Book First Principles Investigation of Core Level Second Harmonic Generation as Interfacial Probe

Download or read book First Principles Investigation of Core Level Second Harmonic Generation as Interfacial Probe written by Sasawat Jamnuch and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfacial probe at elemental selectivity is highly sought after experimental tool. Chemical phenomena happen at the interface and our understanding these processes is often challenging. Second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy technique can selectively probe the interface due to symmetry breaking. Coupling this technique with core electron XUV/X-ray spectroscopy allows elemental selectivity. In this regard, the development of novel core level second harmonic generation spectroscopy demonstrates a powerful tool at atomic resolution. Theoretical framework for simulation of XUV/X-ray SHG is developed to study different interfaces and interpret the experimental result. In this research, we explored Li ion displacement in ferroelectric perovskite LiOsO3 is studied via XUV-SHG, boron electronics structure at inorganic/organic junction and Li mobility in solid-state electrolyte lithium lanthanum titanate. In all cases, the bulk responses were indistinguishable between different interfaces while the surface sensitive SHG technique demonstrate different responses. Our approach shows a promising result toward elemental selective interfacial probe.

Book Recent Studies on Second harmonic Generation as a Surface Probe

Download or read book Recent Studies on Second harmonic Generation as a Surface Probe written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) is sensitive enough to respond to a submonolayer of surface atoms or molecules. It can therefore be used to probe surfaces or interfaces between two centrosymmetric media. The surface-specific nature of this optical method offers some advantages. We have demonstrated in recent experiments that resonant SHG can allow us to obtain spectroscopic data of submonolayers of adsorbed molecules on a surface. The signal was so strong that less than one tenth of a monolayer of dye molecules could be easily detected. The method can be applied to molecules adsorbed at an interface between two dense media such as a liquid/solid interface. Then, using SHG, adsorption isotherms of adsorbates on substrates can be measured. One is often interested in how large the bulk contribution to SHG is in comparison with the surface contribution. Second-order nonlinear optical processes are forbidden in a medium with inversion symmetry only in the electric-dipole approximation. Could SGH from electric-quadrupole and magnetic-dipole contributions in the bulk be so strong as to mask out the electric-dipole contribution from the surface. We have found that the SH signal from a centrosymmetric substrate can be changed appreciably by the adsorption of a monolayer. This clearly indicates that it is the adsorbate layer rather than the bulk of the substrate which dominates the SHG process. We are, however, also interested in developing the SHG technique for studying bare surfaces, and would like to know the relative bulk and surface contribution to SHG in such cases. We have studied this problem experimentally by measuring the SHG from well-defined faces of a crystalline material.

Book The Application of the Symmetry Properties of Optical Second Harmonic Generation to Studies of Interfaces and Gases

Download or read book The Application of the Symmetry Properties of Optical Second Harmonic Generation to Studies of Interfaces and Gases written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical second harmonic generation has proven to be a powerful tool for studying interfaces. The symmetry properties of the process allow for surface sensitivity not available with other optical methods. In this thesis, we take advantage of these symmetry properties SHG to study a variety of interesting systems not previously studied with this technique. We show that optical second harmonic generation is an effective surface probe with a submonolayer sensitivity for media without inversion symmetry. We demonstrate the technique at a gallium arsenide surface, exploiting the different symmetry properties of the bulk and surface of the crystal to isolate the surface contribution. We also demonstrate that optical second harmonic generation can be used to determine the anisotropic orientational distribution of a surface monolayer of molecules. We apply the technique to study homogeneously aligned liquid crystal cells. To further explore the LC-polymer interface, we used SHG to study the surface memory effect. The surface memory effect is the rendering of an isotropic interface anisotropic by putting it in contact with an anisotropic bulk. Last, we describe some preliminary measurements of a time-resolved spectroscopic study of the phenomenon of second harmonic generation in a gas. The construction of a 500 microjoule pulsed, tunable laser source is described.

This book was released on 2023-02-17 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical second harmonic and sum-frequency generation has evolved into a useful spectroscopic tool for material characterization, especially as a viable and powerful technique for probing surfaces and interfaces. This book serves as an introduction on the technique. It provides a comprehensible description on the basics of the technique and gives detailed accounts with illustrating examples on the wide range of applications of the technique. It clearly points out the unique capabilities of the technique as a spectroscopic tool for studies of bulk and interface structures in different disciplines. This book is an updated version of an earlier book on the same subject, but it puts more emphasis on physical concepts and description. It underscores recent advances of sum-frequency spectroscopy at the technical front as well as over its wide range of applications, with the author's perspective in each area. Most chapters end with a section of summary and prospects that hopefully can help stimulate interest to further develop the technique and explore possibilities of applying the technique.

Book Maxwell Displacement Current And Optical Second harmonic Generation In Organic Materials Analysis And Application For Organic Electronics

Download or read book Maxwell Displacement Current And Optical Second harmonic Generation In Organic Materials Analysis And Application For Organic Electronics written by Mitsumasa Iwamoto and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The probing and modeling of carrier transport in materials is a fundamental research subject in electronics and materials science. According to the Maxwell electromagnetic field theory, there are two kinds of currents, i.e., conduction current and Maxwell displacement current (MDC). The conduction current flows when electronic charges, e.g., electrons and holes, are conveyed in solids, whereas MDC is the transient current that is generated due to the change of electric flux density. The source of conductive current is charged particles, i.e., electrons, holes, ions, etc., and the source of MDC is also the charged particles. It is therefore anticipated that we can probe and model carrier transport in materials, in terms of 'MDC'. In other words, we can find a novel way for modeling and analyzing materials on the basis of Dielectric Physics Approach, on focusing dielectric polarization phenomena. Maxwell Displacement Current and Optical Second-Harmonic Generation are basically dielectric phenomena. The aim of this book is to show the dielectric physics approach for the study of molecular materials and organic electronics devices related to carrier transport and dielectric polarization, on focusing Maxwell Displacement Current and Optical Second-Harmonic Generation in Organic Materials from viewpoints of Analysis and Application for Organic Electronics.
