Download or read book Europe in Motion written by Maurizio Bach and published by edition sigma. This book was released on 2006 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

The following themes have been examined most closely: perspectives of European political cooperation, development of European legal standards, European economic integration, fighting poverty in the European Union and the free movement of people within the European Union and creation of European local initiatives. The authors also attempt to discuss the question of how the generally positive evaluation of the European Union enlargement reflects the political, legal, economic and social reality in Europe.
Download or read book Trade Unions from Post Socialist Member States in EU Governance written by Heiko Pleines and published by ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central question addressed by the papers collected in this book is whether trade unions from the post-socialist states have successfully represented their interests at the EU level. At issue is not only their purely formal integration into umbrella organizations and EU bodies; of much greater concern is their actual participation in political decision-making processes and the resulting impact at the national and sub-national level. The book therefore examines the integration and Europeanisation of a vital part of those societies which joined the EU in 2004. The empirical focus is on case studies from the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. The book is based on the research project ‘Already arrived in Brussels? Interest representation of trade unions from the new EU member states at the EU level’, which was – with financial support from the Otto Brenner Foundation – carried out under the guidance of the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen.
Download or read book Language and Social Change in Central Europe written by Patrick Stevenson and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamics of language and social change in central Europe in the context of the end of the Cold War and eastern expansion of the European Union. One outcome of the profound social transformations in central Europe since the Second World War has been the reshaping of the relationship between particular languages and linguistic varieties, especially between 'national' languages and regional or ethnic minority languages. Previous studies have investigated these transformed relationships from the macro perspective of language policies, while others have taken more fine-grained approaches to individual experiences with language. Combining these two perspectives for the first time--and focusing on the German language, which has a uniquely complex and problematic history in the region--the authors offer an understanding of the complex constellation of language politics in central Europe. Stevenson and Carl's analysis draws on a range of theoretical, conceptual and analytical approaches - language ideologies, language policy, positioning theory, discourse analysis, narrative analysis and life histories - and a wide range of data sources, from European and national language policies to individual language biographies. The authors demonstrate how the relationship between German and other languages has played a crucial role in the politics of language and processes of identity formation in the recent history of central Europe.

Download or read book The European Social Model under Pressure written by Romana Careja and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Social Model is at a crossroad. Although from the 1990s onwards, the threat of an imminent crisis shaped much of the rhetoric surrounding the future of the welfare state, disagreement within the academic community remains. What is however increasingly clear is that with the global financial crisis and the Euro crisis that followed it, the challenges the European Social Model faces have become more acute and demand action. This volume launches a multifaceted inquiry into these challenges. Each contribution, written by renowned scholars in their fields, represents an in-depth exploration of issues that cut to the core of current political, economic and social processes. They are an invitation to the seasoned scholars as well as to the beginning students of social sciences, public administration or journalism to engage with, by now, a large body of scholarship, to accompany the authors in their endeavours to seek an explanation to burning questions and start their own inquiries.

Download or read book Widening the European Union written by Bernard Steunenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed enlargement of the European Union to include countries from Central and Eastern Europe has become an important political issue. Widening the European Union focuses on those institutional reforms of the Union that may be necessary to make the enlargement possible. The institutional structure, originally designed for the Union of just six states, might not be suitable for a EU of twenty-seven or more member states. An overview of current rational choice theories of institutional change is provided before the volume focuses on several aspects of institutional reforms in the Union. Widening the European Union contains contributions from a distinguished team of European academics. This book is a valuable resource to students of the European Union with an interest in its politics and policy, enlargement and institutional reform.
