Book excerpt: In this informative and well-researched account, the new developments in intermodal transport are discussed, and special attention is given to evaluation models and policy measures in this field. Describing the three core models that have been either developed or enhanced to create an overall assessment framework for intermodal transport policies in Belgium--a multimodal freight model (NODUS), a discrete event-simulation model of the inland waterway network and its terminals (SIMBA), and a Location Analysis Model for Belgian Intermodal Terminals (LAMBIT)--this record analyzes the effectiveness and sustainability of policy measures in terms of modal shift, external costs, and capacity restrictions associated with the freight infrastructure network.

Book Intermodal Freight Transportation

Download or read book Intermodal Freight Transportation written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Accounting Office (GAO) examined the status and potential benefits of intermodal rail transportation, in which loaded containers or trailers are transferred intact from truck to rail and back to truck. Specifically, GAO (1) examined recent trends in intermodal rail transportation, (2) assessed the prospects for more intermodal cooperation between the rail and trucking industries, (3) identified problems that limit the effectiveness and benefits of intermodal transportation, and (4) considered whether any federal initiatives might be helpful in encouraging intermodal cooperation.

Book Modern Trends and Research in Intermodal Transportation

Download or read book Modern Trends and Research in Intermodal Transportation written by Aleksander Sładkowski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a specific technical solution, called intermodal transport, which became the basic technological solution that made it possible to provide global interregional transport. Every day, new technical, technological, and organizational solutions appear that significantly affect the further development of this industry. However, there are certain local differences between regions. In addition, an essential factor is the exchange of experience between scientists from different countries. Accordingly, the purpose of this monothematic book is to acquaint readers with the achievements of scientists dealing with this topic and living in different regions. Scientists and specialists from Poland, Germany, Great Britain, USA, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Lithuania participated in the writing of individual chapters of this book. This book is intended for professionals, teachers, students, and others who are interested in new approaches to solving transport problems.

Book Intermodal Variability and Optimal Mode Selection

Download or read book Intermodal Variability and Optimal Mode Selection written by Tianshu Huang (M. Eng.) and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation cost is one of the major costs in supply chain. Companies need to optimize every aspect of the transportation process to reduce the total logistics cost. A key aspect is optimal mode selection to minimize the cost of every lane in a company's transportation network. The traditional approach is to select the mode based on freight cost and average transit time. Besides these two factors, the transit variability associated with each mode choice also impacts the transportation cost in an indirect way. In particular, higher variability of transit time will lead to a higher safety stock level in order to keep up with service level, resulting in higher inventory holding cost. To study the impact of transit time variability, we first generated transit time distribution from data provided by a larger retailer. Then we constructed a total logistics cost equation based on transportation cost, inventory cost that incorporates both average transit time and transit time variability from the transit time distribution. Lastly, we conducted sensitivity analysis using the total logistics cost equation with respect to changes in service level, load value, and volume. Beside mode selection problem, our approach of including cost of variability in total cost calculation can be applied to general problems that deals with uncertainties.

Book U S Freight Rail Economics and Policy

Download or read book U S Freight Rail Economics and Policy written by Jeffrey T. Macher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passage of the Staggers Rail Act in 1980 led brought a renaissance to the freight rail industry. In the decade following, economists documented the effects of the Act on a variety of important economic metrics including prices, costs, and productivity. Over the preceding years, and with the return of the industry to more stable footing, attention to the industry by economists faded. The lack of attention, however, has not been due to a dearth of ongoing economic and policy issues that continue to confront the industry. In this volume, we begin to rectify this inattention. Rather than retread older analyses or provide yet another look at the consequences of Staggers, we assemble a collection of ten chapters in four sections that collectively provide fresh and up-to-date analyses of the economic issues and policy challenges the industry faces: the first section sets the context through foundational discussion of freight rail; the second section highlights the role of freight rail in an increasingly interrelated economy; the third section examines industry structure and scope in freight rail; and the fourth section assesses current regulatory challenges that confront freight rail. This book will be of great value to researchers, academics, policymakers, and students interested in the fields of freight rail economics and policy, transportation, business history, and regulatory economics.

Book Optimal Design of Intermodal Transportation Facilities

Download or read book Optimal Design of Intermodal Transportation Facilities written by Stephen S. Roop and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "container revolution" of the last forty years has altered the manner in which transportation modes interact. Containerized freight continues to increase with ever larger ships, double stack train service, and trucking companies dedicated to intermodal container movements. The goal of "seamless" interaction between modes is based on a desire to reduce container dwell times at facilities and thus improve productivity and profitability. Consequently, the design of intermodal container terminals, the selection of appropriate lift equipment, and manpower allocation is of paramount importance to facility productivity. Tools for facility design undergo continual improvement. The current research is dedicated to developing a general simulation model of ship-to-rail intermodal container movements with the goal of providing analytical support to operations and facility design personnel

Book The Rail Freight Challenge for Emerging Economies

Download or read book The Rail Freight Challenge for Emerging Economies written by Bernard Aritua and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report captures ways in which policy makers and senior officials in railway organizations from emerging economies can accelerate modal shift to rail. Such officials, as well as the general public, aspire for more freight to be moved by rail. The environmental and societal benefits of such a shift are compelling. And yet investment in railways is often not followed by a corresponding increase in freight moved by rail. This report highlights the fact that, in a world of changing global supply chains and logistics, the approach to regaining modal share needs to be different. The expectation that lower cost and efficient rail service will automatically lead to modal shift from road to rail has not been a reality in most emerging economies. Modern railways focus on understanding the logistics of targeted freight and positioning rail transport services as part of an overall logistics system aimed at meeting the needs of customers.
