Book Luminescent Lanthanide containing Materials

Download or read book Luminescent Lanthanide containing Materials written by Julie Marie Wilkerson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luminescent lanthanide complexes have been widely studied for various biotechnology and materials science uses, however, the application of these luminescent systems in metallopolymers has been relatively limited, especially when compared to those incorporating transition metal complexes. The unique and interesting photophysical properties of lanthanide complexes (i.e., high color purity and long radiative lifetimes) make these systems ideal for the development of luminescent metallopolymers, which are a unique class of hybrid materials that synthetically incorporate metal centers into organic polymers, thereby taking advantage of the beneficial properties of both traditional inorganic (i.e., catalysis, optics, electronics) and organic (i.e., easy to process, flexible, low weight) materials. A new class of lanthanide complexes exhibiting metal-based visible and near-IR photoluminescence has been designed, synthesized and fully characterized by melting point, ESI-MS, elemental analysis and single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (when possible). The photophysical properties of these luminescent monomer complexes were studied in solution and the solid state, with the emission spectra displaying the characteristic line-like emission peaks of the trivalent lanthanide ions. This indicates efficient energy transfer from ligand centered excited states to the emissive excited states of the lanthanides. The monomer complexes have been electropolymerized, resulting in conducting metallopolymers that display metal-based photoluminescence. Because these hybrid materials retain the desirable properties of both inorganic semiconductors and organic polymers, such as near metallic electrical conductivity, ease of processing, flexibility and light weight, they are promising for applications in solid-state lighting.

Biomedical labeling with luminescent lanthanide complexes can be used to image and measure structural characteristics of proteins and other biological molecules with high spectral purity. This works aims to study structural variations of a PIP ligand that optimize the efficacy of a europium complex for its use as a fluorescent biomedical label. Each PIP ligand was synthesized from 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-dione and an aldehyde substituent to be further reacted with Eu(TTA)3.2H2O to form the chelated europium complex. The structure of each PIP ligand was characterized using FT-IR, 1 H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy.

Book Energy Transfer Processes in Polynuclear Lanthanide Complexes

Download or read book Energy Transfer Processes in Polynuclear Lanthanide Complexes written by Shun Omagari and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the luminescence mechanism of polynuclear lanthanide complexes, focusing on energy transfer processes using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. Lanthanide complexes show intense luminescence from the lanthanide ion through sensitization by the organic ligands. The high chromaticity of the emission and the long lifetimes of the complexes are particularly attractive for applications such as organic light-emitting diodes and bioprobes. Polynuclear lanthanide complexes (coordination polymers and clusters) have attracted considerable interest for functionalization by energy transfer between lanthanide ions. At the same time, such extra processes complicate the luminescence mechanism, hindering the rational design of functional polynuclear lanthanide complexes. Firstly, the book explains the principle of the theoretical methods, and then describes the concentration-quenching mechanism in coordination polymers. It also examines the effect of intrinsic spin–orbit coupling arising from lanthanide ions on the ligand-to-lanthanide energy transfer efficiency and the mechanism of back energy transfer (the opposite of sensitizing energy transfer) in lanthanide clusters. This sets the stage for the final topic: the suppression of back energy transfer by energy transfer between lanthanide ions in lanthanide clusters, which is of critical importance, showing that the lanthanide clusters can be considered a new generation of functional and efficient luminescent material and could also provide a breakthrough in lanthanide photophysics.

Book Highly Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes with Specific Coordination Structures

Download or read book Highly Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes with Specific Coordination Structures written by Kohei Miyata and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with strongly luminescent lanthanide complexes having novel coordination structures. Luminescent lanthanide complexes are promising candidates as active materials for EL devices, lasers, and bio-sensing applications. The organic ligands in lanthanide complexes control geometrical and vibrational frequency structures that are closely related to the luminescent properties. In most of the previous work, however, lanthanide complexes have high-vibrational frequency C–H units close to the metal center for radiationless transition. In this thesis, the luminescent properties of lanthanide complexes with low-vibrational frequency C–F and P=O units are elucidated in terms of geometrical, vibrational, and chemical structures. The author also describes lanthanide coordination polymers with both high thermal stability (decomposition point > 300°C) and strong-luminescent properties (emission quantum yield > 80%). The author believes that novel studies on the characteristic structures and photophysical properties of lanthanide complexes may open up a frontier field in photophysical, coordination and material chemistry.

Book Functional Molecular Materials

Download or read book Functional Molecular Materials written by Matteo Atzori and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of molecular materials represents an exciting playground for the design, tailoring, and combination of chemical building blocks as carriers of physical properties and aims at the understanding and development of novel functional molecular devices. Within this extraordinarily widespread framework, the realization of materials with the desired functionalities can only be achieved through a rational design strategy based on a solid understanding of the chemical and physical features of each constituting building block. This book provides a general overview of molecular materials, discussing their key features in a simple and organic way by focusing more on basic concepts rather than on specialized descriptions, in order to supply the non-expert reader with the immediate fundamental tools and hints to understand and develop research in this field. With this view, it is a step-by-step guide toward the preparation of functional molecular materials, where the knowledge and understanding so far attained by the scientific community through the investigation of significant archetypical examples is deconstructed down to the fundamental basis and then presented in reverse, from the base to the top.

Book Assembled Lanthanide Complexes with Advanced Photophysical Properties

Download or read book Assembled Lanthanide Complexes with Advanced Photophysical Properties written by Yuichi Hirai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-07 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis provides essential information on the systematic design of assembled lanthanide complexes for functional luminescent materials. It discusses the relationships between assembled structures and photo, thermal, and mechanical properties on the basis of crystallography, spectroscopy, and thermodynamics. The described guidelines for assembled structures will be extremely valuable, both for industrial applications and for readers’ fundamental understanding of solid-state photophysics and materials chemistry. Luminescent lanthanide complexes are promising candidates for lighting devices, lasers, and bio-probes owing to their line-like and long-lived emission arising from characteristic 4f–4f transitions. Low-vibrational and asymmetrical coordination structures around lanthanide ions have been introduced to achieve strong luminescence, using specific organic ligands. Recently, assembled lanthanide complexes including coordination polymers and metal organic frameworks have increasingly attracted attention as a new class of luminescent materials offering thermal stability and color tunability. However, improving the luminescence efficiencies of these compounds remains a challenge, and specific molecular designs to control assembled structures and yield additional physical properties have not been established. The author provides a group of bent-angled bridging ligands to boost photoluminescence efficiency, and successfully introduces for the first time glass formability and strong triboluminescence properties.
