Book Orsch Cutting the Edge in Education

Download or read book Orsch Cutting the Edge in Education written by Jackie Burt and published by . This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orsch...Cutting the Edge in Education is Jackie Burt's hopeful message to students past, present, and future and to teachers everywhere. It is about the possibilities, not the challenges or problems. The blockades to meaningful, student-centered change have been well documented since the dawn of classical education and throughout the evolution of modern education. Burt's book makes meaningful reform seem possible and obtainable. She seeks to overcome the many barriers to effective change. Barriers include the current educational model, the way in which we organize schools, deeply rooted traditions, and ingrained biases that govern how we measure children's progress. This is where Orsch is invaluable. Orsch is at its soul an educational lab. Orsch is a breeding ground for ideas, for ideals, and for dreaming big-for seeking answers to the burning question of "What if?" Burt's experience in Orsch is well explained in her book Orsch...Cutting the Edge in Education. Her book contains practiced, low-cost, high-yield ideas and education structures that have made a difference in children's learning. She explains that in the fifth year of the lab school, the real, unfettered potential of students is being witnessed and it is rife with exciting possibilities that could change the world of education. Burt is arguably the perfect individual to write Orsch...Cutting the Edge in Education, in part because she is invested in the lab school she created, and in part because of who she is-an out-of-the-box thinker who grew up experiencing a multitude of educational paradigms, and then spent her career creating innovative educational settings. Burt has a love of teaching that is evident in her book. She shares a vigorous enthusiasm that is at once inspiring and infectious. Burt's ideas are gentle changes and simple customizations that would make such a difference to a child, to a teacher, to a community. So many education reform texts become self-absorbed and caught up in politics. Not so with Orsch...Cutting the Edge in Education. Orsch is Burt's brainchild. She created the environment. Her own children were part of her hopeful experiment. Her results have been magical and the feedback from parents and kids has been positive, and appreciative.

Book Classical Literary Criticism

Download or read book Classical Literary Criticism written by and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-02-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works collected in this volume have profoundly shaped the history of criticism in the Western world: they created much of the terminology still in use today and formulated enduring questions about the nature and function of literature. In Ion, Plato examines the god-like power of poets to evoke feelings such as pleasure or fear, yet he went on to attack this manipulation of emotions and banished poets from his ideal Republic. Aristotle defends the value of art in his Poetics, and his analysis of tragedy has influenced generations of critics from the Renaissance onwards. In the Art of Poetry, Horace promotes a style of poetic craftsmanship rooted in wisdom, ethical insight and decorum, while Longinus' On the Sublime explores the nature of inspiration in poetry and prose.

Download or read book Writings on Art and Literature written by Sigmund Freud and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite Freud's enormous influence on twentieth-century interpretations of the humanities, there has never before been in English a complete collection of his writings on art and literature. These fourteen essays cover the entire range of his work on these subjects, in chronological order beginning with his first published analysis of a work of literature, the 1907 "Delusion and Dreams in Jensen's Gradiva" and concluding with the 1940 posthumous publication of "Medusa's Head." Many of the essays included in this collection have been crucial in contemporary literary and art criticism and theory. Among the subjects Freud engages are Shakespeare's Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, King Lear, and Macbeth, Goethe's Dichtung und Wahrheit, Michelangelo's Moses, E. T. A. Hoffman's "The Sand Man," Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, fairy tales, the effect of and the meaning of beauty, mythology, and the games of aestheticization. All texts are drawn from The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud, edited by James Strachey. The volume includes the notes prepared for that edition by the editor. In addition to the writings on Jensen's Gradiva and Medusa, the essays are: "Psychopathic Characters on the Stage," "The Antithetical Meaning of Primal Words," "The Occurrence in Dreams of Material from Fairy Tales," "The Theme of the Three Caskets," "The Moses of Michelangelo," "Some Character Types Met with in Psycho-analytic Work," "On Transience," "A Mythological Parallel to a Visual Obsession," "A Childhood Recollection from Dichtung und Wahrheit," "The Uncanny," "Dostoevsky and Parricide," and "The Goethe Prize."

Book Romanesque

Download or read book Romanesque written by Rolf Toman and published by H F Ullmann. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over Europe, examples of Romanesque architecture shape our image of the Middle Ages. This volume presents the grand views of cathedrals along with fascinating details drawn from sculpture and painting. The Romanesque was the first epoch of medieval art that encompassed all of Europe. Its origins hearken back to characteristic elements of Roman construction - reflected in the name of the period - and in the course of the High Middle Ages developed into the embodiment of Christian sacred art. Architecture, painting, and sculpture were permeated with the Christian worldview and the spirit of the religion. The book at hand helps us understand and even experience this tight integration and masterfully explains the manifold aspects of Romanesque artistic composition, in which the hopes and fears of the people of the time found their expression. AUTHOR: For this work, editor Rolf Toman gathered contributions from nine renowned authors with profound expertise in the fields of architecture and art history whose competent knowledge clearly elucidates the art of the Romanesque period. SELLING POINTS: Comprehensive contributions which incorporate aspects of culture and the mentality of the times in addition to art historical information An extensive introduction to the forms and shapes of the Romanesque explains the stylistic "tools" of sacred architecture, from round arches to the most varied development of choirs or crypts A separate chapter is devoted to the pictorial realm of Romanesque sculpture Photographs taken specially for this book show the diversity of forms of Romanesque architecture over 750 illustrations

Book Marxism Revolution and Utopia

Download or read book Marxism Revolution and Utopia written by Herbert Marcuse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection assembles some of Herbert Marcuse’s most important work and presents for the first time his responses to and development of classic Marxist approaches to revolution and utopia, as well as his own theoretical and political perspectives. This sixth and final volume of Marcuse's collected papers shows Marcuse’s rejection of the prevailing twentieth-century Marxist theory and socialist practice - which he saw as inadequate for a thorough critique of Western and Soviet bureaucracy - and the development of his revolutionary thought towards a critique of the consumer society. Marcuse's later philosophical perspectives on technology, ecology, and human emancipation sat at odds with many of the classic tenets of Marx’s materialist dialectic which placed the working class as the central agent of change in capitalist societies. As the material from this volume shows, Marcuse was not only a theorist of Marxist thought and practice in the twentieth century, but also proves to be an essential thinker for understanding the neoliberal phase of capitalism and resistance in the twenty-first century. A comprehensive introduction by Douglas Kellner and Clayton Pierce places Marcuse’s philosophy in the context of his engagement with the main currents of twentieth century philosophy while also providing important analyses of his anticipatory theorization of capitalist development through a neoliberal restructuring of society. The volume concludes with an afterword by Peter Marcuse.
