Book Quantum Puzzle The Critique Of Quantum Theory And Electrodynamics

Download or read book Quantum Puzzle The Critique Of Quantum Theory And Electrodynamics written by Barry R Clarke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, James Clerk-Maxwell published Part II of his four-part series 'On physical lines of force'. In it, he attempted to construct a vortex model of the magnetic field but after much effort neither he, nor other late nineteenth century physicists who followed him, managed to produce a workable theory. What survived from these attempts were Maxwell's four equations of electrodynamics together with the Lorentz force law, formulae that made no attempt to describe an underlying reality but stood only as a mathematical description of the observed phenomena. When the quantum of action was introduced by Planck in 1900 the difficulties that had faced Maxwell's generation were still unresolved. Since then theories of increasing mathematical complexity have been constructed to attempt to bring the totality of phenomena into order with little success. This work examines the problems that had been abandoned long before quantum mechanics was formulated in 1925 and argues that these issues need to be revisited before real progress in the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field can be made.

Book Weimar Culture and Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book Weimar Culture and Quantum Mechanics written by Paul Forman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reprints Paul Forman's classic papers on the history of physics in post-World War I Germany and the invention of quantum mechanics. The Forman thesis has become famous as the first argument in favor of the cultural conditioning of scientific knowledge, in particular for its demonstration of the historical connection between the culture of Weimar Germany — known for its irrationality and antiscientism — and the emerging concept of quantum acausality. At the 2007 international conference in Vancouver, Canada, leading historians of physics discussed the implications of the Forman thesis in the historiography of modern science. Their papers collected in this volume represent a cutting-edge research on the history of quantum revolution.

Book Making 20th Century Science

Download or read book Making 20th Century Science written by Stephen G. Brush and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the scientific method has been said to require proposing a theory, making a prediction of something not already known, testing the prediction, and giving up the theory (or substantially changing it) if it fails the test. A theory that leads to several successful predictions is more likely to be accepted than one that only explains what is already known but not understood. This process is widely treated as the conventional method of achieving scientific progress, and was used throughout the twentieth century as the standard route to discovery and experimentation. But does science really work this way? In Making 20th Century Science, Stephen G. Brush discusses this question, as it relates to the development of science throughout the last century. Answering this question requires both a philosophically and historically scientific approach, and Brush blends the two in order to take a close look at how scientific methodology has developed. Several cases from the history of modern physical and biological science are examined, including Mendeleev's Periodic Law, Kekule's structure for benzene, the light-quantum hypothesis, quantum mechanics, chromosome theory, and natural selection. In general it is found that theories are accepted for a combination of successful predictions and better explanations of old facts. Making 20th Century Science is a large-scale historical look at the implementation of the scientific method, and how scientific theories come to be accepted.

Book Quantum Mechanics Its Early Development And The Road To Entanglement

Download or read book Quantum Mechanics Its Early Development And The Road To Entanglement written by Edward George Steward and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-03-24 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with an explanation of the origin and establishment of quantum mechanics, with the mathematics in a digestible form, together with a descriptive survey of later developments up to the present day. The mathematical treatment closely follows the original treatment, but in modern terms, using uniform symbolism as much as possible and with simplifications (e.g. the use of one dimension instead of three) to avoid unnecessarily complicated-looking mathematics.Containing an extensive bibliography and useful appendices as well as references to original works, reviews, and biographies, the reader is well-equipped to delve further into the subject. In addition to its importance for those studying physics, it is also valuable for those studying the history of science./a

Book Formation And Logic Of Quantum Mechanics The In 3 Vols

Download or read book Formation And Logic Of Quantum Mechanics The In 3 Vols written by Masayuki Nagasaki and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-11-23 with total page 915 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the intricate logical process through which the quantum theory was developed, and shows that the quantum mechanics thus established is governed by stereo-structural logic. The method of analysis is based on Mituo Taketani's three-stage theory of scientific cognition, which was presented and developed in close connection with Yukawa's theory of the meson. According to the three-stage theory, scientific cognition proceeds through a series of coiling turns of the phenomenological, substantialistic and essentialistic stages. The old quantum mechanics is shown to be in a substantialistic stage, followed by the quantum mechanics in the corresponding essentialistic stage./a
