Book Organized Crime In Insurance Fraud

Download or read book Organized Crime In Insurance Fraud written by Chris Longino and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing trend of insurance fraud continues to cost US consumers billions of dollars a year through increased premiums. In 2015, the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud estimated the cost of insurance fraud as being at least $80 billion dollars a year. Even though an increasing number of criminals are drawn to the low risk, high reward of insurance fraud, little criminological literature has explored this topic and the public remains relatively unaware of the extent of the problem. One alarming aspect of insurance fraud is the involvement of organized criminal groups. These organized criminal enterprises are formed for the sole purpose of defrauding the insurance industry. Often, these enterprises are believed to have ties to traditional organized criminal groups, such as the Italian Mafia or the Russian Mob. In order to combat these criminal organizations, it is important to understand the behavior and motivation of such groups. The present study aims to analyze the generally held belief throughout the insurance industry that organized insurance fraud rings are more likely to operate in states with mandatory Personal Injury Protection (PIP) policies. This analysis was conducted by examining staged automobile accidents reported to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The results of this analysis were mixed. Although a larger percentage of states with mandatory PIP displayed higher staged accident rate, some mandatory PIP states did not, and multiple non-PIP states also demonstrated a high staged accident rate. In an attempt to better understand this crime, further criminological research is needed.

Book Broken Promises

Download or read book Broken Promises written by Robert Tillman and published by UPNE. This book was released on 1998 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the costs of medical care have skyrocketed, so has the amount of money lost to fraudulent health insurance providers. These bogus operations typically victimize individuals on the lower end of the socioeconomic scale who then face staggering medical bills without coverage. Robert Tillman shows how market conditions and weak regulatory structures have allowed these crimes to occur, and cites recent institutional and legal changes that have created both new demands for insurance and greater opportunities for fraud. He also analyzes the political and economic climate that enables these criminal practices to flourish. Drawing on court documents, congressional hearings, and actual cases, Tillman provides numerous examples of the three most prevalent forms of fraud: scams involving multiple employer welfare arrangements, employee leasing schemes, and fictitious labor unions. He also examines recent innovations in insurance fraud such as "24-hour plans" and coverage offered by dubious religious organizations. With the regulation of health insurance currently in chaos, Broken Promises offers a critical examination of this insidious form of white-collar crime. It is a timely book that raises important questions about the definition of insurance and consumer protection.

Book Psychology of Fraud

Download or read book Psychology of Fraud written by J. Michael Skiba, Ph.d. and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimates reveal that insurance fraud costs $80 billion per year--and that's just in the United States of America. That translates into almost $1,000 annually per household. Weak preventative controls and paltry punishments make insurance fraud particularly attractive to criminals, who often use it as their preferred vehicle for funding organized crime and terrorist activities. J. Michael Skiba examines why insurance fraud is seen as a low-risk, high-reward offense and the toll it takes on society. He also highlights how criminological theory can be used in a counter fraud setting; how pressure, opportunity, and rationalization form the basis of insurance fraud; and how to identify where you're most vulnerable. By learning how the mind of a fraudster works, you'll be equipped to fix problem areas. More importantly, you'll have the insights you need to develop a comprehensive anti-fraud program. Reduce the opportunity to commit insurance fraud, mitigate losses, boost profitability, and save honest customers money by drilling down into the Psychology of Fraud.
