Book excerpt: In the remote past, evidence was left behind, documented, written down, painted on cave walls and in paintings throughout time. Evidence that was ignored by the mainstream academics. Some would see this evidence and ask about it, only to be ridiculed for it. Let me put this idea into perspective for you. Socrates, a philosopher of great stature even to this day, was forced to drink poison and take his own life because he openly said that the earth was not flat! It was and had to be round! He was put to death for this way of thinking, let alone outright saying it. So you see, it is not just something so small as to say aliens are real at any time in history on this planet! One could be put to death for much less. The motto of most military pilots, some commercial to this day, is If you talk about UFOs or say UFO, the only thing you will be flying is a desk! So this, as you can see, has kept many people from saying anything. In fact, if you asked the average American in 1975 if they believed in UFOs, the percent was 10 percent. It has taken until now in 2016 to get that number up to 58 percent, in large part thanks to the men and women that have dedicated there lives to this cause. Do you believe in aliens or not? I ask this to everyone. What if it is true? What if it all was true? What if aliens did come to Earth? What if they are still here? What if a couple of people stumbled on it?

The Orion Zone explores this ground-sky relationship and its astounding global significance. Book excerpt: On a post-nuclear Earth, visionaries who dream of reaching for the stars attempt to revive the forbidden technology that destroyed their world. Centuries ago, humankind was nearly destroyed in a nuclear apocalypse. Many generations have passed since that terrible time, and the remnants of civilization have re-formed into separate, vastly different societies. The dominant culture of a widely diminished Earth, the ecologically sensitive Maurai hold fast to their belief that “non-green” science is an unacceptable evil. But the reborn dream of space flight harbored by a forward-thinking few could herald the revival of the nuclear technology that once ravaged the planet and its people—and the powerful Maurai Federation will take every step necessary, no matter how drastic, to prevent doomsday from dawning again. An enthralling work of speculative fiction from a winner of the Nebula and Hugo Awards, Orion Shall Rise is a feat of world-building and a sobering view of tomorrow by one of the twentieth century’s most revered science fiction masters. Poul Anderson’s monumental tale combines science, anthropology, philosophy, and global politics with breathtaking action and adventure, offering an ingeniously unique and provocative vision of humankind’s all-too-possible destiny. This ebook includes the bonus story “The Sky People.”

Book excerpt: When a beautiful teen with polio enters their lives, a girl and her older brother find themselves drawn into a web of lies in this compelling novel by a best-selling author. (Age 10 and up) Eleven-year-old Georgie loves science-fiction movies, but she won’t be going to the theater anytime soon. It’s a hot Indiana summer in 1952, and public places from pools to camps are closing to slow the spread of polio. Despite all the headlines, Georgie never thought she’d come as close to the fearful disease as she does when she spies a silver glint in her neighbor’s yard. There she discovers a monstrous, hissing machine, and inside is Phyllis, a girl encased in an iron lung. "I have eighty-seven cubic centimeters of air, but you have the world," Phyllis tells her. Phyllis’s ability to breathe may be limited, but her strength to manipulate is boundless. As Georgie struggles to comprehend this once-gorgeous teenager’s life in a "coffin with legs," Phyllis slowly weaves a web of lies that snare all those around her, including Georgie’s quickly smitten brother. Can Georgie untangle the truth before Phyllis’s deception achieves its inevitable end?

Book Phaenomena

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aratus (Solensis.)
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2010-07
  • ISBN : 0801894654
  • Pages : 107 pages

Download or read book Phaenomena written by Aratus (Solensis.) and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Iliad and the Odyssey, the Phaenomena was the most widely read poem in the ancient world. Its fame was immediate. It was translated into Latin by Ovid and Cicero and quoted by St. Paul in the New Testament, and it was one of the few Greek poems translated into Arabic. Aratus’ Phaenomena is a didactic poem—a practical manual in verse that teaches the reader to identify constellations and predict weather. The poem also explains the relationship between celestial phenomena and such human affairs as agriculture and navigation. Despite the historical and pedagogical importance of the poem, no English edition suitable for students and general readers has been available for decades. Aaron Poochigian’s lively translation makes accessible one of the most influential poets of antiquity. Poochigian's interpretation of the Phaenomena reestablishes the ancient link between poetry and science and demonstrates that verse is an effective medium for instruction. Featuring references to Classical mythology and science, star charts of the northern and southern skies, extensive notes, and an introduction to the work’s stylistic features and literary reception, this dynamic work will appeal to students of Ancient Greece who want to deepen their understanding of the Classical world.

Book Brewed in Japan

Download or read book Brewed in Japan written by Jeffrey W. Alexander and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the earliest attempts to brew beer to the recent popularity of local craft brews, Brewed in Japan presents the first English-language exploration of beer's steady rise to become the "beverage of the masses." Alexander underscores the highly receptive nature of Japanese consumers, who adopted and domesticated beer in just a few generations, despite its entirely foreign origins. He also sheds light on the various social, cultural, and financial influences that combined to make beer Japan's leading alcoholic beverage by the 1960s. Japan's beer market is now among the most complex on earth, and it continues to evolve. Visit the author's website at www.brewedinjapan.com.
