Book Orissa And Her Remains Ancient And Medieval Puri District

Download or read book Orissa And Her Remains Ancient And Medieval Puri District written by Ganguly Mono Mohon and published by Gyan Books. This book was released on 1986-08-01 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orissa, one of the ancient most seats of Indian civilization, abounds in temples and sculptures of very high artistic value. A careful examination of the monuments found in that region will convince anybody that the Aryan style in its purest form was prevalent there only in the whole of India. No apology is therefore needed to study the architectural remains of Orissa, which the learned author has done in the present volume. The author has, besides describing quite a few architectural remains in the Puri District in Orissa, tried to give a scientific exposition of the principles of architecture and sculpture obtaining there. Though he has raised many points of controversial nature, he spared no pains to illustrate his opinions by concrete examples. In the second chapter of the book, a brief outline of the political history of the political history of the province has been furnished, with which its architectural history is intimately connected. The principles of Aryan architecture and sculpture have been illustrated in the fifth and the sixth chapters while they have been illustrated in the last three chapters. Chapter V deals with the main features and the subsidiary parts of Orissan temples and the relative potions of different sections in the general ground plan. In subsequent chapters, the author has put forward formulas for the ratio of the height of the Vimana to the length of the base and of the thickness of the walls relative to the height and proportion of the edifice to be raised, the plinth pedestal, wall construction and bonds; the author has also made useful observations on the deities represented in the temples of the Saivas, Vaisnavas and Souras. Briefly, the work is a valuable contribution to the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cult of Jagannatha: Myths and Rituals offers a new approach to Orissan ethnography. In sharp contrast with dominant explanations, centred on tribal influences and the history of aryan-isation, this book provides extensive evidence on the importance of religious orthodoxy. The transition from the coastal to the inland regions of Orissa is characterised by sharp demographic and sociological discontinuities. Such regional differences are probably a reflection of aryan-isation. Ethnological accounts have most commonly relied on the historical reconstruction of this process. It has been assumed that native communities exercised a decisive influence on the traditions that flourished in the delta plain, especially those related to its vital centres-the city of Puri and the temple of Jagannatha. Myths and rituals show that sacrificial symbolism is at the core of Puri's religious system. Explicitly associated with an inaugural asvamedha (the Vedic horse sacrifice), the building of the great temple is still seen as a transformation of the brick-fire altar. These correlations are further supported by an impressive web of orthodox representations, both Vedic and Hindu. This acknowledgement of orthodoxy takes us back to the so-called singularities of local traditions. How to interpret the iconographic "specificity" of Puri's deities? What status should be attributed to the Sudra ritualists of the great temple? The present book provides new answers to these old questions. Puzzling as it may appear, the "strangeness" of Orissan ethnography is a particular, yet extremely coherent expression of Indian traditions.

Book Are You Listening Prime Minister

Download or read book Are You Listening Prime Minister written by Sridhar Subramaniam and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, ARE YOU LISTENING, PRIME MINISTER ? A Coffee Table Analyst’s Perspective on India’s Development and Development Objectives, the author gives his insights and perspectives about the realities in India today. He is of the opinion that India is at the cusp of the great leap forward and if it can get its act together then it is poised for exciting times ahead. India has to grapple with a lot of challenges and has to address them and surge forward and it has to do this, in the shortest possible time, otherwise the initiative will slip out of its hands. He is of the view that there has to be attitudinal shift in the way we see problems and there has to be a sense of urgency in fixing issues which have been troubling the country for a long time now. India also has to find unique homespun and innovative solutions to some of its unique problems which are peculiar to it. Also it can adopt some of the success models which have been tried and tested and proved successful in other countries. It is not as though these challenges and problems are insurmountable and that the solutions are beyond our imagination. It only needs our collective will, a far sighted vision and a consciously cultivated ‘problem solving’ mindset. In terms of the economy, India has been growing steadily and is one of the fastest growing emerging economies. The mood is buoyant and spearheaded by its heady success in the IT sector, the other sectors are also raring to go. India has a lot going for it and with favourable demographics it can reap the demographic dividend. However, the author is of the opinion that unbridled population without any curbs will prove to be the country’s undoing as already it is exerting tremendous pressure on the infrastructure and the other meager resources and is causing environmental degradation. His contention is that India’s political apparatus has really not served the country well and the political culture has degenerated from bad to worse with a lot of discrepancies creeping in the political process. Unless these anomalies are addressed it could sabotage the country’s development process and be a spoke in the wheel. However he has tremendous faith in the people of the country and he is of the view that these hiccups could be addressed looking straight in the eye and the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of people coupled with their enthusiasm will eventually see it through. The need of the hour is an epochal vision and a statesmanlike stewardship which can inspire the nation to reach great heights. A born again India, once more, has to have a tryst with its destiny !
