Book excerpt: Clouds play a critical role in the Earth's climate, general atmospheric circulation, and global water balance. Clouds are essential elements in mesoscale meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, air pollution, atmosphericradiation, and weather forecasting, and thus must be understood by any student or researcher in the atmospheric sciences.Cloud Dynamics provides a skillful and comprehensive examination of the nature of clouds--what they look like and why, how scientists observe them, and the basic dynamics and physics that underlie them. The book describes the mechanics governing each type of cloud that occurs in Earth's atmosphere, and the organization of various types of clouds in larger weather systems such as fronts, thunderstorms, and hurricanes. This book is aimed specifically at graduate students, advanced undergraduates, practicing researchers either already in atmospheric science or moving in from a related scientific field, and operational meteorologists. Some prior knowledge of atmospheric dynamics and physics is helpful, but a thorough overview of the necessary prerequisites is supplied.Key Highlights of This TextProvides a complete treatment of clouds integrating the analysis of air motions with cloud structure, microphysics, and precipitation mechanicsDescribes and explains the basic types of clouds and cloud systems that occur in the atmosphere-fog, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrus, thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, orographically induced clouds, mesoscale convection complexes, hurricanes, fronts, and extratropical cyclonesPresents a photographic guide, presented in the first chapter, linking the examination of each type of cloud with an image to enhance visual retention and understandingSummarizes the fundamentals, both observational and theoretical, of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, cloud microphysics, and radar meteorology, allowing each type of cloud to be examined in depthIntegrates the latest field observations, numerical model simulations, and theorySupplies a theoretical treatment suitable for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Architecture of Clouds describes in a visual, poetic, and personal way how clouds are related to our everyday life and the weather. It expertly details how the art and science of clouds are interconnected with straightforward scientific explanations of the meteorological context in which clouds appear and why they form, alongside in-depth descriptions of the visual and artistic aspects of clouds. The air motion dynamics, cloud microphysics and thermodynamics discussed are written in a style accessible to all readers. The clouds showcased within the text range from placid ground fog to smoothly sculpted, stationary, mountain-wave clouds to violent clouds associated with convective storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Clouds are classified as whether they are buoyant or not, and if they are, how deep they extend through the atmosphere. An exhaustive and impressive compilation of photos taken from all over the world, including photographs taken from satellites, are featured in each chapter. Radar depictions of the inside of some clouds and storms provide a unique addition. This book provides an abundance of detail and photography that will be appreciated by scientists, students, and any reader interested in exploring beyond the aesthetics of clouds.

Book Cloud Seeding Operations in the Bishop Creek California Watershed

Download or read book Cloud Seeding Operations in the Bishop Creek California Watershed written by Ferguson Hall and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cloud seeding operations using dry ice dispensed from aircraft have been carried out by the California Electric Power Co. in the High Sierra near Bishop, Calif., since February 1948. Limited visual observations suggest that snow showers can be produced from non-precipitating orographic clouds by seeding, the snow reaching the ground at the higher elevations. Comparison of the annual runoff from the seeded watershed with that from adjacent areas for the 3 years 1948, 1949, and 1950 showed a positive departure in the 1948-49 season significant at the 1 percent level. Significant departures did not appear during the other two years, but the average for the 3 years was significant at the 5 percent level. From the same analysis it might be estimated that the average annual flow during the 3-year period was augmented by 9 percent, with 90 percent confidence limits being zero and 18 percent. On the other hand the unusual circulation prevailing during the 1948-49 winter may have been responsible, at least in part, for the departure in flow during the season. Snow pack comparison did not indicate a significant increase in the Bishop area, but it is shown that such a result is not incompatible with the possibility that additional precipitation was produced which was not reflected in the snow surveys.

Book Human Impacts on Weather and Climate

Download or read book Human Impacts on Weather and Climate written by William R. Cotton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2007 edition of Human Impacts on Weather and Climate examines the scientific and political debates surrounding anthropogenic impacts on the Earth's climate and presents the most recent theories, data and modeling studies. The book discusses the concepts behind deliberate human attempts to modify the weather through cloud seeding, as well as inadvertent modification of weather and climate on the regional scale. The natural variability of weather and climate greatly complicates our ability to determine a clear cause-and-effect relationship to human activity. The authors describe the basic theories and critique them in simple and accessible terms. This fully revised edition will be a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate courses in atmospheric and environmental science, and will also appeal to policy makers and general readers interested in how humans are affecting the global climate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the dynamics of clouds and of precipitating mesoscale meteorological systems. Clouds and precipitating mesoscale systems represent some of the most important and scientifically exciting weather systems in the world. These are the systems that produce torrential rains, severe winds including downburst and tornadoes, hail, thunder and lightning, and major snow storms. Forecasting such storms represents a major challenge since they are too small to be adequately resolved by conventional observing networks and numerical prediction models.Key Features* Key Highlights of This Text* Provides a complete treatment of clouds integrating the analysis of air motions with cloud structure, microphysics, and precipitation mechanics* Describes and explains the basic types of clouds and cloud systems that occur in the atmosphere-fog, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrus, thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, orographically induced clouds, mesoscale convection complexes, hurricanes, fronts, and extratropical cyclones* Presents a photographic guide, presented in the first chapter, linking the examination of each type of cloud with an image to enhance visual retention and understanding* Summarizes the fundamentals, both observational and theoretical, of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, cloud microphysics, and radar meteorology, allowing each type of cloud to be examined in depth* Integrates the latest field observations, numerical model simulations, and theory* Supplies a theoretical treatment suitable for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level
