Excerpt: ...order to give place to the new and beautiful verdure of the month of May, with its smiling and varied flowers--the thousand fountains which we could at one view behold, leaping out with soothing music from the shelves of perpendicular rocks bordering the river--all lent their aid to increase the beauty of the scenery of Nature, which, in this region of the Columbia, seems to have put forth all her energy to display her grandeur and magnificence. After some hours of descent we came to Martin's rapid, where a Canadian, so called, together with his son, found a watery grave. Its roar is deafening, and the agitation of the water resembles that of a raging sea-storm. The whole bed of the river is here strewed with immense fragments of rocks. Guided by an expert Iroquois pilot, and aided with ten oars, the boat darted over its boisterous surface, dancing-like and leaping from wave to wave, with the rapidity of lightning. At sunset we were at the Dalle of the Dead. (Dalle is an old French word, meaning a trough, and the name is given by the Canadian voya-geurs to all contracted running waters, hemmed in by walls of rocks.) Here, in 1838, twelve unfortunate travellers were buried in the river. The waters are compressed between a range of perpendicular rocks, presenting innumerable crags, fissures and cliffs, through which the Columbia leaps with irrestible impetuosity, forming, as it dashes along, frightful whirlpools, where every passing object is swallowed and disappears. By means of two long ropes we dropped down our boat through the Dalle, and encamped for the night at its outlet On the 11th we continued our route at early dawn--the mountain scenery was hidden from our view wrapped up in dense mist and fog, which were seen ascending in dense...

Book Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

Download or read book Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians written by Alan Merriam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All people, in no matter what culture, must be able to place their music firmly in the context of the totality of their beliefs, experiences, and activities, for without such ties, music cannot exist. This means that there must be a body of theory connected with any music system - not necessarily a theory of the structure of music sound, although that may be present as well, but rather a theory of what music is, what it does, and how it is coordinated with the total environment, both natural and cultural, in which human beings move. The Flathead Indians of Western Montana (just over 26,000 in number as of the 2000 census) inhabit a reservation consisting of 632,516 acres of land in the Jocko and Flathead Valleys and the Camas Prairie country, which lie roughly between Evaro and Kalispell, Montana. The reservation is bounded on the east by the Mission Range, on the west by the Cabinet National Forest, on the south by the Lolo National Forest, and on the north by an arbitrary line, approximately bisecting Flathead Lake about twenty-four miles south of Kalispell. The area is one of the richest agricultural regions in Montana, and fish and game are abundant. The Flathead are engaged in stocking, timbering, and various agricultural enterprises. For the Flathead, the most important single fact about music and its relationship to the total world is its origin in the supernatural sphere. All true and proper songs, particularly in the past, owe their origin to a variety of contacts experienced by humans with beings which, though a part of this world, are superhuman and the source of both individual and tribal powers and skills. Thus a sharp distinction is drawn by the Flathead between what they call "make-up" and all other songs. Merriam's pioneering work in the relationship of ethnography and musicology remains a primary source in this field in anthropology.

Download or read book Mission Among the Blackfeet written by Howard L. Harrod and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1975-10-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the once vital world of the Blackfoot Indians crumbled in the face of advancing white civilization, shrinking buffalo herds, and the ravages of smallpox, yet another blow was struck at its social and religious foundations with the arrival of the Christian missionaries, both Protestant and Catholic. In this book the author recounts the history of the missions and their impact on the Blackfeet, from their founding in the 1840's to the present day. He has drawn upon much previously unpublished material to recapture the tribe's proud and tragic moments, the sometimes equally tragic fate of the missionaries, and the effects of shifting governmental and denominational policies upon both groups.
