It is perhaps the oldest technology for separating or purifying liquid mixtures and is the most frequently used separation method in batch processes. In the last 25 years, with continuous development of faster computers and sophisticated numerical methods, there have been many published works using detailed mathematical models with rigorous physical property calculations and advanced optimisation techniques to address several important issues, such as selection of column configurations, design, operation, off-cut recycling, use of batch distillation in reactive and extractive modes, etc.Batch Distillation: Design and Operation presents excellent, important contributions of many researchers from around the globe, including those of the author and his co-workers./a

Book Distillation Control

Download or read book Distillation Control written by Cecil L. Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to Design the Best Control Configuration for Any Distillation Column Today, distillation is by far the most common separation technique used in the chemical and petroleum industries. All distillation columns need to be carefully controlled in order to meet specified production and quality levels. Distillation Control enables readers to do this by approaching the subject from a process to develop, analyze, and troubleshoot all aspects of column controls. Readers are efficiency and effectiveness and minimizing coats. Distillation Control begins with a chapter dedicated to underlying principles, including separation processes, reflux and boilup ratios, and composition dynamics. Next, the author covers such critical topics as: Composition control Pressure control and condensers Reboilers and feed preheaters Application of feedforward Unit optimization Complex towers As readers progress through the text, they’ll discover that the best control configuration for a distillation column is largely determined using steady-state process characteristics. The stage-by-stage separation models that the author sets forth for column design, therefore, provide information that is essential in developing the optimal control configuration. In addition to its clear explanations, Distillation Control is filled with clear diagrams and illustrations that clarify complex concepts and guide readers through multi-step procedures. Engineers as well as other professionals working in process facilities that use distillation to separate materials will fin that this book enables them to implement the latest tested and proven distillation control methods to meet their particular processing needs.

Book Time Optimal Control of a High dimensional Nonlinear Binary Distillation Column Using the Luus Jaakola Optimization Procedure

Download or read book Time Optimal Control of a High dimensional Nonlinear Binary Distillation Column Using the Luus Jaakola Optimization Procedure written by Manoj Rajagopalan and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic model of a methanol-isopropanol binary distillation column is set up from first principles with the aim of performing a time optimal control study. With 21 stages, the state of each being described by 2 variables, the time optimal control problem is 42 dimensional in its state space, with two control variables: the reflux flowrate and the reboiler heat duty. The model poses many computational challenges in its complex formulation and the nature and number of constraints on the control and the state variables. It is desired to take the system from an initial steady state to a desired steady state in minimum possible time. The Luus-Jaakola (LJ) optimization procedure is used to solve this time optimal control problem using piecewise constant control and flexible time-stage lengths. The complex model is directly used without any simplifications or transformations. In light of the special computational challenges involved, the LJ optimization procedure is found to perform very well: the best result obtained takes the system to within 4.319 * 10-4 (1-norm) of the desired state in 52.494 minutes employing a 6-stage control policy. The large computation time requirements limit experimentation with this model and possible avenues for improvements are identified.

Book Distillation Control Optimization and Tuning

Download or read book Distillation Control Optimization and Tuning written by Lanny Robbins and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a focus on the fundamentals and strategies of distillation columns, this book covers the process variables for continuous distillation columns, as well as four basic control strategies and the typical cases in which they are used. The author defines the inlet and outlet streams and process variables for a distillation column and then explains the overall concept of the separation and purification that is performed. Performance and product quality are described in terms of specification requirements, and tools and techniques for the optimization of quality performance are provided. Figures and graphs are included within the reference to illustrate concepts.

Book Accurate Determination of Optimal Reflux Policies for the Maximum Distillate Problem in Batch Distillation

Download or read book Accurate Determination of Optimal Reflux Policies for the Maximum Distillate Problem in Batch Distillation written by Jeffery Scott Logsdon and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "An approach for the accurate solution of optimal control problems that arise in batch distillation is developed and demonstrated. Since the optimal control problem has a natural partitioning of control variables and state variables, we develop a nonlinear programming decomposition strategy to (1) exploit the block matrix form of the discretized differential equations that results from using collocation on finite elements, and (2) perform the optimization in the reduced space of the control variables. State variables for each finite element are determined by linearized differential equations and information is passed from element to element by chainruling the state information. In addition, the nonlinear programming strategy has a great deal of flexibility to determine control variable discontinuities and enforce a wide variety of state and control variable constraints. In this study, we also consider characteristics of the maximum batch distillate problem and show that our approach is especially useful for the optimization of detailed tray-by-tray models with tray and condenser holdups. Here we discuss two formulations: an inequality path constrained problem and the classical endpoint constrained problem. In both cases interesting and unusual optimal policies are determined and compared to current practice. Moreover, parallels are observed between optimal reflux policies for these two problems, and these are also related to findings from previous studies. To handle these problems, nonlinear programs of up to 8000 variables are solved reasonably quickly on a small workstation. Finally, it is observed that more complex batch distillation problems can be handled in a straightforward manner through this approach."
