Despite being home to the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia exists on the periphery of an Islamic world centered around the Arabian Peninsula. Mirjam Lücking approaches the problem of interpreting the current conservative turn in Indonesian Islam by considering the ways personal relationships, public discourse, and matters of religious self-understanding guide two groups of Indonesians who actually travel to the Arabian Peninsula—labor migrants and Mecca pilgrims—in becoming physically mobile and making their mobility meaningful. This concept, which Lücking calls "guided mobility," reveals that changes in Indonesian Islamic traditions are grounded in domestic social constellations and calls claims of outward Arab influence in Indonesia into question. With three levels of comparison (urban and rural areas, Madura and Central Java, and migrants and pilgrims), this ethnographic case study foregrounds how different regional and socioeconomic contexts determine Indonesians' various engagements with the Arab world.

The content of this book is based on research that has been conducted during doctoral study at Deakin University, Australia and the study aimed is to elucidate the relationship between happiness and religiosity as experienced and understood by a group of 12 young people studying at a large public Islamic university in Jakarta. Interviews with the participants about their understanding of religion and conceptualization of happiness were analyzed using Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological approach to elucidate the meaning of happiness and religion in young Muslims. The findings show that there were differences in how the participants described their happiness, that a range of factors affected their happiness and influenced their ability to cope with stress. While many of the participants had some of the same ideas about religion and its relationship to happiness that are common in Indonesia in general, religion was not a significant factor in their happiness, nor was it the direct support for them in coping with stress. In this, the study suggests that Indonesia's widespread assumption that religion is the most significant source of resilience and coping may not apply to younger individuals who typically have many more choices than may have been available in the past. Describing and give meaning to Religiosity and Happiness and how that two terms can be connected in some ways is not an easy path. It is long-life learning indeed. Book excerpt: How can a developing, democratic and predominantly Muslim country like Indonesia manage its foreign relations, while facing a myriad of security concerns and dilemmas in the increasingly complex post-Cold War international politics, without compromising its national interests and sacrificing its independence? Approaching this problem from the vantage point of the Indonesian foreign policy elite, this book explores the elite's perceptions about other states and the manner in which these shape the decision-making process and determine policy outcomes. The combined qualitative and quantitative research strategy draws on a unique series of in-depth interviews with 45 members of the Indonesian foreign policy elite that included the country's (present and/or former) presidents, cabinet ministers, high-ranking military officers, and senior diplomats. Among all state actors, Indonesian relations with the United States and China are the highest concern of the elite. The leaders believe that, in the future, Indonesia will increasingly have to manoeuvre between the two rival powers. While the United States during George W. Bush's presidency was seen as the main security threat to Indonesia, China is considered the main malign factor in the long run with power capabilities that need to be constrained and counter-balanced.

What has become clear from these discussions is that nuanced understandings of diversity are desirable and obtainable through a focus on how this diversity has come about and the role of nation-states in the diversification of social life. In Language and Superdiversity, Zane Goebel explores how diversity has been managed in Indonesia since Dutch colonial times and how these practices have produced more diversity. Taking Inspiration from contemporary linguistic anthropological thought, Goebel explains how ethnolinguistic identity in Indonesia has been constituted, reproduced, and valued over the longue durée, and how bits of these identities are used in everyday talk amongst Indonesians living in Japan, Using a wide range of data, he demonstrates how and why management practices have produced hundreds of ethnolinguistic groups in Indonesia, while Increasing Indonesia's diversity in other ways. For transnational Indonesians living in Japan, earlier participation in these management practices has enabled them to draw upon their knowledge of other ethnolinguistic groups to pull off situated identity work in everyday talk.
