Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural heterogeneity and global change are key environmental drivers of ecosystem structure and function in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. At the foundation of all food webs are the primary producers, which require macronutrients and photosynthetic substrate in order to fix inorganic carbon into organic sugars and fuel energy transfer into food webs. This dissertation is an examination of the ecophysiology, or the interaction of organismal physiology with the environment, of key benthic primary producers on coral reefs. Reef-building corals and algae are the most abundant primary producers on coral reefs, and I use coarse functional groupings categorized as reef-building corals, fleshy macroalgae, calcareous macroalgae, crustose coralline algae (CCA) and turf algae assemblages. I assessed the influence of, 1) a natural gradient in inorganic nutrient availability, and, 2) simulated global change on the ecophysiology of corals and algae by functional group. The Southern Line Islands are an archipelago of islands that span the equatorial upwelling region and demonstrate predictable heterogeneity in inorganic nutrient availability. The dominant species of corals and algae demonstrated higher pigment concentrations and photosynthetic efficiency across the archipelago as a function of increasing inorganic nutrient concentrations. This suggests that natural fluxes of inorganic nutrients have an important positive influence on primary producers. I then conducted laboratory experiments on Palmyra Atoll and in Moorea, French Polynesia to test the effects of ocean acidification (OA) and warming on different functional groups of algae. Across a suite of species, OA increased the growth of fleshy macroalgae and turf algae assemblages, but decreased growth and calcification of calcareous macroalgae and CCA. Ocean acidification had a stronger effect than warming on the biomass of turf algae assemblages. Positive effects of OA on turf algae metabolism were increased by warming. These findings suggest that fleshy and calcifying algae respond differently to global change stressors. Ocean acidification has the potential to increase growth and productivity of fleshy algae, while concurrently decreasing growth and calcification of calcifying algae. Anthropogenic activities are increasingly altering the natural environment, and the results of this dissertation improve our ability to predict the response of corals and algae to increasing exposure to nutrients, OA and warming in the near-future ocean.

Given that reefs support some of the highest biodiversity and provide a large range of ecosystem goods and services, improved understanding of the factors controlling their productivity and function at an ecosystem level should be a high priority. This thesis explores how reef level biogeochemistry, and the trophic ecology of some reef organisms, may be influenced by oceanographic processes over broad temporal and spatial scales. The high productivity of coral reefs in an oligotrophic environment was historically attributed to tight recycling of nutrients, with reef ecosystems appearing to be neither a net source nor sink of nutrients. However, as this thesis emphasizes, there is now evidence that reefs may be highly biogeochemically dynamic in both space and time, depending on the input of allochthonous (oceanic) nutrients and releasing autochthonous (internally produced) nutrients at appreciable rates. At Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, the rate of phytoplanktonderived particulate organic nitrogen (PON) uptake we observed (2 5 mmol PON m 2 d 1) confirms that allochthonous particulate organic matter (POM) may supply a large proportion of the N missing in previous reef nitrogen budgets. Further, the estimated release of autochthonous dissolved N, as high as 18 mmol NOx m 2 d 1, increased significantly when the supply of allochthonous POM was high. This suggests that recycling may indeed be a significant processes, albeit driven by the supply of allochthonous POM and its remineralisation by reef organisms. As well as dissolved N, the reef released POM at an estimated rate on the same order of magnitude as allochthonous POM uptake (e.g. ~6 8 mmol PON m 2 d 1). Marked increases in carbon (C) isotope and C:N ratios of POM across the reef, coupled with isotope modelling, confirmed the dynamic allochthonous autochthonous POM exchange and the influence of potentially carbon rich reef sources such as coral mucus, fish faeces and macroalgae. The organism level significance of reef level POM dynamics was demonstrated in several studies using stable isotopes. Uptake of labelled plankton by experimental Hawaiian reef communities supported the importance of cryptic suspension feeders in rapidly incorporating allochthonous POM, as well as a potentially large role for non indigenous species. Isotopic changes in fish tissues across Ningaloo highlighted the potential for community level shifts in resource utilisation and suggested that back reef habitats and juvenile fishes may be particularly dependent on autochthonous nutrient production. The simultaneous uptake of allochthonous and release of autochthonous nutrients has several broad ecological implications. Firstly, Ningaloo is particularly likely to depend on oceanic nutrient supply, which was highly variable at daily to seasonal, and possibly interannual, time scales in response to the dynamics of Western Australia s regional current system. Acceleration of the downwelling favourable Leeuwin Current (LC) in the autumn doubled POM supply to the reef, while sporadic upwelling associated with the Ningaloo Current more than tripled dissolved N supply in the summer...
