Book District Heating and Cooling Networks

Download or read book District Heating and Cooling Networks written by Antonio Colmenar Santos and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional thermal power generating plants reject a large amount of energy every year. If this rejected heat were to be used through district heating networks, given prior energy valorisation, there would be a noticeable decrease in the amount of fossil fuels imported for heating. As a consequence, benefits would be experienced in the form of an increase in energy efficiency, an improvement in energy security, and a minimisation of emitted greenhouse gases. Given that heat demand is not expected to decrease significantly in the medium term, district heating networks show the greatest potential for the development of cogeneration. Due to their cost competitiveness, flexibility in terms of the ability to use renewable energy resources (such as geothermal or solar thermal) and fossil fuels (more specifically the residual heat from combustion), and the fact that, in some cases, losses to a country/region’s energy balance can be easily integrated into district heating networks (which would not be the case in a “fully electric” future), district heating (and cooling) networks and cogeneration could become a key element for a future with greater energy security, while being more sustainable, if appropriate measures were implemented. This book therefore seeks to propose an energy strategy for a number of cities/regions/countries by proposing appropriate measures supported by detailed case studies.

Book District Energy System Design

Download or read book District Energy System Design written by Christian Inard and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles presented in this Special Issue cover different aspects of the urban planning process, such as simulation, optimization or decision-making. The authors highlighted the importance of performing an integrated design of the district, considering different sectors, different energy vectors and different operation modes. In order to better integrate renewable and residual energy sources (R²ES), careful design of systems and storage solutions should be performed. Different storage solutions were tested, ranging from large-scale thermal energy storage to vehicle batteries or the thermal mass of buildings. Van der Heijde et al. (2019) proposed a two-layer design optimization algorithm to design a district heating network with solar thermal collectors, seasonal thermal energy storage and excess heat injection. Pajot et al. (2019) also performed an optimization of the sizing and control of energy systems in a district equipped with heat pumps, with thermal energy storage or thermal mass utilization. A hybrid distribution system, coupling the thermal and electrical networks, was proposed by Widl et al. (2019). Arnaudo et al. (2019) used the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concept to decrease the overloading of the electrical distribution network during heat pump operation. Finally, Kazmi et al. (2019) proposed an integrated decision-making planning approach for a better integration of R²ES in the distribution network. The complexity of urban planning leads to the development of new tools and methodologies. Until now, operation was poorly integrated in the design phase. New urban building energy modeling tools were proposed by the different authors. These tools are either based on co-simulations or integrated solutions to be able to capture the fine dynamics of a district. The difficulty of generating the input data for the models was also discussed. Regarding the methodology, most articles proposed a two-stage optimization procedure to optimize both the operational and design aspects. Mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) and genetic algorithms were often used to find optimal solutions.

Book Optimal Heat Transfer Design for District heating and Cooling Pipelines in Air filled Cavities

Download or read book Optimal Heat Transfer Design for District heating and Cooling Pipelines in Air filled Cavities written by and published by . This book was released on 1904 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: District-heating and/or cooling systems are gradually becoming popular all over the world for heating and/or cooling of large premises. Current conventional practice for the DHC underground distribution networks is to place the supply and the return pipelines side-by-side in air-filled trencRe's. However, t present investigation has shown that by optimising the location of the pipelines, the thermal insulation provided by the air around the pipes can be maximised. This is achieved by placing the hot pipeline above the cold one, the exact position depending upon the temperatures involved. For most purposes, it is recommended that the displacement ratio for the hot pipe is to be at -0.7 or -0.08 and that of the cold pipe at 0.05 or 0.67 for district heating or cooling respectively [i.e. the hot and cold pipes being placed in the upper and lower halves of the trench respectively]. Each chapter is presented in such a way that it can be read independently of the others as far as possible.
