Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work describes the historical origins of the Tantric movement in early medieval India. Drawing on primary documents--translated into English for the first time from Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Bengali--Davidson shows how changes in medieval Indian society, including economic and patronage crises, a decline in women's participation, and the formation of large monastic orders, led to the rise of the esoteric tradition in India that became the model for Buddhist cultures in China, Tibet, and Japan.

Download or read book History of Language written by Steven Roger Fischer and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2004-10-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is tempting to take the tremendous rate of contemporary linguistic change for granted. What is required, in fact, is a radical reinterpretation of what language is. Steven Roger Fischer begins his book with an examination of the modes of communication used by dolphins, birds and primates as the first contexts in which the concept of "language" might be applied. As he charts the history of language from the times of Homo erectus, Neanderthal humans and Homo sapiens through to the nineteenth century, when the science of linguistics was developed, Fischer analyses the emergence of language as a science and its development as a written form. He considers the rise of pidgin, creole, jargon and slang, as well as the effects radio and television, propaganda, advertising and the media are having on language today. Looking to the future, he shows how electronic media will continue to reshape and re-invent the ways in which we communicate. "[a] delightful and unexpectedly accessible book ... a virtuoso tour of the linguistic world."—The Economist "... few who read this remarkable study will regard language in quite the same way again."—The Good Book Guide

Download or read book Roots of language written by Derek Bickerton and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roots of language was originally published in 1981 by Karoma Press (Ann Arbor). It was the first work to systematically develop a theory first suggested by Coelho in the late nineteenth century: that the creation of creole languages somehow reflected universal properties of language. The book also proposed that the same set of properties would be found to emerge in normal first-language acquisition and must have emerged in the original evolution of language. These proposals, some of which were elaborated in an article in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (1984), were immediately controversial and gave rise to a great deal of subsequent research in creoles, much of it aimed at rebutting the theory. The book also served to legitimize and stimulate research in language evolution, a topic regarded as off-limits by linguists for over a century. The present edition contains a foreword by the author bringing the theory up to date; a fuller exposition of many of its aspects can be found in the author's most recent work, More than nature needs (Harvard University Press, 2014).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vaisesikadarsana Of Kanada Is One Of The Oldest Among The Indian Systems Of Philosophy. But A Comprehensive History Of The Subject Has Not As Yet Been Attempted Presumably For Want Of Published Materials. There Is A Long Gap Between Kanada And Prasastapada. But Jain Scholars Inform Us Of Brisk Activities During This Dark Period. The Ancient And Modern Nyaya Sub-Schools Regarded The Vaisesika As Their Samana-Tantra. The Buddhists Accepted Them As Their Worthy Rivals. The Printed Vaisesika Texts Are But A Fraction Of Their Former Rich Literature. But Important Texts Have Recently Been Discovered In Manuscripts. As The Vaisesikas Had Intimate Relation With The Nyaya, Buddhist And Jain Systems, The Vaisesika Materials Could Be Traced From Them And Other Non-Vaisesika Texts Offering Important Information On The Vaisesika History And Exegesis. They Were First Presented In The Form Of Articles And Ultimately Integrated In The Present Volume. It Is True That Considering The Time Span And The Rich Heritage Of The Vaisesika The Attempt Made Here Is Very Small. It Is Expected That More Manuscripts Of Lost Vaisesika Works And More References And Quotations May Be Gathered From Non-Vaisesika Sources Especially The Tibetan Versions Of The Buddhist Logical Works And Commentaries Of The Dignaga And Dharmakirti School.

Download or read book Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids written by J. D. Achenbach and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids focuses on linearized theory and perfectly elastic media. This book discusses the one-dimensional motion of an elastic continuum; linearized theory of elasticity; elastodynamic theory; and elastic waves in an unbounded medium. The plane harmonic waves in elastic half-spaces; harmonic waves in waveguides; and forced motions of a half-space are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the transient waves in layers and rods; diffraction of waves by a slit; and thermal and viscoelastic effects, and effects of anisotropy and nonlinearity. Other topics include the summary of equations in rectangular coordinates, time-harmonic plane waves, approximate theories for rods, and transient in-plane motion of a layer. This publication is a good source for students and researchers conducting work on the wave propagation in elastic solids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of matter and the idea of indivisible parts has fascinated philosophers, historians, scientists and physicists from antiquity to the present day. This collection covers the richness of its history, starting with how the Ancient Greeks came to assume the existence of atoms and concluding with contemporary metaphysical debates about structure, time and reality. Focusing on important moments in the history of human thought when the debate about atomism was particularly flourishing and transformative for the scientific and philosophical spirit of the time, this collection covers: - The discovery of atomism in ancient philosophy - Ancient non-Western, Arabic and late Medieval thought - The Renaissance, when along with the re-discovery of ancient thought, atomism became once again an important doctrine to be fully debated - Logical atomism in early analytic philosophy, with Russell and Wittgenstein - Atomism in Liberalism and Marxism - Atomism and the philosophy of time - Atomism in contemporary metaphysics - Atomism and the sciences Featuring 28 chapters by leading and younger scholars, this valuable collection reveals the development of one of philosophy's central doctrines across 2,500 years and within a broad range of philosophical traditions.
