This book presents the first in-depth, comparative study of household economy and settlement in three micro-regions: the Mediterranean (Sicily), Central Europe (Hungary), and Northern Europe (South Scandinavia). The results are based on ten years of fieldwork in a similar method of documentation, and scientific analyses were used in each of the regional studies, making controlled comparisons possible. The new evidence demonstrates how differences in settlement organisation and household economies were counterbalanced by similarities in the organised use of the landscape in an economy dominated by the herding of large flocks of sheep and cattle. This book's innovative theoretical and methodological approaches will be of relevance to all researchers of landscape and settlement history.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research paper is to examine the validity and utility of a comprehensive research methodology in assessing a participatory organizing process of irrigation management transfer. To achieve this objetctive, the paper evaluates the methodologies employed and the results of research conducted by the International Irrigation Management Institute (IIMI), the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) of the Philippines, and collaborating universities in the Philippines to assess the Farmer Irrigators' Organization Program (FIOP) country wide. Three research methodologies were used: (l) Process Documentation Research (PDR); (2) Validation Workshops; and (3) Validation Questionnaire Surveys. The research program was financed by the United Stades Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Accelerated Agricultural Production Program (AAPP). The workshop and the questionnaire survey, on the other hand, were useful in "validating" the PDR findings. Because of the large sample size and the area covered, the analyst could get a better picture of FIOP countrywide. The issues validated through workshops and questionnaire surveys originated from PDR. Thus the validation process was "guided" by the PDR results and was confined to the key issues that emerged from the PDR activity. Hence the validation was a quick process.

Labor unions now focus on the narrowest possible understanding of the interests of their members, and membership continues to decline in lockstep with the narrowing of their goals. Meanwhile, promising movements like Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter lack sufficient power to accomplish meaningful change. Why do progressives in the United States keep losing on so many issues? In No Shortcuts, Jane McAlevey argues that progressives can win, but lack the organized power to enact significant change, to outlast their bosses in labor fights, and to hold elected leaders accountable. Drawing upon her experience as a scholar and longtime organizer in the student, environmental, and labor movements, McAlevey examines cases from labor unions and social movements to pinpoint the factors that helped them succeed - or fail - to accomplish their intended goals. McAlevey makes a compelling case that the great social movements of previous eras gained their power from mass organizing, a strategy today's progressives have mostly abandoned in favor of shallow mobilization or advocacy. Now, many developing countries like India have become frequent users of this measure. For a better understanding of the various provisions of the WTO's Anti-dumping Agreement (ADA) a critical investigation of the resulting jurisprudence is a necessity.
