Download or read book Maywood written by Edward S. Kaminski and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally settled by Dutch farmers in the 1600s, the borough of Maywood experienced population and industrial growth in the late 1800s with the coming of the railroad. New Jersey Midland Railway, predecessor to the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad, arrived in 1872, a time when Maywood consisted mainly of farmland. Maywood was incorporated in 1894, when the railroad expanded into the Pennsylvania coalfields. The railroad provided the means for transportation of people, goods, and services, and Maywood grew measurably with it into the 20th century. Today the borough has developed into a suburb of such iconic cities as New York City, Paterson, Passaic, and Hackensack, while still retaining its character and charm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Century of Contributions to Gifted Education traces the conceptual history of the field of gifted education. Bookended by Sir Francis Galton’s Hereditary Genius published in 1869, and Sidney Marland’s report to the United States Congress in 1972, each chapter represents the life and work of a key figure in the development of the field. While the historical record of gifted education has previously been limited, A Century of Contributions to Gifted Education explores the lives of individuals who made fundamental contributions in the areas of eminence, intelligence, creativity, advocacy, policy, and curriculum. Drawing heavily on archival research and primary source documentation, expert contributors highlight the major philosophical, theoretical, and pedagogical developments in gifted education over the course of a century, providing both lively biography and scholarly analysis.

Download or read book Storied Landscapes written by Frances Swyripa and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storied Landscapes is a beautifully written, sweeping examination of the evolving identity of major ethno-religious immigrant groups in the Canadian West. Viewed through the lens of attachment to the soil and specific place, and through the eyes of both the immigrant generation and its descendants, the book compares the settlement experiences of Ukrainians, Mennonites, Icelanders, Doukhobors, Germans, Poles, Romanians, Jews, Finns, Swedes, Norwegians, and Danes. It reveals how each group’s sense of identity was shaped by a complex interplay of physical and emotional ties to land and place, and how that sense of belonging influenced, and was influenced by, relationships not only within the prairies and the Canadian nation state but also with the homeland and its extended diaspora. Through a close study of myths, symbols, commemorative traditions, and landmarks, Storied Landscapes boldly asserts the inseparability of ethnicity and religion both to defining the prairie region and to understanding the Canadian nation-building project.
