This book was released on 2003-09-04 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical, hands-on guidebook for the efficient modeling of VCSELs Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a unique type of semiconductor laser whose optical output is vertically emitted from the surface as opposed to conventional edge-emitting semiconductor lasers. Complex in design and expensive to produce, VCSELs nevertheless represent an already widely used laser technology that promises to have even more significant applications in the future. Although the research has accelerated, there have been relatively few books written on this important topic. Analysis and Design of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers seeks to encapsulate this growing body of knowledge into a single, comprehensive reference that will be of equal value for both professionals and academics in the field. The author, a recognized expert in the field of VCSELs, attempts to clarify often conflicting assumptions in order to help readers achieve the simplest and most efficient VCSEL models for any given problem. Highlights of the text include: * A clear and comprehensive theoretical treatment of VCSELs * Detailed derivations for understanding the operational principles of VCSELs * Mathematical models for the investigation of electrical, optical, and thermal properties of VCSELs * Case studies on the mathematical modeling of VCSELs and the implementation of simulation programs

Book Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Download or read book Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers written by Julian Cheng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-07-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since first coming into existence in the early 90s, the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) has made several quantum leaps in performance. The performance of VCSELs now exceeds that of edge-emitting lasers in many respects, and offers a superior optical beam and much easier monolithic integrability. As the VCSEL technology improves further, and their number and variety multiply, their potential applications will likely expand at a rapid pace. Vertical-cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers: Technology and Applications addresses two main objectives. It provides the researcher and device engineer with a reference guide to understanding the physical principles as well as the practical design concepts of VCSELs. Furthermore, it provides the system designer or application engineer with a review of the properties of VCSELs, and an overview of some of the applications in which the VCSEL has already played an important role. This book features contributions from prominent researchers in the field.

Book Investigations of Optical Properties of Active Regions in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers Grown by MBE

Download or read book Investigations of Optical Properties of Active Regions in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers Grown by MBE written by K. Reginski and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) requires an understanding of the many different optical parameters of these structures, and the optimization of VCSELs requires deep understanding of the optical processes occurring in the active regions of such lasers. In a series of MBE processes, active regions of VCSELs as well as whole VCSELs were grown. The active regions of the VCSEL structures were designed for lambda = 1000 nanometers and 980 nanometer emission. They consisted of a pair of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) composed of Aluminum Arsenide (AlAs) and Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) quarter wavelength layers and cavities made of GaAs. The cavities contained one or several quantum wells (QWs) made of In(0.2)Ga(0.8)As. To optimize the optical characteristics of the active regions, several experimental methods were applied. The Bragg reflectors and the entire microcavities were investigated by optical reflectivity. For selective excitation of a QW in a cavity active layer, a Ti-sapphire tuneable laser was used. The fine tuning between the QW emission and the cavity Fabry-Perot resonance was investigated by photoluminescence at varying temperatures of the sample. For monitoring the temporal evolution of the luminescence from the active region of the laser, time-resolved spectroscopy was employed. The combination of many methods of optical investigation enabled the authors to conduct a comprehensive characterization of VCSELs and, consequently, an optimization of the whole laser structure. Book 3d Simulation of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Download or read book 3d Simulation of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers written by Peter Nyakas and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers are promising devices on the semiconductor laser market, and offer numerous advantages over edge-emitters in the low power regime. Physics-based comprehensive modeling allows one to shorten the development period of future products and to reduce the design costs. These devices are sometimes noncircular, either owing to anisotropic oxidation speed or to achieve special characteristics, such as high-power single-mode output. Problems arising with complex structures call for three-dimensional numerical solutions. This book reviews the simulation methods for vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and provides novel approaches to investigate their more challenging variants. Electrical, thermal and optical properties are demonstrated on illustrative examples. The analysis helps to get insight into these exciting lasers, and should be especially useful to professionals in telecommunication and modeling fields.

Book Phase locked Arrays of Vertical cavity Surface emitting Lasers

Download or read book Phase locked Arrays of Vertical cavity Surface emitting Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELS) are of increasing interest to the photonics community because of their surface-emitting structure, simple fabrication and packaging, wafer-level testability, and potential for low cost manufacture. Scaling VCSELs to higher power outputs requires increasing the device area, which leads to transverse mode control difficulties if devices become larger than about 5 microns. One approach to increasing the device size while maintaining a well controlled transverse mode profile is formation of coupled or phase-locked two-dimensional arrays of VCSELs that are individually single-transverse mode. Such arrays have unique optical properties, not all of which are desirable. This paper covers some of the basic principles of these devices and reviews recent work on device designs, fabrication and operation. A technique for improving the far-field properties of the arrays is demonstrated and performance limitations are discussed.

Book Polarisation Properties of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Download or read book Polarisation Properties of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers written by Abdulqader Qader and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New approaches namely circularly polarised optical injection and circularly polarised optical feedback have been used experimentally for the first time. Using circularly polarised externally optical injection, the output polarisation of electrically pumped VCSELs can be strongly influenced. The linear polarisation of VCSELs emission can become circularly polarised for bias currents below or near the threshold current of the stand-alone VCSELs. In addition, using a new circularly polarised optical feedback scheme, the VCSELs emission was made to exhibit a degree of circular polarisation. The degree of circular polarisation depends on the feedback power ratio and the VCSEL bias current.

Book Diffractive Optics for Polarization Control of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Download or read book Diffractive Optics for Polarization Control of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers written by Johannes Michael Ostermann and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2007-08-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) have replaced edge-emitting laser diodes in several applications during the last years, e.g., in short distance optical data communication. Additionally, their invention has enabled new products such as optical computer mice using semiconductor lasers. However, VCSELs have intrinsically an unstable and not well-defined polarization, which has prohibited their usage in a considerable number of application areas up to now. Therefore, this thesis deals with polarization control of VCSELs. The highly sought-after polarization stabilization of VCSELs is achieved by using monolithically integrated surface gratings. The polarization control induced by these surface gratings has proven to be very reliable in thousands of grating VCSELs, under temperature variation, feedback, strain, and high-frequency modulation. Combining a surface grating with a surface relief, VCSELs having simultaneously a stable polarization and a high single-mode output power have been realized for the first time. Thus, surface grating VCSELs combine a well-defined polarization with low production costs and an excellent overall laser performance. With these properties, surface gratings outperform all other methods for polarization control of VCSELs tested before. Consequently, surface gratings have proven to be the method of choice for polarization control of VCSELs in commercial applications.

Book Energy Efficient VCSELs for Optical Interconnects

Download or read book Energy Efficient VCSELs for Optical Interconnects written by Philip Moser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation provides the first systematic analysis of the dynamic energy efficiency of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for optical interconnects, a key technology to address the pressing ecological and economic issues of the exponentially growing energy consumption in data centers. Energy-efficient data communication is one of the most important fields in “Green Photonics” enabling higher bit rates at significantly reduced energy consumption per bit. In this thesis the static and dynamic properties of GaAs-based oxide-confined VCSELs emitting at 850 nm and 980 nm are analyzed and general rules for achieving energy-efficient data transmission using VCSELs at any wavelength are derived. These rules are verified in data transmission experiments leading to record energy-efficient data transmission across a wide range of multimode optical fiber distances and at high temperatures up to 85°C. Important trade-offs between energy efficiency, temperature stability, modulation bandwidth, low current-density operation and other VCSEL properties are revealed and discussed.

Book Extraordinary Power Enhancement from Nanoaperture Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers for Near field Applications

Download or read book Extraordinary Power Enhancement from Nanoaperture Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers for Near field Applications written by Sonny Vo and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near-field optical microscopy requires extremely high optical fields in proximity to the object being probed. The high optical field can be use to manipulate objects, make high definition inscriptions in the case of lithography, or to facilitate enzymatic reactions in biological systems. However, when light propagates through conventional circular or square shaped apertures, the power-throughput decays as the fourth power of the aperture size. A vast diversity of unconventionally-shaped apertures are presented. These C-, L-, and bowtie-shaped apertures exhibit extra-ordinary enhancement in both power transmission and near-field intensity that can be one million times greater than the conventional circular- or square-shaped apertures. They can also be iterated into a fractal-structure resulting in many interesting optical properties or can be further enhanced with plasmonic rings. Near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) images capable of sub-diffraction-limited resolution were confirmed by the optical near-field spot size. Furthermore, experiments using electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) with sub-nanometer resolution revealed the near-field spot-size and the plasmon energy ranges of the nanoapertures. These unconventional apertures and arrays of apertures were incorporated into vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs); this integrated near-field device demonstrated a power density of 50mW/[micrometers]2, five times larger than the power density required for high-density optical recording. Finally, a novel architecture that combines a VCSEL with an NSOM-like tip (VCSEL nanoscope) into an integrated device is presented. The VCSEL nanoscope can serve as a powerful device to manipulate and probe the nanoscale such as single molecule manipulation and detection, high throughput wafer defect detection and near-field coupling to waveguides for optical interconnects.
