Book Optical Fiber Sensor Technology

Download or read book Optical Fiber Sensor Technology written by L.S. Grattan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-12-31 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in optical fiber sensors The field of optical fiber sensor technology is one that continues to expand and develop at a rate that could barely have been predicted a few years ago. The wealth of publications appearing in the technical literature and the burgeoning number of papers presented at the now well-established series of national and international conferences, which are attended by a wide selection of technically qualified optoelectronics professionals, gives a clear indication of both the range and scale of the devices and applications now seen in the subject. Such a rapid expansion makes it very difficult for the scientist and engineer, under pressure to be both informed and effective for an employer, to attend all these meetings, selectively read the appropriate literature and be able quickly to gain the knowledge in those specific areas which will give the best advantage for the work in hand. To that end, this volume has been planned and carefully designed to provide an essential overview, and detailed specific information, on those novel and exciting aspects of optical fiber sensor technology that have recently emerged, with particular focus on the devices and the exciting applications of this part of optoelectronic technology in the vast international measurement and instrumentation area.

Book Optical Fiber Sensor Technology

Download or read book Optical Fiber Sensor Technology written by L.S. Grattan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental and chemical sensors in optical fiber sensor technology The nature of the environment in which we live and work, and the precarious state of many aspects of the natural environment, has been a major lesson for scientists over the last few decades. Public awareness of the issues involved is high, and often coupled with a scepticism of the ability of the scientist and engineer to provide an adequate, or even rapid solution to the preservation of the environment before further damage is done, and to achieve this with a mini mum of expenditure. Monitoring of the various aspects of the environment, whether it be external or internal to ourselves and involving chemical, physical or biomedical parameters is an essential process for the well-being of mankind and of the individual. Legis lative requirements set new standards for measurement and control all around us, which must be met by the most appropriate of the technologies available, commensurate with the costs involved. Optical fiber sensor technology has a major part to play in this process, both to complement existing technologies and to promote new solutions to difficult measurement issues. The developments in new sources and detectors covering wider ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, with higher sensitivity, allow the use of techniques that some time ago would have been considered inappropriate or lacking in sufficient sensitivity.

Download or read book Optical Fiber Sensor Technology written by L.S. Grattan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems and Applications in Optical Fiber Sensor Technology The essential technology which underpins developments in optical fiber sensors continues to expand, and continues to be driven to a very large extent by advances in optoelectronics which have been produced for the ever-expanding optical com munications systems and networks of the world. The steps forward in the technol ogy, often accompanied by a reduction in the price of associated components, have been, and continue to be, adapted for use in a wide variety of optical fiber sensor systems. These include, for example, the use of photoinduced gratings as fiber sensor components, coupled with the wider availability of shorter wavelength lasers, bright luminescent sources and high-sensitivity detectors which have opened up new possibilities for both novel fiber optic sensor applications and new sensing systems. This is to be welcomed at a time when, coupled with integrated optic miniaturized devices and detectors, real possibilities of systems integration, at lower cost and increased utility, can be offered. The fiber laser, and the expansions of the types and availability of the doped fiber on which it is based, offer further examples of the integration of the essential components of advanced optical sensor systems, fitted for a new range of applications.

Book Fundamentals of Optical Fiber Sensors

Download or read book Fundamentals of Optical Fiber Sensors written by Zujie Fang and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the latest development in optical fiber devices, and their applications to sensor technology. Optical fiber sensors, an important application of the optical fiber, have experienced fast development, and attracted wide attentions in basic science as well as in practical applications. Sensing is often likened to human sense organs. Optical fiber can not only transport information acquired by sensors at high speed and large volume, but also can play the roles of sensing element itself. Compared with electric and other types of sensors, fiber sensor technology has unique merits. It has advantages over conventional bulky optic sensors, such as combination of sensing and signal transportation, smaller size, and possibility of building distributed systems. Fiber sensor technology has been used in various areas of industry, transportation, communication, security and defense, as well as daily life. Its importance has been growing with the advancement of the technology and the expansion of the scope of its application, a growth this book fully describes.

Book Fiber Optics and Optoelectronic Devices

Download or read book Fiber Optics and Optoelectronic Devices written by S. Mohan, V. Arjunan, Sujin P. Jose and published by MJP Publisher. This book was released on 2014-12-27 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber optics or optical fibers are long, thin strands of very pure glass about the diameter of a human hair. They are very popular for many applications due to their special features such as unlimited bandwidth to transmit information, low loss, immunity to interferences and galvanic isolation. Optical communication is the current era in which optical fibers play an important role. Fiber optic cables find many uses in a wide variety of industries and applications. Fiber is laid and used for transmitting and receiving purposes in telecommunications. They are used for data transmission, in data storage, and to connect users and servers in a variety of network. They help to increase the speed and accuracy of data transmission. Broadcast/cable companies are using fiber optic cables for wiring CATV, HDTV, internet, video on-demand and other applications. Fiber optic cables are used for lighting and imaging and as sensors to measure and monitor a vast array of parameters. Fiber optic cables are also used in research and development and testing across the industries and research laboratories. The field of optical fiber sensors has advanced substantially in the last decade. A fiber-optic sensor system consists of a fiber-optic cable connected to a remote sensor or amplifier. The sensor emits, receives, and converts the light energy into an electrical signal. Fiber optic sensors are widely used in industry and in medical applications. They are used as light guides and imaging tools in medical field. This book deals with the fundamentals of light, fibers and fiber optics along with various types of fibers, lasers including the recent advances in lasers. Since optical communications is the current interest of this century, optical sources, detectors, optoelectronic modulators, optical amplifiers, fiber optic network components and optoelectronic integrated circuits are discussed extensively in this book. Further, a chapter is fully devoted in this book on applications of optical fibers which include many fiber optic sensors, and new fibers in medical field. The book will be useful to university and college students, teachers, engineers, doctors and common man as the fiber optic applications are expanding very rapidly due to several multibenefits.
