Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis, (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 19 (thesis year 1974) a total of 10,045 theses titles from 20 Canadian and 209 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 19 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Subject A little explanation is in order for our choice of the title Linear Opti- 1 mization (and corresponding terminology) for what has traditionally been called Linear Programming.Theword programming in this context can be confusing and/or misleading to students. Linear programming problems are referred to as optimization problems but the general term linear p- gramming remains. This can cause people unfamiliar with the subject to think that it is about programming in the sense of writing computer code. It isn’t. This workbook is about the beautiful mathematics underlying the ideas of optimizing linear functions subject to linear constraints and the algorithms to solve such problems. In particular, much of what we d- cuss is the mathematics of Simplex Algorithm for solving such problems, developed by George Dantzig in the late 1940s. The word program in linear programming is a historical artifact. When Dantzig ?rstdevelopedthe Simplex Algorithm to solvewhat arenowcalled linear programming problems, his initial model was a class of resource - location problems to be solved for the U.S. Air Force. The decisions about theallocationswerecalled‘Programs’bytheAirForce, andhencetheterm.

Book Least Squares Methods for Linear Programming Problems

Download or read book Least Squares Methods for Linear Programming Problems written by Balaji Gopalakrishnan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear programming has evolved over the years, due tosustained research and testing, as an excellent mathematical tool for solving manytheoretical and practical problems.Yet, escalating problem sizes in practical problemspose serious challenges for the verybest linear programming codes, running on the fastestcomputing hardware. New linearprogramming solution techniques have to developed tomeet these challenges. Theresearch performed in this book intends to addressthis issue through a comprehensivestudy of least-squares methods for solving linearprogramming problems. We have developed two new linear programmingalgorithms based on least-squarestheory. A Combined Objectives Least-Squares (COLS)algorithm uses a Non-NegativeLeast-Squares (NNLS) algorithm framework for solvingboth the Phase I and Phase IIlinear programming problems. A Least-SquaresPrimal-Dual (LSPD) algorithm usesNNLS solutions by solving small NNLS problems tosolve relatively larger linear programmingproblems. These algorithms are impervious todegeneracy. Computationalresults for the algorithms shows a superiorperformance over the simplex algorithmon a wide range of linear programming problems

Book Linear Optimization Problems with Inexact Data

Download or read book Linear Optimization Problems with Inexact Data written by Miroslav Fiedler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear programming has attracted the interest of mathematicians since World War II when the first computers were constructed. Early attempts to apply linear programming methods practical problems failed, in part because of the inexactness of the data used to create the models. This book presents a comprehensive treatment of linear optimization with inexact data, summarizing existing results and presenting new ones within a unifying framework.

Book An Application of a Linear Programming Technique to Nonlinear Minimax Problems

Download or read book An Application of a Linear Programming Technique to Nonlinear Minimax Problems written by James R. Schiess and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A differential correction technique for solving nonlinear minimax problems is presented. The basis of the technique is a linear programing algorithm which solves the linear minimax problem. By linearizing the original nonlinear equations about a nominal solution, both nonlinear approximation and estimation problems using the minimax norm may be solved iteratively. Some consideration is also given to improving convergence and to the treatment of problems with more than one measured quantity. A sample problem is treated with this technique and with the least-squares differential correction method to illustrate the properties of the minimax solution. The results indicate that for the sample approximation problem, the minimax technique provides better estimates than the least-squares method if a sufficient amount of data is used. For the sample estimation problem, the minimax estimates are better if the mathematical model is incomplete.

Book Analysis of a Methodology for Linear Programming Optimality Analysis

Download or read book Analysis of a Methodology for Linear Programming Optimality Analysis written by Chanseok Jeong and published by . This book was released on 1997-03-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The methodology of Johnson, Baner, Moore, and Grant can be applied to large scale linear programming models. A methodology for optimality analysis of linear programs was developed to create metamodels using response surface methodology techniques such as experimental design and least squares regression. A metamodel consists of a simple equation which is able to predict the optimal objective function value of a linear program. What is needed is some large scale application of the techniques to verify how accurate they are. In the research, I plan to use the large scale LP model, STORM. I use the "Hot Start" idea for the efficiency of STORM program calculation. The developed metamodels of the large scale LP can provide some useful information about the relationships between the objective function value and the right-hand-side vector and coefficients of the objective function (unit cost vector) by varying the right- hand-side vector and unit cost vector.

Book Potential Function Methods for Approximately Solving Linear Programming Problems Theory and Practice

Download or read book Potential Function Methods for Approximately Solving Linear Programming Problems Theory and Practice written by Daniel Bienstock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-08-31 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Potential Function Methods For Approximately Solving Linear Programming Problems breaks new ground in linear programming theory. The book draws on the research developments in three broad areas: linear and integer programming, numerical analysis, and the computational architectures which enable speedy, high-level algorithm design. During the last ten years, a new body of research within the field of optimization research has emerged, which seeks to develop good approximation algorithms for classes of linear programming problems. This work both has roots in fundamental areas of mathematical programming and is also framed in the context of the modern theory of algorithms. The result of this work, in which Daniel Bienstock has been very much involved, has been a family of algorithms with solid theoretical foundations and with growing experimental success. This book will examine these algorithms, starting with some of the very earliest examples, and through the latest theoretical and computational developments.
