Book Origin and Evolution of the Gastropod Family Pomatiopsidae with Emphasis on the Mekong River Triculinae

Download or read book Origin and Evolution of the Gastropod Family Pomatiopsidae with Emphasis on the Mekong River Triculinae written by George Davis and published by Academy of Natural Sciences. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes an extraordinary endemic radiation of hydrobioid snails in the Mekong River (MR). The monophyletic radiation involving the subfamily Triculinae, 3 tribes, 11 genera, & 92 species, is larger than contemporaneous endemic freshwater gastropod faunas of centers of endemism, such as lakes Tanganyika & Baikal. The study addresses the issue of how higher taxa arise by analyzing the series of adaptive radiations within the MR Triculinae. The worldwide family Hydrobiidae is polyphyletic & includes 2 distinct lineages, the Hydrobiidae sensu stricto & the Pomatiopsidae with the subfamilies Pomatiopsidae & Triculinae. The differences between the two families were masked by convergence in shell, radula, penis, & operculum. Maps & illus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiations, or Evolution in Action We have just celebrated the “Darwin Year” with the double anniversary of his 200th birthday and 150th year of his masterpiece, “On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection”. In this work, Darwin established the factual evidence of biological evolution, that species change over time, and that new organisms arise by the splitting of ancestral forms into two or more descendant species. However, above all, Darwin provided the mechanisms by arguing convincingly that it is by natural selection – as well as by sexual selection (as he later added) – that organisms adapt to their environment. The many discoveries since then have essentially con?rmed and strengthened Darwin’s central theses, with latest evidence, for example, from molecular genetics, revealing the evolutionary relationships of all life forms through one shared history of descent from a common ancestor. We have also come a long way to progressively understand more on how new species actually originate, i. e. on speciation which remained Darwin’s “mystery of m- teries”, as noted in one of his earliest transmutation notebooks. Since speciation is the underlying mechanism for radiations, it is the ultimate causation for the biological diversity of life that surrounds us.

Written by world authorities, this book examines many aspects of the biology, pathology, and control of the schistosoma parasite. Ranging in topic from infection in Pharaonic Egypt, through DNA relationships and biological systems, to advances in development of vaccines against the parasite, this book is a comprehensive text written for researchers and medical professionals alike.

Book Bryozoan Evolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank K. McKinney

  • Release : 1991-10-15
  • ISBN : 9780226560472

Download or read book Bryozoan Evolution written by Frank K. McKinney and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1991-10-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors argue that the growth pattern and form of the colony in many bryozoans is an adaptive strategy rather than a stable genetic character. "Bryozoan Evolution is profusely illustrated and has a bibliography of over 400 titles. It will find an appreciative audience of paleontologists, invertebrate zoologists, and ecologists thanks to its innovative and detailed evaluations of the roles of ecology, adaptive and functional morphology, life histories, biomechanics, developmental constraints, and chance on the evolution of the marine taxa of this speciose group."—Russel L. Zimmer, Science "This book is an excellent source of information on the functional morphology and variety of colonial architecture in bryozoans, very well illustrated, and worth reading at least twice."-Robert L. Anstey, Paleobiology "Even as one of the converted, I found the book a stimulating combination of paleobiology and ecology. In many ways it is a 'teaser'-the authors suggest a number of interesting hypotheses, and can test only some of them. Perhaps most important, McKinney and Jackson provide a plethora of fascinating ideas and examples that demonstrate the potential of this group of animals, and that should stimulate more work."-Michael S. Keough, TREE "This stimulating book is sure to promote further interest in bryozoans. It will appeal to biologists and paleontologists alike."-Paul Taylor, Times Higher Education Supplement
