This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the past few years, there has been extensive research done on structural design in terms of optimization methods or problem formulation. But, much of this attention has been on the linear elastic structural behavior, under static loading condition. Such a focus has left researchers scratching their heads as it has led to vulnerable structural configurations. What researchers have left out of the equation is the element of seismic loading. It is essential for researchers to take this into account in order to develop earthquake resistant real-world structures. Topics discussed within this book include, but are not limited to, simulation issues for the accurate prediction of the seismic response of structures, design optimization procedures, soft computing applications, and other important advancements in seismic analysis and design where optimization algorithms can be implemented. Readers will discover that this book provides relevant theoretical frameworks in order to enhance their learning on earthquake engineering as it deals with the latest research findings and their practical implementations, as well as new formulations and solutions.

Book Seismic Design Optimization of Steel Structures Using Genetic Algorithm

Download or read book Seismic Design Optimization of Steel Structures Using Genetic Algorithm written by Tiancheng Wang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genetic Algorithm (GA) was selected for application to design optimization of braced steel moment resisting frame (MRF) structures. A MATLAB program was developed that uses GA for diagonal braces optimization of two-dimensional three-story and nine-story frame structures. The soGA program was used to find an optimal solution from a large search space with different design variables in a reasonable length of time with a fully automated process. Established computational models can simulate the nonlinear behavior of 3- and 9-story steel MRFs under different earthquakes by using OpenSees software. Plastic hinges and Bilin material were used to simulate the plastic stage of Reduced Beam Section (RBS) during nonlinear time history analyses. The final design obtained by the soGA program was compared to the base structures without braces, in terms of maximum story drift ratio and maximum floor acceleration during nonlinear time history seismic analyses.

Book Multiobjective Optimum Design of Static and Seismic resistant Structures with Genetic Algorithm Fuzzy Logic and Game Theory

Download or read book Multiobjective Optimum Design of Static and Seismic resistant Structures with Genetic Algorithm Fuzzy Logic and Game Theory written by Dan Li and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The goal of this research is to develop a constrained multiobjective optimization method in the form of a robust, practical, problem-independent algorithm, and to investigate the effect of multiobjective optimization on structural design. This research studies the properties and characteristics of multiobjective optimization and solutions. Design objectives, constraints and design variables as well as their effect on structural design and behaviors are investigated. Dynamic input energy for a multidegree-of-freedom structure is formulated. A multiobjective optimization algorithm based on game theory is developed. Fuzzy set theory is introduced to construct a fuzzy constrained environment. A Pareto genetic algorithm is developed based on a simple genetic algorithm. Two new genetic algorithm operators -- multiobjective fitness function and niche method -- are proposed. A new genetic algorithm process -- Pareto set filter -- is added to genetic algorithms. Finally, a multiobjective optimization algorithm, which is robust and performs uniformly well on a broad range of problems, is developed with genetic algorithm, fuzzy logic and game theory. Six frame structures and five truss structures have been optimally designed with static load, seismic excitation, and active control. Materials for the structures are steel, reinforced concrete, and a combination of both. Optimization goals cover weight, structural cost, displacement, strain energy, input energy, potential energy, and performance index. Constraints include stress, displacement, frequency, and ratio of story stiffness. The numerical results show that the newly developed algorithms can locate a global solution and Pareto optimum set which are usually difficult to find"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Harmony Search Algorithms for Structural Design Optimization

Download or read book Harmony Search Algorithms for Structural Design Optimization written by Zong Woo Geem and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various structures, such as buildings, bridges, and paved roads play an important role in our lives. However, these construction projects require large expenditures. Designing infrastructure cost-efficiently while satisfying all necessary design constraints is one of the most important and difficult tasks for a structural engineer. Traditionally, mathematical gradient-based optimization techniques have been applied to these designs. However, these gradient-based methods are not suitable for discrete design variables such as factory-made cross sectional area of structural members. Recently, researchers have turned their interest to phenomenon-mimicking optimization techniques because these techniques have proved able to efficiently handle discrete design variables. One of these techniques is harmony search, an algorithm developed from musical improvisation that has been applied to various structural design problems and has demonstrated cost-savings. This book gathers all the latest developments relating to the application of the harmony search algorithm in the structural design field in order for readers to efficiently understand the full spectrum of the algorithm’s potential and to easily apply the algorithm to their own structural problems. This book contains six chapters with the following subjects: standard harmony search algorithm and its applications by Lee; standard harmony search algorithm for steel frame design by Degertekin; adaptive harmony search algorithm and its applications by Saka and Hasançebi; harmony particle swarm algorithm and its applications by Li and Liu; hybrid algorithm of harmony search, particle swarm & ant colony for structural design by Kaveh and Talatahari; and parameter calibration of viscoelastic and damage functions by Mun and Geem.

Book Meta heuristic Algorithms for Optimal Design of Real Size Structures

Download or read book Meta heuristic Algorithms for Optimal Design of Real Size Structures written by Ali Kaveh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this book discuss large-scale problems like the optimal design of domes, antennas, transmission line towers, barrel vaults and steel frames with different types of limitations such as strength, buckling, displacement and natural frequencies. The authors use a set of definite algorithms for the optimization of all types of structures. They also add a new enhanced version of VPS and information about configuration processes to all chapters. Domes are of special interest to engineers as they enclose a maximum amount of space with a minimum surface and have proven to be very economical in terms of consumption of constructional materials. Antennas and transmission line towers are the one of the most popular structure since these steel lattice towers are inexpensive, strong, light and wind resistant. Architects and engineers choose barrel vaults as viable and often highly suitable forms for covering not only low-cost industrial buildings, warehouses, large-span hangars, indoor sports stadiums, but also large cultural and leisure centers. Steel buildings are preferred in residential as well as commercial buildings due to their high strength and ductility particularly in regions which are prone to earthquakes.

Book Application of Genetic Algorithms for Optimal Aseismic Design of Passively Damped Adjacent Buildings

Download or read book Application of Genetic Algorithms for Optimal Aseismic Design of Passively Damped Adjacent Buildings written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural pounding is an important problem that may occur when closely spaced buildings experience earthquake excitation. Many energy dissipation devices are presently being used to reduce both structure vibration and probability of pounding. The goal of this research is to develop a methodology for optimal aseismic design of two adjacent structures via the use of passive energy dissipation devices, in order to minimize the pounding effect. In this research, metallic, viscous and viscoelastic dampers have been considered as the devices of choice to mitigate the risk of structural pounding. For the best overall system response, a design procedure utilizing a performance function is used to attain the optimal distribution of the metallic, viscous and viscoelastic dampers in the adjacent structures. To determine the optimal size and location of these dampers in one or both of the structures, Genetic Algorithms are used. The required number of dampers of known capacity and their optimal placement locations in adjacent buildings are calculated to achieve the maximum reduction in a desired response. Finally, a new methodology is developed employing Genetic Algorithms (GA) for the optimal aseismic design of two adjacent structures using passive energy dissipation devices with variable ground motion time history.
