Book The Order of Minims in Seventeenth Century France

Download or read book The Order of Minims in Seventeenth Century France written by P.J.S. Whitmore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking of the text from the Dies frae (S. Matthew, XXV, 40). It is also probable that this other Saint Francis, partly out of admiration for his illustrious compatriot of Assisi and partly from a compelling urge to be superlative in all things, chose the title in opposition to the Franciscans, the Fratres Minori, l who had previously adopted this style taken from Saint Matthew, XXIII, 8. The title "Minim" was confirmed in these words" ... eosque Eremitos Ordinis Minimorum Fratrum Eremitarum F. Francesci de Paula in posterum nuncupari," taken from the Papal Bull, Meritis religiosae vitae, of 26 February, 1493. The earliest reference to the Order in France is in a fragment preserved in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal called, La regle et vie de Frere Franfois, pauvre et humble hermite de Paule, laquelle donne a tous ses 2 freres voulant entrer et vivre en son ordre. The dating of this manuscript should be accepted with considerable reserve; it bears a clearly legible "1474," although it seems most unlikely that any reference to an Order occurred before the Bull of 1493 or that any Rule appeared in French before the Founder's visit to Louis XI in 1483. 3 The fame of Francis and his reputation as a "guerisseur" had reached the French court where Louis XI was sick and dying; the King summoned him to the chateau of Le Plessis-Ies-Tours, but it required the intervention of the Pope to make the hermit undertake the journey

Book The First Translations of Machiavelli s Prince

Download or read book The First Translations of Machiavelli s Prince written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first complete study of the translations of Machiavelli’s Prince made in Europe and the Mediterranean countries during the period from the sixteenth to the first half of the nineteenth century: the first, unpublished French translation by Jacques de Vintimille (1546), the first Latin translation by Silvestro Tegli (1560), as well as the first translations in Dutch (1615), German (1692), Swedish (1757) and Arabic (1824). The first translation produced in Spain - dated somewhere between the end of the sixteenth and the early seventeenth century - remained in manuscript form, while there was a second vernacular Spanish version around 1680. The situation in Great Britain was different from the rest of Europe, as it could boast four manuscript translations by the end of the sixteenth century.

Book Approaches to Teaching the Works of Christine de Pizan

Download or read book Approaches to Teaching the Works of Christine de Pizan written by Andrea Tarnowski and published by Modern Language Association of America. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prolific poet and a protofeminist, Christine de Pizan worked within a sophisticated late medieval court culture and formed an identity as an authority on her society's preoccupations with religion, politics, and morality. Her works address various aspects of misogyny, the appropriate actions of rulers, and the ethical framework for social conduct. In addition to gaining a readership in fifteenth-century France, Christine's works influenced writers in Tudor England and were identified by twentieth-century readers as important contributions both to the emergence of a professional literary class and to the intellectual climate that gave rise to early modern Europe.Part 1 of this volume, "Materials," surveys the editions in Middle French, translations into modern French and English, and the many scholarly resources and critical reactions of the past fifty years. Part 2, "Approaches," provides insights into various aspects of Christine's works that can be explored with students, from considerations of genre and form to the themes of virtue, history, and memory. Teachers of French, English, world literature, and women's studies will find useful ideas throughout the volume.

Book Montaigne

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michel de Montaigne
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1907
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 440 pages

Download or read book Montaigne written by Michel de Montaigne and published by . This book was released on 1907 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel Eyquem de Montaigne's "Essays" were first published in 1580. In the depth and breadth of subject matter addressed, Socrates dictum appears to provide the guiding principle: "the unexamined life is not worth living." Seldom has a life been examined more thoroughly than that of Montaigne, who famously 'retired' from public life at 38, spending the next ten years sequestered in his library of some 1,500 works - engaged by the passion that came before all other occupations--reading and writing. The wide range of questions, chiefly investigating the reality of the human condition, presents a guide to the quest of self, the well-lived life, and independence of mind. The book presents extracts from Montaigne's "Essays" of shorter length, given the moderate compass of the volume. It introduces the English speaking reader to the inimitable essayist, in hope it will provoke further and deeper reading of this timeless author's work.

Book A Bibliographical Guide to the Study of Troubadours and Old Occitan Literature

Download or read book A Bibliographical Guide to the Study of Troubadours and Old Occitan Literature written by Robert A Taylor and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it seemed in the mid-1970s that the study of the troubadours and of Occitan literature had reached a sort of zenith, it has since become apparent that this moment was merely a plateau from which an intensive renewal was being launched. In this new bibliographic guide to Occitan and troubadour literature, Robert Taylor provides a definitive survey of the field of Occitan literary studies - from the earliest enigmatic texts to the fifteenth-century works of Occitano-Catalan poet Jordi de Sant Jordi - and treats over two thousand recent books and articles with full annotations. Taylor includes articles on related topics such as practical approaches to the language of the troubadours and the musicology of select troubadour songs, as well as articles situated within sociology, religious history, critical methodology, and psychoanalytical analysis. Each listing offers descriptive comments on the scholarly contribution of each source to Occitan literature, with remarks on striking or controversial content, and numerous cross-references that identify complementary studies and differing opinions. Taylor's painstaking attention to detail and broad knowledge of the field ensure that this guide will become the essential source for Occitan literary studies worldwide.
