Book excerpt: Ce travail concerne l’optimisation de réseaux de capteurs et d’actionneurs piézo-électriques au moyen d’algorithmes génétiques en contrôle actif de vibrations de structures plaques. Le rôle des actionneurs étant d’amortir le plus rapidement possible les vibrations, on cherche à minimiser l’énergie de contrôle par rapport à la position des actionneurs. Les capteurs devant observer le mieux possible le mouvement de la structure, leurs positions sont choisies pour maximiser l’énergie de sortie. Pour quantifier la qualité du réseau de capteurs et d’actionneurs, nous utilisons deux nouveaux critères d’optimisation développés au laboratoire LEME qui permettent de ne pas privilégier un mode propre particulier. Ces critères sont utilisés pour optimiser la position de réseaux d’éléments piézo- électriques en tenant compte à la fois de leur position et de leur orientation en présence ou non de modes résiduels. A partir du critère associé aux capteurs, nous introduisons un second critère permettant de déterminer si chaque mode est correctement observé par le réseau de capteurs utilisé. Nous utilisons alors les deux critères associés aux capteurs pour optimiser simultanément le nombre et la position des capteurs piézo-électriques. La nature des problèmes d’optimisation posés (variables continues et/ou discrètes, optimaux globaux et locaux multiples, optimisation multi-objectifs, fonctions d’optimisations non continûment dérivables) nous a conduit à développer un algorithme génétique simple adapté à nos variables d’optimisation et n’utilisant que les fonctions élémentaires de sélection, croisement et mutation. L’optimisation des paramètres de la loi de commande est également effectuée au moyen d’un algorithme génétique. Un exemple d’application de contrôle actif optimal est proposé sur une carte électronique simplifiée.

Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

Vector-borne plant and animal diseases, including several newly recognized pathogens, reduce agricultural productivity and disrupt ecosystems throughout the world. These diseases profoundly restrict socioeconomic status and development in countries with the highest rates of infection, many of which are located in the tropics and subtropics. Although this workshop summary provides an account of the individual presentations, it also reflects an important aspect of the Forum philosophy. The workshop functions as a dialogue among representatives from different sectors and allows them to present their beliefs about which areas may merit further attention. These proceedings summarize only the statements of participants in the workshop and are not intended to be an exhaustive exploration of the subject matter or a representation of consensus evaluation. Book excerpt: The 1999 international conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI ’99) was the sixteenth in the series of biennial meetings and followed the successful meeting in Poultney, Vermont, in 1997. This year, for the rst time, the conference was held in central Europe, in the historical Hungarian town of Visegr ad, one of the most beautiful spots not only on the Danube Bend but in all Hungary. The place has many historical connections, both national and international. The castle was once a royal palace of King Matthias. In the middle ages, the Hungarian, Czech, and Polish kings met here. Recently, after the summit meeting of reestablished democracies in the area, it became a symbol for the cooperation between central European countries as they approached the European Union. It was thus also symbolic to bring IPMI, in the year of the 30th anniversary of its foundation, to this place, and organize the meeting with the close cooperation of local and traditional western organizers. It also provided a good opportunity to summarize brie?y a history of IPMI for those who were new to the IPMI conference. This year we received 82 full paper submissions from all over the world. Of these, 24 were accepted as oral presentations. These were divided into 6 sessions. In spite of our e orts, it was found to be impossible to make these sessions fully balanced and homogeneous.

This volume is organized into eight chapters and begins by sketching out the history of the discovery of rodent as well as aspects of parasitology, immunology, and chemotherapy. These concepts are investigated two decades following Ignace Vincke's major discovery and Meir Yoeli's successful establishment of the method of cyclical transmission of the parasite. The following chapters focus on the taxonomy and systematics of the subgenus Vinckeia, with reference to the concepts of species and subspecies of animals and the degree to which they apply to malaria parasites, in particular to those of rodents. The discussion then shifts to how the rodent malaria parasites provide a unique insight into the subcellular organization of Plasmodium species, the use of rodent malaria as an experimental model to study immunological responses, and infectious agents that interact with malaria parasites. The book concludes with a chapter on malaria chemotherapy, with emphasis on the value of rodent malaria in antimalarial drug screening and the use of antimalarial drugs as biological probes. This book will be of interest to protozoologists and physicians as well as those from other disciplines including biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology, cell biology, and genetics.
