This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the Rays of Light I understand its least Parts, and those as well Successive in the same Lines, as Contemporary in several Lines. For it is manifest that Light consists of Parts, both Successive and Contemporary; because in the same place you may stop that which comes one moment, and let pass that which comes presently after; and in the same time you may stop it in any one place, and let it pass in any other. For that part of Light which is stopp'd cannot be the same with that which is let pass. The least Light or part of Light, which may be stopp'd alone without the rest of the Light, or propagated alone, or do or suffer any thing alone, which the rest of the Light doth not or suffers not, I call a Ray of Light. Refrangibility of the Rays of Light, is their Disposition to be refracted or turned out of their Way in passing out of one transparent Body or Medium into another. And a greater or less Refrangibility of Rays, is their Disposition to be turned more or less out of their Way in like Incidences on the same Medium. Mathematicians usually consider the Rays of Light to be Lines reaching from the luminous Body to the Body illuminated, and the refraction of those Rays to be the bending or breaking of those lines in their passing out of one Medium into another. And thus may Rays and Refractions be considered, if Light be propagated in an instant. But by an Argument taken from the Æquations of the times of the Eclipses of Jupiter's Satellites, it seems that Light is propagated in time, spending in its passage from the Sun to us about seven Minutes of time: And therefore I have chosen to define Rays and Refractions in such general terms as may agree to Light in both cases.

Download or read book A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field written by James C. Maxwell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 1996-12-03 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We owe Clerk Maxwell the precise formulation of the space-time laws of electromagnetic fields. Imagine his own feelings when the partial differential equations he formulated spread in the form of polarized waves with the speed of light! This change in the understanding of the structure of reality is the most profound and fruitful that has come to physics since Newton."--Albert Einstein
Download or read book Newton s Opticks written by Isaac Newton and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2024-08-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Isaac Newton’s most influential works, this classic treatise on the principles of colour and light presents his groundbreaking experiments and discoveries regarding the colour spectrum and the nature of light. Opticks is a landmark publication that laid the foundation for modern colour science. First published in 1704, Newton details his experiments with light, prisms, and the colour spectrum, which led to the establishment of colour theory. His pioneering ideas led to insights into reflection, refraction, and the behaviour of light waves, revolutionising the field of optics. Highly detailed and thoroughly illustrated, Newton’s Opticks is a cornerstone text on the history of science, the nature of light, and the origins of modern optics. This new edition from Read & Co. Books also features a biography of Isaac Newton. It is an essential textbook for those interested in his revolutionary work and the physics of light and colour.
Download or read book Light Science written by Thomas D. Rossing and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for students in the visual arts and for others with an interest in art, but with no prior knowledge of physics, this book presents the science behind what and how we see. The approach emphasises phenomena rather than mathematical theories and the joy of discovery rather than the drudgery of derivations. The text includes numerous problems, and suggestions for simple experiments, and also considers such questions as why the sky is blue, how mirrors and prisms affect the colour of light, how compact disks work, and what visual illusions can tell us about the nature of perception. It goes on to discuss such topics as the optics of the eye and camera, the different sources of light, photography and holography, colour in printing and painting, as well as computer imaging and processing.

Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book excerpt: "In The Meaning of Color in Ancient Mesopotamia, Shiyanthi Thavapalan offers the first in-depth study of the words and expressions for colors in the Akkadian language (c. 2500-500 BCE). By combining philological analysis with the technical investigation of materials, she debunks the misconception that people in Mesopotamia had a limited sense of color and convincingly positions the development of Akkadian color language as a corollary of the history of materials and techniques in the ancient Near East"--
