Understanding the advertent and inadvertent effects of domestication on crops has been instrumental in bolstering food security efforts. For instance, by identifying and re-incorporating lost genotypic variation due to domestication, we can increase crop tolerance to biotic and abiotic stressors. With changing climatic conditions and the ever-growing human population, it has become more imperative to increase and fortify agricultural production. My dissertation addresses this topic in two agronomically important legumes: chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and pea (Pisum sativum). My research aims to increase the agronomic and economic value of these legumes to facilitate agricultural production as well as lessen financial burdens to farmers. To accomplish this aim, in chickpea, we identified the physiological and genetic basis of the green-seed market type and identified the effects of domestication on the response to a novel environment. Furthermore, in pea, we investigated phenotypic variation for cover cropping traits using wild accessions, landraces, and modern varieties. In chickpea, we identified that green-seeded chickpea market type was due to a loss of function mutation of the CaStGR1 (carietinum stay-green gene 1) gene involved in chlorophyll catabolism. Additionally, physiological testing in drought conditions revealed this phenotype to be of the "cosmetic" and not the "functional '' stay-green variety. Furthermore, nutritional analysis revealed that this trait was associated with a 2-3 fold increase in provitaminogenic carotenoids that are important for human nutrition. Therefore, this green-seeded trait may increase both the economic and nutritional value of chickpea. To identify how domestication has affected chickpea response to novel environments, we took a whole-plant approach and measured above- and below-ground response to increased nitrogen presence in chickpea. Results revealed that domestication has canalized domesticated chickpea response to nitrogen-rich environments. Furthermore, the variable response of wild chickpea to nitrogen illustrated the need for the use of a comprehensive assortment of wild relative accessions to fully discern the effects of domestication on domesticated organisms. Lastly, we coined the terms "rotational" and "intercropping value" and provide a mathematical equation to quantify these terms. We also discuss numerous methods on how to increase these values. To demonstrate these ideas, we measured the rotational values of domesticated and wild pea. We identified that rotational values and cover-cropping traits such as nutrient mobilization and microbial recruitment vary within field pea. These results indicate that field pea could potentially be improved as a rotational partner and that the use of wild relatives in cover cropping research, which has been underutilized, should be considered. Overall, these results illustrate the importance of understanding the effects of domestication and highlights the importance of crop wild relatives as phenotypic reservoirs for crop improvement. Collectively, my research provides insightful information that can facilitate agricultural production at the farming and breeding level.

A number of approaches can help us to understand NUE as a whole. One involves adopting best crop management practices that take into account root-induced rhizosphere processes, which play a pivotal role in controlling nutrient dynamics in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. New technologies, from basic tools like leaf color charts to sophisticated sensor-based systems and laser land leveling, can reduce the dependency on laboratory assistance and manual labor. Another approach concerns the development of crop plants through genetic manipulations that allow them to take up and assimilate nutrients more efficiently, as well as identifying processes of plant responses to nutrient deficiency stress and exploring natural genetic variation. Though only recently introduced, the ability of microbial inoculants to induce NUE is gaining in importance, as the loss, immobilization, release and availability of nutrients are mediated by soil microbial processes.

Collaborative research efforts of the Department of Agriculture Reform and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (DAR-ICRISAT) have contributed to an eightfold increase in crop yield due to the introduction of more efficient varieties of chickpea in the country. Good agricultural practices (GAP) and value chain promotion of chickpea have significant potential which can further boost productivity and increase exports. The upgraded GAP standards of chickpea are inclusive of food safety, produce quality, worker health and safety, and environmental management aspects, as they were developed in a context-specific and participatory manner encompassing validation from farmers about the existing constraints in application of GAP. Dissemination and improved application of chickpea GAP is planned to be achieved through a comprehensive capacity-building programme of chickpea smallholder farmers, public–private partners, and value chain actors, at pre- and post-harvest levels. Strengthening lead farmers and crop producers’ organizations through technical support, improved demonstration and market linkages will leverage the objectives of GAP adoption and upscaling in the target regions. On-farm demonstrations, farmer field schools (FFS), training, and information and communications technology (ICT) tools will supplement GAP promotional interventions. User-friendly integrated pest management (IPM) handbooks and FFS curricula support farmers and existing GAP initiatives will foster the approach of climate-smart good agricultural practices at farmers' field level and will ensure the sustainability of farmers' income through increased productivity, product market competence and produce quality.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A field experiment was conducted on clay textured soil at Agricultural Research Station, Annigeri, UAS, Dharwad during rabi season of 2009-10 and 2010-11 to study the "Effect of organics on growth and yield of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in Vertisols of northern dry zone of Karnataka." The soil application of organic manures and foliar spray of liquid organic manures at flower initiation and 15 days after flowering (DAF) significantly enhanced the growth and yield parameters of chickpea viz., plant height, number of branches, Leaf Area Index, Total Dry Matter, number of root nodule and dry weight of nodules, number of pods per plant, 100-seed weight, grain yield and haulm yield. Among treatment combinations, application of enriched compost 1/3 + vermicompost 1/3 + glyricidia leaf manure 1/3 equivalent to 100% RDN and foliar spray of panchagavya @ 3% at flower initiation and 15 DAF has recorded significantly higher grain yield (2400 kg/ha), haulm yield (3423 kg/ha), number of pods per plant (66.38) and 100-seed weight (20.91 g) compared to other treatment combinations. While, lowest grain yield (1446 kg/ha), haulm yield (2376 kg/ha), number of pods per plant (43.91)

Pest resistant cultivars represent one of the most environmentally benign, economically viable and ecologically sustainable options for utilization in IPM programs. Hundreds of insect-resistant cultivars of rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, cotton, sugarcane and other crops have been developed worldwide and are extensively grown for increasing and/or stabilizing crop productivity. The annual economic value of arthropod resistance genes developed in global agriculture has been estimated to be greater than US$ 2 billion Despite the impressive achievements and even greater potential in minimizing pest- related losses, only a handful of books have been published on the topic of host-plant resistance to insects. This book fills this wide gap in the literature on breeding insect- resistant crops. It is aimed at plant breeders, entomologists, plant biotechnologists and IPM experts, as well as those working on sustainable agriculture and food security.
