Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional, secular, and fundamentalist—all three categories are contested, yet in their contestation they shape our sensibilities and are mutually implicated, the one with the others. This interplay brings to the foreground more than ever the question of what it means to think and live as Tradition. The Orthodox theologians of the twentieth century, in particular, have emphasized Tradition not as a dead letter but as a living presence of the Holy Spirit. But how can we discern Tradition as living discernment from fundamentalism? What does it mean to live in Tradition when surrounded by something like the “secular”? These essays interrogate these mutual implications, beginning from the understanding that whatever secular or fundamentalist may mean, they are not Tradition, which is historical, particularistic, in motion, ambiguous and pluralistic, but simultaneously not relativistic. Contributors: R. Scott Appleby, Nikolaos Asproulis, Brandon Gallaher, Paul J. Griffiths, Vigen Guroian, Dellas Oliver Herbel, Edith M. Humphrey, Slavica Jakelić, Nadieszda Kizenko, Wendy Mayer, Brenna Moore, Graham Ward, Darlene Fozard Weaver

Book Orthodox Christians and Islam in the Postmodern Age

Download or read book Orthodox Christians and Islam in the Postmodern Age written by Andrew Sharp and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-06-27 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patristic, ecclesiological, and liturgical revival in the Orthodox Church has had a profound impact on world Orthodoxy and the ecumenical movement. Orthodox leaders have also contributed to the movement’s efforts in inter-religious dialogue, especially with Muslims. Yet this book is the first comprehensive attempt to assess an Orthodox ‘position’ on Islam. It explains why, despite being neighbors for centuries, relations between Orthodox Christians and Muslims have become increasingly complex as internal and external forces challenge their ability to understand each other and live in peace. It demonstrates how a growing number of Orthodox scholars and leaders have reframed the discussion on Islam, while endorsing and participating in dialogue with Muslims. It shows how a positive relationship with Muslims (and Islam in a general sense) is an essential aspect of Orthodox Christians’ historical past, present identity, and future aspirations.

Book excerpt: BATTLE FOR ORTHODOXY Traditionally, American Fundamentalism has been placed in the 1920s. Battle for Orthodoxy shows that American Fundamentalism occurred much earlier. This God honoring work places the origin of Fundamentalism in its proper historical setting. It honors the saints of the past who upheld the historic Christian faith. American religious Liberalism is developed as well within the Battle for Orthodoxy. The variables of Darwinism and the New Theology have been answered for the sake of American intellectual religious history. Battle for Orthodoxy is not a series of philosophical reflections without a historic chronology. The work is written using the historical method. The fluidity of history and the essence of American fundamentalism is defined and maintained. The work defines American Fundamentalism and provides a contrast by the development of American religious Liberalism during the same period from 1870 to 1910. THE AUTHOR Norm Mathers earned his Master of Theology degree at Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Texas. He holds a Master of Arts from California State University, Dominquez Hills, California. His Ph.D. was earned at the University of Pretoria in theology. Dr. Mathers is Assistant Professor for Liberty University in the School of Divinity. He is an adjunct professor in Religion and Philosophy program at Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina.

Simpson focuses on the cultural transformation in early modern England that allowed common people to read the Bible for the first time. The last wave of fundamentalist reading in the West provoked 150 years of violent upheaval; as we approach a second wave, this powerful book alerts us to our peril.

Book Fundamentalism in America

Download or read book Fundamentalism in America written by Philip Melling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book challenges the idea that religious fundamentalism can adequately be understood as a paranoid, xenophobic faith. It demonstrates instead how it draws upon a long tradition of evangelical and millenialist scripture in its engagement with issues at the spiritual and ethical core of postmodernity in the United States. The author examines the varieties of fundamentalism as they appear in prophecy, sermon, film and fiction. In its wide-ranging consideration of the rhetoric of the New World Order, the literature of prophecy, Cold War films, television evangelism, cross-border texts, and post-nationalist writing, Fundamentalism in America provides a vital and compelling account of the present state of religious and nationality identity in the United States.

  • Pages : 414 pages

Download or read book Always Reforming written by Craig D. Atwood and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Always Reforming highlights the fact that in the modern era the notion of heresy has fallen apart. Every church has been declared heretical at some time or other by another church, and it is not the role of the historian to decide who is right or wrong on doctrinal issues. Christians have adapted to sweeping social changes, including scientific discoveries and changing world-views." "This volume attempts to uncover some of the hidden dynamics of faith within the many ways in which other Christians have tried to live out the gospel in an uncertain world. It also demonstrates that all human institutions, including churches, change over time."--Jacket.

Book Freeing God from Religion

Download or read book Freeing God from Religion written by Clifford Ratzlaff and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-27 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you tend to shake your head when you read religious literature, please read this book. I invite being disagreed with; I welcome debate and do not object to being told I am wrong. The question remains: Who has the right religion? Despite being an octogenarian when presumably all should be settled and nailed down, I now challenge the theology I nodded to so vigorously in a previous time of my life. What I once assumed as truth is now open to the kind of tough scrutiny I had never dared engage in. My theological life scripts were deeply rooted and beyond challenge. Born and raised in a fundamentalist Mennonite conservative evangelical community, doubting and questioning were considered acts of sin. Even though we were good ethical people, we were repaganized every year by visiting English speaking evangelists and getting saved was an annual event. I know; I did it three times before I was fifteen. I include a simple caveat. Once you start critiquing and investigating your beliefs, even the most cherished, you will find that you cannot go back. The very act of questioning intensifies the importance of the question. Millions of books exist about God; every book written by a human being (mostly men). Over twenty five miles of shelves with books about God are in the archives under the Vatican. I had fifteen shelves with many books that talk about God.

Book The Seraphinians Blessed Seraphim Rose and His Axe Wielding Western Converts

Download or read book The Seraphinians Blessed Seraphim Rose and His Axe Wielding Western Converts written by C. J. S. Hayward and published by Major Works. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gentle Reader; Q: How many admirers of "Blessed Seraphim Rose" does it take to perform a fair, impartial, honest, and accurate scientific study of the age of the universe? A: No one knows. (It's never been tried!) In retrospect, and after years and a very slight new revision, this is a book about possible "half-converted" status among Fr. Seraphim (Rose) of Plantina, a possible "half-converted status" that may bleed into his following. The author once put a hand on a dear friend's shoulder and said, "It's been a while since I spent some quality time criticizing you. What's your favorite way of being criticized?" And indeed, most people don't like to be critiqued. Numerous fans of Fr. Seraphim have given one-star reviews to this title, which especially given their social dynamic is to be expected if this book is wrong, and almost equally to be expected if it is right. As regards the reviews, this is the only work written by author where a reviewer has publicly cast doubt on whether he was sober when he wrote it. (The reader is invited to search for other titles by "C.J.S. Hayward" most have higher ratings, and even the ones with lower ratings do not have such insults in reviews.) Come to think of it, the author's knowledge of Amazon reviews overall is limited, but he does not recall this kind of hostile response to any other work by any other author in any review he is read.) The "Full of logical fallacies--be warned!" review is somewhat difficult to answer as the alleged fallacies are identified briefly at best, but receptive readers might consider: First, the author has a first master's from UIUC straddling math and computers, including postgraduate coursework in logic, and seriously considered getting a logic PhD. Second, the author has a second master's from Cambridge University straddling theology and philosophy, including a dissertation on fallacies in certain kinds of theology. (He knows logic, and also knows its limits.) Third, the author has tried at length to document a behavior problem that leaves him concerned. ("Just the facts, Ma'am.") This seems to be classified by Fr. Seraphim's followers as a logical fallacy ("thinly veiled ad hominems"). But the text doesn't really say, "These documented acts shows the Seraphinian beliefs to be false;" it just details facts of a sort that the Orthodox Church has traditionally weighed when it tries to assess a particular camp. (If the Orthodox Church does not always observe Aristotelian rules of logic, that is not for you to judge.) It's not an ad hominem, thinly veiled or otherwise: it is an attempt to supply facts and numerous verbatim quotations to document a consistent and repeated behavior pattern. Recounting a precise fact that you happen to find painful, or a great many such facts, does not in itself constitute an ad hominem argument, or any other kind of logical fallacy. (The author apologizes in advance to the better-catechized Orthodox readers who may wince at his speaking on the Western, heterodox terms of the "opinion-fact" schema essentially unaltered.) The author does not deny the probable presence of fallacies and errors in his corpus at points; however, it is interesting that it is the one, out of dozens of his titles, where readers allege fallacies and apparently quite a few of them. (It is possible that some of the criticisms in this book hit home among Fr. Seraphim's devotees.) If you are a loyal fan of Fr. Seraphim, you're welcome to read this, but expect to need to find serious fault with the work. If you are Orthodox and have been uncomfortable or concerned with the "Blessed Seraphim Rose and Elder Ephraim" crowd, and especially if you want to put a finger on why but can't pin it down, this book is very much written just for you. Cordially, C.J.S. Hayward

Book The Challenge of Fundamentalism

Download or read book The Challenge of Fundamentalism written by Bassam Tibi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Islamic fundamentalism was exerting a significant influence in nearly every corner of the world. Bassam Tibi, a widely recognized expert on Islam and Arab culture, offers an important and disquieting analysis of this particular synthesis of religion and politics. A Muslim and descendant of a famous Damascene Islamic scholar family, Tibi sees Islamic fundamentalism as the result of Islam's confrontation with modernity and not only--as it is widely believed--economic adversity. The movement is unprecedented in Islamic history and parallels the inability of Islamic nation-states to integrate into the new world secular order. For this updated edition, Tibi has written a new preface and lengthy introduction addressing Islamic fundamentalism in light of and since September 11.

Book Fundamentalism and Women in World Religions

Download or read book Fundamentalism and Women in World Religions written by Arvind Sharma and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by internationally renowned women scholars both contests the notion of fundamentalism and attempts to find places where it might convege with women's roles in the various world's religions. The essayists explore fundamentalism as a system or method of limiting women's religious roles and examine the ways that women embrace certain aspects of fundamentalism. The essays cover Hinduism, Buddhism, Confuciansim, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. The contributors investigate the ways that women "fight back" against fundamentalist conceptions of family, gender roles, doctrinal practices, ritual practices, and God or theistic constructs. The writers reassert and preserve their identities by challenging the static categories of fundamentalism. The essays contain deep and powerful explorations of the intersections of culture, religion, and feminism.
