consciousness to levels never imagined possible. The first book and level of this process, Being of Truth, laid a foundation of authenticity and personal truth. In this second installment, Being of Love, the journey continues as you discover that love is not just a feeling or emotion but rather a powerful, life-enhancing and life-creating force. Level 1 reframed fear to trust. In Level 2, love is claimed over and beyond fear. This is transformation. Not just inspiration, but transformation to a state of higher consciousness available to us all. Einstein claimed that no problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. It is only in higher consciousness that the intractable issues of our times can be addressed. This applies equally to our individual lives be it our health, relationships, and to our sense of worth and well-being. Higher consciousness takes you from life happening to you, to life happening by you and expressed as you. The seven-stage alchemic process is the framework for transformation and while the process is universal, no two people will have the same experience. The experience is personalized to you, meaning that it is aligned to your unique vibrational makeup. This is a powerful, affirming aspect of this methodology as what is revealed to you can only be known by you. It all starts with you. Transforming yourself to be the alchemist of your own life while serving as a gateway for the change our world so desperately needs.

Book excerpt: “[Beauty Sick] will blow the top off the body image movement…provocative and necessary.” — Rebellious Magazine An award-winning psychology professor reveals how the cultural obsession with women's appearance is an epidemic that harms women's ability to get ahead and to live happy, meaningful lives, in this powerful, eye-opening work in the vein of Peggy Orenstein and Sheryl Sandberg. Today’s young women face a bewildering set of contradictions when it comes to beauty. They don’t want to be Barbie dolls but, like generations of women before them, are told they must look like them. They’re angry about the media’s treatment of women but hungrily consume the outlets that belittle them. They mock modern culture’s absurd beauty ideal and make videos exposing Photoshopping tricks, but feel pressured to emulate the same images they criticize by posing with a "skinny arm." They understand that what they see isn’t real but still download apps to airbrush their selfies. Yet these same young women are fierce fighters for the issues they care about. They are ready to fight back against their beauty-sick culture and create a different world for themselves, but they need a way forward. In Beauty Sick, Dr. Renee Engeln, whose TEDx talk on beauty sickness has received more than 250,000 views, reveals the shocking consequences of our obsession with girls’ appearance on their emotional and physical health and their wallets and ambitions, including depression, eating disorders, disruptions in cognitive processing, and lost money and time. Combining scientific studies with the voices of real women of all ages, she makes clear that to truly fulfill their potential, we must break free from cultural forces that feed destructive desires, attitudes, and words—from fat-shaming to denigrating commentary about other women. She provides inspiration and workable solutions to help girls and women overcome negative attitudes and embrace their whole selves, to transform their lives, claim the futures they deserve, and, ultimately, change their world.
