Book excerpt: The first-ever collection of writings by Christian D. Larson, author of the famous “Optimist Creed” and one of the twentieth-century’s pioneers of motivational thought. Contemporary research has shown that optimistic people experience longer and healthier lives, better relationships, and higher incomes. Generations before such findings, however, inspirational writer Christian D. Larson showed an amazing grasp of the life-changing power of gratitude and optimism. Today, Larson is known worldwide for his powerful meditation, “The Optimist Creed,” and other classics of spiritual living. But no single volume has collected his greatest writings. Here, at last, is a long-overdue anthology that makes Larson’s foundational writings available to the countless readers who already know his name and work. Like no one else of his day, Larson understood the metaphysical and psychological dimensions of grateful living – or, as he famously put it, “an attitude of gratitude.” Affirmative thought, Larson reasoned, sets in motion unseen forces, both spiritual and psychical, and aids in manifesting our desires. The Optimist Creed features complete editions of Larson’s most deeply affecting works, each redesigned and reset. It contains: The Pathway of Roses; Your Forces and How to Use Them (the work that features his original “Optimist Creed”); Mastery of Self; The Ideal Made Real; and Just Be Glad.

Book excerpt: Award-winning author Susin Nielsen has written a laugh-out-loud and heartrending novel for fans of Robyn Schneider’s Extraordinary Means and Cammie McGovern’s Say What You Will. Beware: Life ahead. Sixteen-year-old Petula de Wilde is anything but wild. A former crafting fiend with a happy life, Petula shut herself off from the world after a family tragedy. She sees danger in all the ordinary things, like crossing the street, a bug bite, or a germy handshake. She knows: life is out to get you. The worst part of her week is her comically lame mandatory art therapy class with a small group of fellow misfits. Then a new boy, Jacob, appears at school and in her therapy group. He seems so normal and confident, though he has a prosthetic arm; and soon he teams up with Petula on a hilarious project, gradually inspiring her to let go of some of her fears. But as the two grow closer, a hidden truth behind why he’s in the group threatens to derail them, unless Petula takes a huge risk. . . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book to inspire and strengthen your optimism. Helen Clark, former New Zealand Prime Minister and Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme says, "Good things happen when good people get together in common cause. More than 200 people have shared their wisdom and insights in this book 'The Case for Optimism: The Optimists' Voices.' Their views are fresh and sparkle off the pages."In "The Case for Optimism: The Optimists' Voices", 200 leaders share new and inspiring quotes, comments and affirmations to bring optimism to life and help guide you to greater optimism. At its simplest, optimism is a general expectation that good things will happen. According to recent Harvard health research, optimism may help you live longer. Optimism may also help you function better as a leader. Most of us are sick of turning on the news or opening a newspaper and being assailed with stories of disaster, mayhem and 24/7 criticism of our leaders. Victor Perton has written the "The Case for Optimism: The Optimists' Voices" to give voice to our yearning for a positive approach to leadership and life. Some quotes from the book:Steve Wozniak aka "The Woz", Co-founder, Apple Computer"H = S - F. Happiness = Smiles - Frowns. Find ways to smile and enjoy life, but don't frown. Don't argue. Don't let small things get to you. Just figure out the best path to move forward constructively. When you see pessimists, be glad that you are better with your optimism. Spread this thinking about optimism to young people. After about age 23 your personality is settled and you can't change it just with logical reasoning."Andrew Liveris, Chairman and CEO, The Dow Chemical Company: "In many cases, globalization and capitalism has been a force for good. At the same time, a substantial part of humanity has been left behind by growth that has been uneven and inequitable, creating a global environment marked by anger, violence, inequality, and divisiveness. Despite all of this, I remain as optimistic as ever. Today's world is abundant with opportunity to collaborate in new ways, creating positive change and solutions that protect the planet and provide hope to millions of people who feel that the world has forgotten them."Mick Farrell, CEO of Resmed: "Optimism is the triumph of hope over fear, of truth over deception, but it must be grounded in reality. Optimism without realism is just a dream; hope alone is not a strategy. Detailed planning of scenarios, laying out of plans towards an ambitious goal, and then inspiring a team to climb that hill together with passion and a mission greater than oneself - that combination is a sure path to success."Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever: "The future lies in the hands of the younger generation and that gives me huge cause for optimism. Wherever I go in the world, the young people I meet are engaged with the issues and challenges we face and focussed on finding solutions. Above all, they are driven by a deep sense of purpose. They may only represent 50% of today, but fortunately young people are 100% of tomorrow, and that is reason to celebrate".Chairman of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Denis Henry: "Optimism about the future and about the essential goodness in the majority of your community and workforce is the fuel for the certainty and commitment a leader needs."Professor Jane Burns: "People talk about tenacity and resilience and strength of character but it is optimism that drives behavior when on some days it would be easier to say "stop - I give up, it's too hard. Optimism is believing in the impossible and then taking the steps to make it possible."World Economic Forum's Bertrand Badr: "Leadership must appropriately combine a harsh sense of reality with a dose of contagious optimism. It is about looking forward past the obstacles. Yes we can!"

While the Turkish sun rises and her friends sleep soundly nearby, she remembers her life-and the lives of others, outcasts like her. This is a dark, violent world, but Leila is tough and open to beauty, light, and the essential bonds of friendship. Book On the Heights of Despair

Download or read book On the Heights of Despair written by E. M. Cioran and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-10 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Born of a terrible insomnia wchich E. M. Cioran called "a dizzying lucidity which would turn even paradise into hell," this book presents the youthful Cioran, a self-described "Nietzsche still complete with his Zarathustra, his poses, his mystical clown's tricks, a whole circus of the heights." On the Heights of Despair shows Cioran's first grappling with themes he would return to in his mature works: despair and decay, absurdity and alienation, futility and the irrationality of existence. It also presents Cioran as a connoisseur of apocalypse, a theoretician of despair, for whom writing and philosophy both share the "lyrical virtues" that alone lead to metaphysical revelations. An exorcism of despair, this book offers insights into the ironic anguish of Cioran's philosophic mind while providing fascinating information on his early development as a writer and thinker."

Book Inspirational Stories from the Pulpit

Download or read book Inspirational Stories from the Pulpit written by Rev. Wesley Moss and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of inspirational stories, food for thought, famous quotes, and humor is the result of more than ten years as senior pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee, and more than thirty-eight years of preaching and teaching. It is my hope that clergy and professional speakers as well as ordinary individuals will become better communicators in any setting using this easy to read and absorb material. It is also my hope that this collection will mentally stimulate the reader to do or feel something, especially to do something creative and spontaneous. Quoting from Mother Theresa: "The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or Leprosy, it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared-for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty . . . it is not only the poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God." (Mother Theresa, A Simple Path: Mother Theresa) In most of the inspirational stories, you will be able to experience God's love for humankind and His love for you, and at the same time demonstrate your love for God through your love for neighbor as suggested by Mother Teresa's quote. Even though I'm very acquainted with the section on humor, I find myself laughing out loud each time I revisit this section. If you are an introvert (quiet or your attention is mainly on yourself), this humor will make you an extrovert (active and expressive) and the life of any gathering, because almost everyone loves humor. Make this book a treasured addition to your library and one you will gladly recommend to others. It is my fervent prayer that through this effort I am leaving the wood pile a little higher than I found it. Jesus loves you and so do I! Reverend Wesley Louis Moss, at eighty-one years young, is Associate Minister of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia. Reverend Ken Jelks is senior pastor.

Book The Optimist s Telescope

Download or read book The Optimist s Telescope written by Bina Venkataraman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of 2019 by NPR “How might we mitigate losses caused by shortsightedness? Bina Venkataraman, a former climate adviser to the Obama administration, brings a storyteller’s eye to this question. . . . She is also deeply informed about the relevant science.” —The New York Times Book Review A trailblazing exploration of how we can plan better for the future: our own, our families’, and our society’s. Instant gratification is the norm today—in our lives, our culture, our economy, and our politics. Many of us have forgotten (if we ever learned) how to make smart decisions for the long run. Whether it comes to our finances, our health, our communities, or our planet, it’s easy to avoid thinking ahead. The consequences of this immediacy are stark: Deadly outbreaks spread because leaders failed to act on early warning signs. Companies that fail to invest stagnate and fall behind. Hurricanes and wildfires turn deadly for communities that could have taken more precaution. Today more than ever, all of us need to know how we can make better long-term decisions in our lives, businesses, and society. Bina Venkataraman sees the way forward. A journalist and former adviser in the Obama White House, she helped communities and businesses prepare for climate change, and she learned firsthand why people don’t think ahead—and what can be done to change that. In The Optimist’s Telescope, she draws from stories she has reported around the world and new research in biology, psychology, and economics to explain how we can make decisions that benefit us over time. With examples from ancient Pompeii to modern-day Fukushima, she dispels the myth that human nature is impossibly reckless and highlights the surprising practices each of us can adopt in our own lives—and the ones we must fight for as a society. The result is a book brimming with the ideas and insights all of us need in order to forge a better future.
