Download or read book Oughtism written by Link Bittor and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about turtles. Well, really it is a book about the theory of turtles. Although the book makes little mention of the actual turtles themselves, it acts as an allegorical tale of a turtle that has lived a long life in the desert. This turtle became very dry and dusty. It was so dehydrated that it was certain it was going to dry up completely and become nothing more than a crumbling shell on the hard desert ground. As it lay dying and dehydrated on the desert floor, a vulture came to flip it over and peck at the insides, wishing to enjoy delicious turtle soup. When the vulture swooped down to commit this act, the turtle discovered that it is in fact a tortoise. This is the tale of that vulture and how that vulture ended up saving the life of the turtle. This vulture ended up showing the turtle that there are many other turtles in the desert. And also it showed the turtle that it was in fact a dove or maybe a stork. This book is the baby.

Download or read book The Tango of Ethics written by Jonathan Leighton and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite existing for thousands of years, the field of ethics remains strongly influenced by several largely unquestioned assumptions and cognitive biases that can dramatically affect our priorities. The Tango of Ethics: Intuition, Rationality and the Prevention of Suffering proposes a deep, rigorous reassessment of how we think about ethics. Eschewing the traditional language of morality, it places a central emphasis on phenomenological experience and the unique urgency of suffering wherever it occurs, challenges our existence bias and examines the consequences of a metaphysically accurate understanding of personal identity. A key paradigm in The Tango of Ethics is the conflict and interplay between two fundamentally different ways of seeing and being in the world — that of the intuitive human being who wants to lead a meaningful life and thrive, and that of the detached, rational agent who wants to prevent unbearable suffering from occurring. Leighton aims to reconcile these two stances or motivations within a more holistic framework he labels 'xNU+' that places them at distinct ethical levels. This approach avoids some of the flaws of classical utilitarianism, including the notion that extreme suffering can be formally balanced out by enough bliss, while maintaining a focus on impact. He also identifies some of the limits of rationality and our dependence on intuitions to make ethical decisions. The book explores the implications of this way of thinking for real-world ethical dilemmas and how we might incorporate it into governance. With societal collapse, increasing totalitarianism and artificial general intelligence all very real threats in the coming years, Leighton argues that it is as important as ever to promote these ethics and their implementation while there is still an opportunity for some convergence around what matters.

Download or read book The BUS route to Happiness written by Glenn Herbert and published by Glenn Herbert. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the advice I've read, mainly on the bus, on how to become a bit happier, calmer, kinder, and wiser, and how to get a slightly different perspective on life. I'm aiming this advice mostly at my children, and I've written this book with them in mind... but it’s helpful for anyone! I cover the wisdom of the Taoists, Zen Buddhists and Stoics and then some modern psychology, before I move on to some practical advice to increase your happiness based on the philosophies, books and articles that I’ve read. The BUS route is an abbreviation of: be here now, understanding empathy and compassion, and shrink desires. The book title is a happy coincidence, isn’t it? Throughout history we’ve had to deal with fear, anxiety, dissatisfaction, uncertainty, stress and lack of control. Our age is no different. I offer ways to cope, which includes: being more aware of life in the present moment, being more compassionate to yourself and others, looking at things more positively or realistically, looking at the big picture, and finding ways to manage your wants. This is a light-hearted look at how to be a little happier on the metaphorical bus journey of life, no matter what bumps in the road you’ll find.

Download or read book Resourcing Mission written by Helen Cameron and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a lively debate about the mission of the local church and an interest in doing new things or doing things differently. However, when church leaders start to work out the implications of change, they immediately come across real issues such as the time, money and buildings needed and how to make decisions that will change things, yet keep most people on board. "Resourcing Mission" offers the missing link between missiological thinking and the practical theological thinking about the task of mobilising local churches. Helen Cameron discusses questions such as the use of available time and money, different models of income, different models of leadership, the use of buildings, changing patterns of risk and regulation and approaches to decision making. "Resourcing Mission" shows how practical theology and mission and ministry need to work together and draw on each other's resources to strengthen the work of the church.
