Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Revision of the Confession of Faith If anything were needed to vindicate the foregoing ex position of the meaning of the overture, it would be sup plied by the brief debate that was held in the Assembly upon its adoption. It was adopted just in this form on the distinct ground that it was a colorless inquiry into the will of the presbyteries, and did not propose either revision or no revision to them; and so little was it thought to con cern the substance of any doctrine that the moderator ruled that the introduction of doctrinal discussion into the debate concerning it was out of order. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Shall We Revise the Westminster Confession of Faith?: A Bundle of Papers There seems to be an increasing interest in the ques tion of the Revision of the Westminster Confession of Faith. Many papers and numerous pamphlets have been published relating to this subject. The first question to be determined is whether there is to be a revision at all. This question seems to have been decided already by the Christian public, and by the votes of the presbyteries of the Presbyterian Church, in favor of Revision. It mat ters little how great the majority for Revision may be, the Revision movement has already succeeded. The next question that arises is, How shall we revise the West minster Confession? There is little agreement at this point among revisionists. It is important that this ques tion should now receive some attention. This question is the theme of the Bundle of Papers that is now presented to the public in this volume. These papers were prepared by men of kindred spirit. Some of them have been pub Iished in other forms in the periodical literature of the day. Others were delivered in debate on the floors of presbyteries. These have been revised by their authors for this volume. But at least one-half of the material was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confession of Faith With the Scripture Proofs: Introductory Preface The aim herein is primarily and chiefly to prepare a hand-book of doctrine for those who are interested in the teachings of the Presby terian Churc'h; but' incidentally it is desired also (1) to call attention to the_ fullness and value of the creed-material contained in the Confession of Faith and the Larger Catechism; (2) to advocate the combination of all this' material in one full creed, rather than the formation of a new and Shorter creed; (3) to commend the Apostles' Creed as the confessional creed for all churches, and as containing the order of thought which all Creeds should follow; 4) to suggest a few amendments to our creed In order to bring out more clearly its evangelical character; and (5) to suggest the recon struction of all creeds upon the basis of the great commission and the Apostles' Creed as a step toward unity and union. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confession of Faith: Hand Books for Bible Classes and Private Students In the previous section we noticed how latitudinarians in doctrine, disliking the exactness Of confessional utterances, make an illegiti mate appeal from the Confession to Scripture, thinking to find ap parent support for their views in a partial presentation of scriptural expressions. To maintain the view, however, just indicated in re gard to the interpretation of a subscribed creed is, when rightly understood, not only not latitudinarian, but genuinely conservative. It is the conservation of the essential principles embalmed in the Confession. This implies the genuine spiritual appreciation of those principles, the hearty adoption of those doctrines as our own deepest spiritual convictions. Dr. Cunningham has clearly expressed this position of true liberalism, which distinguishes the fundamental from the occasional, that which belongs to the explanation or presentation of a doctrine from the doctrine itself. Towards the close of his essay on Calvin and Beza In which he had been showing at length the theological developments of the latter divine, Dr. Cunningham maintains that, while he considers those additional determinations of Beza to be strictly in accordance with Scripture truth, and fair logical deductions from the principles laid down by Calvin, it would nevertheless be inexpedient that those precise and definite expressions should find a place in symbolical books, or be made a term of com munion. The individual Christian is required to make diligent search in order to acquire all truth attainable in regard to details as well as to general principles; but the Church must only formulate those statements of truth to which the many individuals belonging to her community may yield assent, and in regard to which unity of belief may be expected and claimed. One who goes with Calvin might refuse to go with Beza. No formulary should occasion divisions of such a kind. 'calvin probably would have made a difficulty about adopting precise and definite deliverances on some points, concerning the truth of which the great Calvinistic divines of the seventeenth century had no hesitation. But it will probably be admitted that he was qualified for the office of a minister in a Calvinistic church, even in this advanced nineteenth century.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Confession of Faith: With Questions for Theological Students and Bible Classes Dr. Mitchell proves that the Confession was conformed in the order of its chapters and the type Of its doctrine more to the Articles of the Irish Church than to any other model. These were drawn up by Archbishop Ussher in 1615, when he was pro fessor of divinity in Trinity College, Dublin. The correspond ence of the Larger Catechism is also very striking with the Body of Christian Doctrine, a compilation attributed to Ussher when a youth, and circulated in the Westminster Assembly. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Comment on the Confession of Faith of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ The United Brethren in Christ have always been Arminian in their faith, as contradistinguished from Calvinistic. The Confession of Faith had been arranged, rather than compiled, by Otterbein and those who followed him, a century ago. In form and style it resembled the Apostles' Creed; and this creed was no doubt drawn on largely for the matter composing the creed of this Church. However, the Church did not confine itself very closely to this written creed. At an early day the General Conference inserted in the Book of Discipline, not an article of faith, but a command, based on the Word of God and on the known faith of the Church, requiring the people to keep the Sabbath day holy, and explaining how this should be done. So, in the early years of the Church, the General Conference inserted, in the form of questions to be asked candidates for the ministry, both as licentiates and as elders, all the doctrines peculiar to Protestant evangelical churches; such as, depravity, regeneration, adoption, justification, sanctification, the inspiration of the Holy Scriptures, the divine call to the ministry, future eternal rewards and punishments, etc. These were asked of every candidate. If he avowed his disapproval of any of these doctrines, he was rejected by the Conference as not being a suitable man to preach in this Church. If received, he was given a course of study, extending over a period of three years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
