Book The Origin of Values

Download or read book The Origin of Values written by Raymond Boudon and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Values have always been a central topic in both philosophy and the social sciences. Statements about what is good or bad, fair or unfair, legitimate or illegitimate, express clear beliefs about human existence. The fact that values differ from culture to culture and century to century opens many questions. In The Origin of Values, Raymond Boudon offers empirical, data-based analysis of existing theories about values, while developing his own perspective as to why people accept or reject value statements. Boudon classifies the main theories of value, including those based on firm belief, social or biological factors, and rational or utilitarian attitudes. He discusses the popular and widely influential Rational Choice Model and critiques the postmodernist approach. Boudon investigates why relativism has become so powerful and contrasts it with the naturalism represented by the work of James Q. Wilson on moral sensibility. He follows with a constructive attempt to develop a new theory, beginning with Weber’s idea of non-instrumental rationality as the basis for a more complex idea of rationality. Applying Boudon’s own and existing theories of value to political issues and social ideas—the end of apartheid, the death penalty, multiculturalism, communitarianism—The Origin of Values is a significant work. Boudon fulfills a major task of social science: explanation of collective belief. His book will be of interest to sociologists, philosophers, psychologists, and political scientists.

Book The Calling of History

Download or read book The Calling of History written by Dipesh Chakrabarty and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dipesh Chakrabarty s eagerly anticipated book examines the politics of history through the careerand in many ways tragic fateof the distinguished historian Sir Jadunath Sarkar (1870-1957). One of the most important scholars in India during the first half of the twentieth century, Sarkar was knighted in 1929 and is still the only Indian historian to have ever been elected an Honorary Fellow of the American Historical Association. He was a universalizing and scientific historian, highly influential during much of his career, but, by the end of his lifetime, he became marginalized by the history establishment in India. History, Chakrabarty writes, sometimes plays truant with historians: by the 1970swhen Chakrabarty himself was a novice historianSarkar was almost completely forgotten. Through Sarkar s story, Chakrabarty explores the role of historical scholarship in India s colonial modernity and throws new light on the ways that postcolonial Indian historians embraced a more partisan idea of truth in the name of democratic and anti-colonial politics."

Book THE TRUTH OF THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE

Download or read book THE TRUTH OF THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE written by Sabrie Soloman and published by KHANNA PUBLISHING HOUSE. This book was released on 2024-06-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creation – Big Bang – Science Fiction or Science Madness The debate between creationism and scientific theories of the origin of the universe has been an ongoing and contentious one. On one side, we have the belief in a divine Creator who is responsible for the creation of the world in six days, as described in the Bible. On the other side, we have scientific theories such as the Big Bang, which posits that the universe began with a massive explosion around 13.8 billion years ago. For those who adhere to the belief in a Creator, the concept of a six-day creation holds immense significance. This belief is rooted in faith and is a fundamental tenet of many religious traditions. The idea that a higher power carefully constructed the universe, day by day, is a source of comfort and meaning for many people. Some may argue that the Big Bang theory is nothing more than science fiction or science madness, dismissing it as a fanciful and unsubstantiated idea.

Book Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Proceedings of the INFN LNF 2018 Conference

Download or read book Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Proceedings of the INFN LNF 2018 Conference written by Stefano Bellucci and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results presented in this volume highlight some of the most recent advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology studies, from both the physical and chemical point of view, with an eye also to possible engineering applications. These studies demonstrate directly how effective, and at the same time stimulating is implementing the “cross-fertilization” procedure. Indeed, multidisciplinary research allows one to catch more easily the analogies inherent different areas of science, as well as to take advantage and optimize different methods and techniques, often borrowed from other research areas. In the present Special Issue, we included six published papers. The latter contributions, on the one hand, are developed at the theory level and, on the other hand, show experimental results on the realization and experimental characterization of nanostructured systems, suitable for yielding progress towards the realization of systems and devices, that can ultimately lead to industrial applications. The results show that recent scientific research advances in these areas may provide important steps in the direction of fostering innovation and technological development.
