Book excerpt: We consider call option prices in diffusion models close to expiry, in an asymptotic regime ("moderately out of the money") that interpolates between the well-studied cases of at-the-money options and out-of-the-money fixed-strike options. First and higher order small-time moderate deviation estimates of call prices and implied volatility are obtained. The expansions involve only simple expressions of the model parameters, and we show in detail how to calculate them for generic local and stochastic volatility models. Some numerical examples for the Heston model illustrate the accuracy of our results.

It examines how authorities, starting with the imposition of draconian controls over all international financial flows, moved toward eliminating virtually all state interference regulating foreign exchange transactions, including official intervention in the foreign exchange market. It describes how policy and institutional frameworks evolved, explains their domestic and international contexts, and assesses the impacts and consequences of policy actions. Following successful exchange rate-based stabilization in the early 1950s, Japan entered the world trading system with an overvalued currency, which helped perpetuate exchange and capital controls. As the culture of administrative control became ingrained, Japan took a decidedly gradualist approach to establishing current and capital account convertibility. The protracted capital account liberalization, coupled with slow domestic financial liberalization, created large swings in the yen's exchange rate when it was floated in the 1970s. Politicization by major trading partners of Japan's large bilateral trade surplus pressured authorities to subordinate domestic stability to external objectives. The ultimate outcome was costly: from the late 1980s, Japan successively experienced asset price inflation, a banking crisis, and economic stagnation. The book concludes by arguing that the shrinking trade surplus against the background of profound structural changes, the rise of China that has diminished the political intensity of any remaining bilateral economic issues, and the world's sympathy over two decades of deflation have given Japan, at least for now, the freedom to use macroeconomic policies for domestic purposes.

Let log stock price under risk-neutral measure follow an AJD model, we show that an explicit form of moment generating function for log stock price can be obtained by solving a set of ordinary differential equations. A large-time large deviation principle for log stock price is derived by applying the G\"{a}rtner-Ellis theorem. We characterize the asymptotic behaviors of the implied volatility in the large-maturity and large-strike regime using rate function in the large deviation principle. The asymptotics of the Black-Scholes implied volatility for fixed-maturity, large-strike and fixed-maturity, small-strike regimes are also studied. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical work. In the second part of this thesis, we study the European option pricing problem when the underlying stock follows an AJD model whose jump interarrival time has a Cox-Ingersoll-Ross type intensity dynamics. An analytic formula of a European option pricing is derived using the Fourier inversion transform technique. We develop a Monte Carlo algorithm to simulate the dynamics of an AJD model. We observe AJD At-The-Money (ATM) European option prices using the Monte Carlo simulation converge to the Fourier analytic ones as the number of simulation paths increases.

Yet theory alone cannot resolve the important issues at stake. Only after the robustness of policy regimes has been carefully examined with empirical evidence will policymakers and economists be able to reach more of a consensus. This pathbreaking volume takes major steps forward in meeting the need for a combination of theoretical and empirical evaluations of alternative policy regimes. Bringing together individuals and groups doing pioneering research on macroeconomic interaction, it explores what approach to monetary policy would lead to superior performance by individual national economies and the world economy as a whole. Many parts of the book use the analytical techniques of stochastic simulation, an evaluation procedure increasingly employed at the frontier of empirical economic analysis. The book provides a summary of the hey issues involved in evaluating policy regimes and clarifies the relationships among those issues. The authors examine the stabilization properties of alternative monetary-policy regimes and analyze how well various regime types perform in the face of unexpected shocks to national economies. Among their conclusions, they find that some simplified regimes for monetary policy are markedly less promising than others for achieving the stabilization objectives commonly sought by policymakers. This paper explores simplification options for the taxation of MNEs, an area where administrative and compliance costs of the current rules are large. Simplified approaches seek to reduce these costs by relying on an approximation of the true tax base, potentially distorting resource allocation. We examine the efficiency cost of transfer pricing simplification theoretically and empirically. Using a sample of 300,000 firms located in 22 countries, we estimate that common transfer pricing practices reduce efficiency between 0.25 and 2.2 percent of total factor productivity across sectors. Focusing on the manufacturing sector, we then observe that simplification more than doubles sectoral inefficiency on average. However, large differences exist, with moderate efficiency costs in several sectors.

Book excerpt: In this paper we use a regime-switching process to model the unobserved volatility of the underlying asset and derive a closed-form, risk-neutral option pricing formula. Specifically, our model implies the state price density (SPD) is a time-varying mixture of normals which can provide for time-varying excess kurtosis and skewness as agents learn about the state of volatility from realized returns. Furthermore, we show that our model generates the kinds of volatility quot;smilesquot; commonly found in option markets. We apply our two and three regime models to weekly Samp;P 500 option data and find our model fits the data better than other popular pricing models. Additionally, we find evidence that stock returns can be well-described by a markov switching framework with a very persistent low volatility regime followed by a less persistent moderate volatility regime and a highly non-persistent crash regime. Our estimation results don't suffer the so called quot;Peso Problemquot; as they come from option prices instead of the observed stock returns.
