Download or read book The Guards Brigade in the Crimea written by Michael Springman and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guards Brigade consisted of three battalions, the 3rd Grenadier Guards, 1st Coldstream Guards and 1st Scottish Fusilier Guards (as the Scots Guards were then known). The book opens with a resumé of the causes of the War and an analysis of the woeful disorganization of the Army, in contrast to the efficiency of the Royal Navy. The Brigades performance in the major battles (Alma, inkerman etc.) is examined. The author describes the Russians plans, the ground and conditions experienced by the long suffering troops. The roles and abilities of the various commanders, often found wanting, is fascinatingly treated. After the war was over, the return home and parades are described.

Download or read book The British Soldier in America written by Sylvia R. Frey and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her investigation of the social history of the common British soldier in the era of the American Revolution, Sylvia Frey has extensively surveyed recruiting records, contemporary training manuals, statutes, and memoirs in an attempt to provide insight into the soldier's "life and mind." In the process she has discovered more about the common soldier than anyone thought possible: his social origins and occupational background, his size, age, and general physical condition, his personal economics and daily existence. Her findings dispel the traditional assumption that the army was made up largely of criminals and social misfits. Special attention is given to soldiering as an occupation. Focusing on two of the major campaigns of the war—the Northern Campaign which culminated at Saratoga and the Southern Campaign which ended at Yorktown—Frey describes the human face of war, with particular emphasis on the physical and psychic strains of campaigning in the eighteenth century. Perhaps the most important part of the work is the analysis of the moral and material factors which induced men to accept the high risks of soldiering. Frey rejects the traditional assumption that soldiers were motivated to fight exclusively by fear and force and argues instead that the primary motivation to battle was generated by regimental esprit, which in the eighteenth century substituted for patriotism. After analyzing the sources of esprit, she concludes that it was the sustaining force for morale in a long and discouraging war. This book is a contribution to our understanding of the eighteenth century and should appeal not only to military historians but also to social and economic historians and to those interested in the history of medicine.

Download or read book Triumphs Disasters written by Andrew Bamford and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Thomas Grahams Netherlands Campaign of 18131814 has produced a surprisingly rich crop of memoirs and letters. This compelling new book brings together six of the shorter accounts, several of them never before seen in print, to help shed new light on the triumphs and disasters of these forgotten operations. Mixing formal reports with lively personal narratives, and contemporary letters and diaries with later reflections, this selection covers all the major actions of the campaign and the authors range from one of Grahams senior staff to an NCO in one of his infantry battalions. In addition to explanatory notes throughout, detailed appendices resolve some of the controversies arising from these and other eyewitness accounts, helping to increase our understanding of these little-known but important operations. Carefully researched and expertly compiled by historian Andrew Bamford, this is a valuable and absorbing new source, which will be of great interest to any student of the period.
