Book Oral Literary Performance in Africa

Download or read book Oral Literary Performance in Africa written by Nduka Otiono and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-31 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delivers an admirably comprehensive and rigorous analysis of African oral literatures and performance. Gathering insights from distinguished scholars in the field, the book provides a range of contemporary interdisciplinary perspectives in the study of oral literature and its transformations in everyday life, fiction, poetry, popular culture, and postcolonial politics. Topics discussed include folklore and folklife; oral performance and masculinities; intermediated orality, modern transformations, and globalisation; orality and mass media; spoken word and imaginative writing. The book also addresses research methodologies and the thematic and theoretical trajectories of scholars of African oral literatures, looking back to the trailblazing legacies of Ruth Finnegan, Harold Scheub, and Isidore Okpewho. Ambitious in scope and incisive in its analysis, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of African literatures and oral performance as well as to general readers interested in the dynamics of cultural production.

Book Multimedia Research and Documentation of Oral Genres in Africa

Download or read book Multimedia Research and Documentation of Oral Genres in Africa written by Daniela Merolla and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches a central concern of oral literature studies worldwide, with a special focus on Africa: how to deal with oral genres in a world where new technologies have become available to more and more people? As the book asserts, what is new is that the spotlight is directed towards (old and new) "interlocutors" who cooperate in the making of technologized oral genres in an increasingly technologized world. Their interactions affect the performance, as well as research - their roles and positions raise methodological and ethical questions particularly when local/national identities and commercial interests are at stake. Book Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle East

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle East written by Paul S Rowe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle East gathers a diverse team of international scholars, each of whom provides unique expertise into the status and prospects of minority populations in the region. The dramatic events of the past decade, from the Arab Spring protests to the rise of the Islamic state, have brought the status of these populations onto centre stage. The overturn of various long-term autocratic governments in states such as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, and the ongoing threat to government stability in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have all contributed to a new assertion of majoritarian politics amid demands for democratization and regime change. In the midst of the dramatic changes and latent armed conflict, minority populations have been targeted, marginalized, and victimized. Calls for social and political change have led many to contemplate the ways in which citizenship and governance may be changed to accommodate minorities – or indeed if such change is possible. At a time when the survival of minority populations and the utility of the label minority has been challenged, this handbook answers the following set of research questions. What are the unique challenges of minority populations in the Middle East? How do minority populations integrate into their host societies, both as a function of their own internal choices, and as a response to majoritarian consensus on their status? Finally, given their inherent challenges, and the vast, sweeping changes that have taken place in the region over the past decade, what is the future of these minority populations? What impact have minority populations had on their societies, and to what extent will they remain prominent actors in their respective settings? This handbook presents leading-edge research on a wide variety of religious, ethnic, and other minority populations. By reclaiming the notion of minorities in Middle Eastern settings, we seek to highlight the agency of minority communities in defining their past, present, and future.

Book Media Ownership in Africa in the Digital Age

Download or read book Media Ownership in Africa in the Digital Age written by Winston Mano and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who owns the media and communications in Africa today and with what implications? The book elegantly answers this urgent question by unpacking multiple dimensions of media ownership through rare and authoritative perspectives, including both historical and contemporary digital developments. It traces the evolving forms of ownership of media and communications in specific African contexts, showing how they interact with broader changes in and outside the continent. The book also shows how Big Techs, such as Meta (formerly known as Facebook), are involved in a scramble for Africa’s digital ecosystem and how their advance brings both opportunities and concerns about ownership and control. The chapters analyse evolving forms of ownership and their implications on media concentration and democracy across Africa. The book offers a nuanced account of how media ownership structures are in some instances captured with an ever-growing and complex ecosystem that also has new opportunities for public interest media. Offering a significant representation of the trends and diversity of existing media systems, the book goes beyond the postcolonial geographical divisions of North and Sub-Saharan Africa to highlight common patterns and significant similarities and differences of communications ownerships between and within African countries. The contributors expose media and communications ownership patterns in Africa that are centralised and yet decentralising and in some cases, battling, resurging and globalising.

Book Orature and Yoruba Riddles

Download or read book Orature and Yoruba Riddles written by A. Akinyeme and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orature and Yorùbá Riddles takes readers into the hitherto unexplored undercurrents of riddles in Africa. Because of its oral and all too often ephemeral nature, riddles have escaped close scrutiny from scholars. The strength of the Yorùbá as the focus of this study is impressive indeed: a major ethnic group in Africa, with established connections with the black diaspora in North America and the Caribean; a rich oral and written culture; a large and diverse population; and an integrated rural-urban society. The book is divided into six chapters for readers' convenience. When read in sequence, the book provides a comprehensive, holistic sense of Yorùbá creativity where riddles are concerned. At the same time, the book is conceived in a way that each chapter could be read individually. Therefore, those readers seeking understanding of a specific type of riddle may target a single chapter appearing most relevant to her/his curiosity.

Book Oralit africaine et cr ation

Download or read book Oralit africaine et cr ation written by Anne-Marie Dauphin-Tinturier and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2005 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Oralit et lien social au moyen ge written by Marie-France Auzépy and published by ACHCByz. This book was released on 2008 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Recherches ouvertes sur le num rique written by PAPY Fabrice and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
